07/26/2024 Bell Test (Simplex 4100U)
Another bell test in a school from this week. This is in a 3-story middle school. The system is a Simplex 4100U and the signals are Wheelock AS-24-MCW-FR horn/strobes and Wheelock RSS-24MCW-FR remote strobes. I check floors 3 & 2 and my colleague checks the 1st floor, which contains large areas such as the gym, auditorium, and cafeteria plus several classrooms. This was not a successful test, as we found several deficiencies: the remote strobes in rooms 238, 202, 205-209, and the exterior remote strobe were found to be inoperable. The exterior strobe and the strobe in room 238 are in need of replacement. As far as the other strobes go, further investigation found a power supply with one of the circuits disconnected and resistored out. When we reattached the wire, troubles showed up on the power supply and our electrical meter detected an open circuit. This was confirmed when we conducted a test of the disconnected circuit and the strobe in room 202 functioned but the remaining strobes did not. Further troubleshooting is needed to correct the issue. As was with the last video, the hallways are a mess due to summer classroom cleaning.

A bell test in a private school. Although not seen, the control panel is a Siemens Cerberus Pro FC922. My colleague checks floors 4 & 3 and I check floors 2 & 1. The horn/strobes are Siemens U-MH-MCSs and the remote strobes are Siemens U-MCSs. The hallways are filled with furniture because school is out for the summer and the custodial staff are waxing the floors in some of the areas.

  • @TheCarson116

    In addition to the problems you mentioned I'd say there's another: the fact that not every signal across the entire building is synchronized, since you can hear some ASes sounding earlier than others. Given the fact that this system is so large it has NAC extenders the only course of action I can recommend to ensure all of the NAs are synced together is to replace all the existing NAC extenders with Potter's PSN-series, which can not only output the Wheelock Sync pattern but can also follow each other, making it ideal for installations like this one (though according to what I just read Wheelock's own PS-8-LP also has Wheelock Sync & follow capability, so there's another option). I'll still never understand the reason for some Simplex systems having Wheelock alarms: sure I can understand for outdoor applications since Simplex hasn't always made their own outdoor devices, but why inside? Simplex has made indoor alarms since basically the start of their fire alarm career, so why wouldn't they use use their own instead of some third-party manufacturer's? 6:56 I take it that that's one of the rooms with non-functioning NAs, right? 8:57 Not every day you see a horn/strobe & remote strobe right across from each other like that! (in perfect sync no less!) 9:41 Funny how it seems like the meditating person in the "Determination" "frame" (which don't really fit together) is holding the RSS in their left hand with the way it's mounted! 9:53 Well that's quite a big, spacious, & open "main lobby" isn't it? 10:04 Ah yes, the classic "buzz, buzz, buzz" of an older Simplex annunciator: I kinda miss the days when panels & annunciators use to buzz like that: definitely more of a gentle sound than what you get with piezos. Is that a Secutron security keypad I see next to it? (which seems to be awful chill with the alarm going off despite its fire alarm counterpart/neighbor annunciating the condition) 10:22 Interesting how they went with the kind of wall material you sometimes find on the outsides of houses (for lack of a better way to describe it). Also yeah, that outdoor strobe is _definitely_ in need of replacement given how worn-out it is! 11:02 Is that an emergency stop button I see below that AS? (in place of where a pull station likely should be. There also appears to be an emergency exit door sign below it as well (albeit mostly blocked by another sign in front of it) 11:12 If one listens closely, the sound of the panel's relays clicking to both pulse & synchronize the alarms is audible (though when it comes to the latter part how _are_ they synchronized? Do the NAC extenders have Wheelock Sync built-in or do they all have Wheelock DSMs attached? (though that would likely make it impossible to have every single NA synced together, as heard in this video).

      @@TheCarson116Most modern Simplex systems, including the 4100U, have Wheelock sync built in. Wheelock signals are the only non-Simplex devices that are listed for use on Simplex panels and with SmartSync. Wheelock horns will not sync perfectly on SmartSync (the Wheelock horns will be on when the Simplex ones are off) but Wheelock strobes will. This means that it is very common to see Wheelock remote strobes or speaker/strobes used on Simplex systems as a cheaper/ more flexible alternative. The original part of the school was built in 2008 and they had additions in 2009 and 2018. The sync problems only exist in the 2008 parts of the school. They are Simplex SmartSync speaker strobes. Why is it sounding so disgusting? It’s not a mechanical horn, mini horn, or bell. It’s an electrical horn. Electrical horns don’t sound disgusting in the FWR. Do they?

    What do you think would happen if you were to wire that to an EST Genesis Sync Module? Would it sync with an EST Genesis horn strobe, or would it still do the same horn and strobe sync as Wheelock?

    • @weatherdan882002
      @weatherdan882002 Před 2 měsíci

      It'd do neither. Genesis sync modules only pulse the circuit once every couple of minutes because the signals' ability to stay in sync with each other lasts a long time. If this signal were wired to an EST sync module, it'd just do continuous.

    There is a single stroke style and vibration mechanical chimes thing which it’s kinda close to the bell though
