I wanted to tell the story of this song
It's a song I've been sitting on for a while
Not because it wasn't ready the truth is it was ready a year ago
It was ready when my fingers touched the strings and this came out
It was inspired by how I was living then
It had been a couple months since I'd flown out to Jordan to be with my wife
And we were struggling a lot financially
I was teaching online and trying to pay the bills from day to day and it was rough
Truth is, the entire time since I'd been there had been rough
I had saved up just enough money to get me there, I had an online guitar teaching gig with a school and I thought I'd be able to make it work
For a couple of months it did until it didn't
And the toughest thing I knew I'd have to accept was that I'd have to fly back to the states and get better work
And until our visa went through my wife couldn't come with me
And it all just felt so unfair
But so bittersweet at the same time
Still we made the best of our time before I had to leave
One of the things that had connected us and helped us to meet was music
And at the time one of the songs I'd sing to her was marry me Archie
It was a song as a musician that upset me
Namely because I hadn't been the one to write it
It seemed so fitting, it was just the sort of thing we'd gone through to get to where we were
We had our doubts when we met about how we could make things work
We were separated by a thousand miles of earth and ocean
And just star-crossed enough to be struck with love despite it
Neither one of us had ever been lucky so we just assumed this was a continuation of that
But despite our initial cynicism over the year or so that we had talked our relationship had blossomed into something very real
And soon enough I was catching my flight to Jordan
And within the month we were married
And it was happily ever after
Except that now I had to go back and potentially for a long time
There was simply no way I could have supported us further with my teaching at that time
The ship had sunk
Bills were piling up, often paid late
And we were living off ramen and chicken broth and trying to make do until the end of the month
Truth be told even then we often had help from my family
After a couple months trying to figure it out, it was clear that I would have to to back that the bell had tolled for us
And misery was here to collect his due
At the time I had been reading up on mythology between lessons
I was always intrigued by the idea the Greeks had that every object existent in human nature was inhabited by a spirit of sorts
The stories of the Dawn and Dusk intrigued me the most and just how holy soemthing so simple as the sun rising and setting was for them
I thought it so interesting that I'd come east to meet a woman who so clearly embodied all the aspects of the night
And then I had the name for the song
It was the name the Greeks had for the spirits of the evening light
