This might become a series. I have already left one place out which would have made the programme too long. Something a little different for your camera and some with quite a poignant story when fate deals a cruel hand through death or a fire. And there is a bit of technique too and not always to do with cameras or lenses! Join this channel to get access to perks: czcams.com/channels/ATkctKLy5D...

this guy a genius. I love him.
Thank you, hope you enjoy the programme when premiered on Friday.
Great video, enjoyed seeing OM5 in action. Do you have any recommendations for learning your spot metering techniques?
Pleased you found the programme of interest. I have recently produced a programme about spot-metering. It is scheduled for preview to Members 9 August, Subscribers 13 September.
Excellent photos that showcase Dartmoor at its best!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the programme. It is part of a 'Magic' series and a podcast is available.
Your choice of music to accompany your exquisite images is magic.
Apart from an obvious song, finding suitable music for Dartmoor wasn't easy. Hopefully, The Planets strikes the right mood.
It certainly was magic, Derek, and as usual I had to pause each photo for quite a while to fully appreciate them all.
I shall have to find some longer music just for you so that you can use the pause button without missing the music!
Great video, I just ordered the OM5. After seeing this I wish I had gotten the 12-45.
I have another programme coming up about the 12-45 Pro Lens next Friday 9 August.
loved everything about the video the photos of course were stunning 😊
Thank you so much 😊
For me you images look well over saturated and over processed
Sorry you find my images oversaturated but I am often producing work for a publishing market. I have just looked at part of the programme and if I am honest my style has changed a bit. I never stand still. It was produced several years ago!
Lovely set of pictures Derek. Do you always use spot metering ? Keep up the good work.
Thank you for your comments. You have highlighted the preview, have you seen the full programme? czcams.com/video/Nc0roF7leVs/video.html Currently, I spot-meter more out of habit than necessity. I publish a new programme every Friday, this week it is Dartmoor. Members receive previews of most of my programmes at least one month ahead. All good wishes and thanks again for getting in touch.
Thanks for this video on spot metering....I use ,ostly center-weighted metering with my Nikon cameras, but finding out that spot metering is giving me better control in my photography! Again., thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Another superb combination of great music and wonderful photographs, all expertly edited into an enthralling video. Thank you, Derek.
Thank you Jim, next Friday Dartmoor.
Your videos are absolutely incredible. Your work is so amazing. I always look forward to your posts.
Thank you. Good to hear that you enjoy and look forward to viewing my new programmes.
That was a lovely dozen minutes. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for getting in contact.
Enjoyable.
@@drazencavar1012 Thank you.
Hi Derek I noticed you as you say have been using the 12-45 lens a lot more lately, I obtained this as the kit lens that came when i purchased the Om-Systems OM-5 some while ago but I personally don't like the lens very much, i still use the Mk1 version of the F-2.8 12.40 which i find for landscape photography a much nicer lens to use, i know its heavier but the difference gives me much more versatility, look forward to seeing your future Videos, best wishes Colin.
Hello Colin. Sorry to learn that you have not been satisfied with the performance of the 12-45 Pro Lens. When I publish my programme on 9th August about the lens you will have to see if I do any better.
John Rylands Library in Manchester is a challenge photographically,
I will have to add Manchester to my list of projects, especially as I have already done Liverpool!
Lovely Video Derek and can always listen to Vaughan Williams Music, the area brings back memories of weekend picnics with my late Mother and Father around Box hill and beyond, being born in south London the Surrey Hills were our go to place, sadly times never to be repeated, again great Video and Images Best wishes, Colin.
Yes, the Surrey Hills are still a place to go for visitors from South London but thankfully(!), we often have it to ourselves on weekdays.
Wonderful! Thank you, Derek, for another great video, which certainly deserves to be viewed more than once.
Glad you liked it from a distant New Zealand. I often think of you when planning new programmes!
@@DerekForss That's nice to know - I feel honoured!
Wonderful countryside, excellent photographs, and the perfect musical accompaniment. Many thanks Derek, as always.
Thank you for your comment. However, whenever I use the complete music as background I feel that I am not interpreting the images aurally in a way that can be better done with extracts at key moments instead of treating music as convenient wallpaper to create a mood. But, I may have got away with it!
@@DerekForss I can see your point, but it still made for a wonderful 'stroll' around some Surrey highlights!
I agree, it did work! Currently choosing some 'meaningful' music for Mid Hants Railway but going beyond 'Pacific 231', if you know it.
the music was the perfect accompaniment for the photos.
Thank you. Vaughan Williams lived in, or was associated with the area for a long time, so I like to think there is a connection with some of his works and not only 'Dives and Lazarus', bu the 5th Symphony too.
Hello Derek....Liverpool Kev here...Thank you for such a patient clear explanation of the vital basics...I have said to you before that with different lenses and cameras it can become completely bewildering...so an understanding of the basics is so important...By the way...Thank you for making me feel young...not a regular treat alas...When you got your first camera...I was one haha!....Thank you Derek...as ever.......'Jaw agape' at your long acquired knowledge and gratitude for selfless sharing...Take care as ever......Liverpool Kev
I was just switching off the computer and up popped your message. Thank you, pleased the basics are important for you. More on the way, couple in the pipeline already!
Hi Derek, just wondered if you have had a chance to use the noise reduction feature in Adobe Lightroom to compare with other software. Church, Cathedral and hall interiors may have a place for it in post production. Regards Peter.
Hello Peter. I have dabbled with the noise reduction feature but not had the opportunity to compare with other software.
@@DerekForss Thank you for the reply, I also meant to ask if you use your tripod do you use the High Res Shot feature ? We are lucky as Olympus users to have these facilities, if required, and it is always valuable to get others more professional thoughts on these features.
Hello Peter. High Res shots for CZcams would not be suitable as I have to resize down my images already for my channel and my publishing clients seem to be happy with images taken with the OM-5 and E-M1mkii without using High Res. I don't use a tripod as the image stabilisers in both Olympus/OM SYSTEM cameras and lenses obviate their need.
@@DerekForss Thank you Derek, how do I get on one of your OM shoots?
Hello Peter. Having reached 80, I have scaled back my operations and no longer drive. First, a bit of history. I ran photo-holidays for many years, but it is much more than that. As a tutor you are responsible for the welfare of your group and the last time I took an Outdoor First Aid course was before Covid. I no longer feel that I am up to the task or accountability of looking after a group and the unthinkable does happen (twice under my watch) and you are a fool to think it won’t and calling for an ambulance is not good enough! There is a lot more you can do for the patient. Therefore, I have retired from running holidays and courses. Because of Covid CZcams has been my salvation where I can continue my photography at a pace convenient for me. I also see my pictures published, such as in calendars. However, I am willing to consider one-to-one tuition and still have my first-aid kit! My technical grasp of today’s photography is not as good as many of my colleagues. I look for the creative aspects in my work, that is seeing a picture, but still using techniques from 50 years ago. If you haven’t already look at my website www.derekforss.com for a clearer idea of what I can offer. If you wish to continue our chat, please use my email address - derekforss@icloud.com. All good wishes and thank you for enquiring. Derek
Your basics offer another world of understanding of how we can go into the field with far more confidence and why we should practice this knowledge! On a personal level, your professorship has elevated my experience, as well as my results, tenfold. I continue to learn something new that I can take into the field. Thank you, Derrick, for sharing your knowledge and making it applicable!
It is great to hear that my programmes, including this basic refresher one, have been so helpful.
I had clicked on this hoping to learn some things about shooting during services and ceremonies, but that isn't what your work is about. But these are beautiful images, and I'm impressed (and I subscribed).
Thank you, pleased you found something of interest and thanks for subscribing.
I don't care what level of photographer you are. It's great to get back to the basics and remind ourselves of what we can achieve. And of course Derek is a fabulous tutor to boot.
A refresher course is always useful, so I am told.
A week ago I upgraded my E-10 to the OM-5. No significant difference in pure photo quality, but a big difference in capabilities. I really enjoy your videos. No one else show the images with explanation and properties as you do. Greetings from Finland. Keep on...
Thank you for your comments. I like to show the proof of what I explain, which I felt was lacking sometimes elsewhere. All waffle, not many pictures!
You take beautiful photos. And i love your voice too. The disadvantage of RAW files is that they are very large. Nowadays I have the camera save in both RAW and high quality jpg. When selecting the photos I use jpg files and if I see a pearl among the photos I use the RAW file. It saves me a lot of time. Do you ever use the high-resolution modes of the camera? For example in a church? Stephan from the Netherlands.
Hello Stephan. I don't use hi-res mode in camera. It would create a file size too large for CZcams to handle and I have never found it necessary in my professional work of getting my images published. So pleased you like my programme and my voice!
Thanks for another great video Derek.
Glad you enjoyed my Birmingham programme. Thank you for letting me know.
Goes to show that one needs to truly learn his gear to get best results! Wonderful shots and commentary.
Couldn't agree more!
brilliant
Thank you.
My personal taste would be to have more contrast. I often find that my first attempt at an image of an interior with bright windows but much of the interior of the room in shadow is to work the sliders to get rid of the shadow and highlight warnings. But when I export from LR, the jpeg looks unnatural. Everyone knows that there should be a very broad dynamic range in such a scene. So I go back and either start over or move the sliders around again to to increase contrast. Often, I slightly blowout highlights and darken shadows selectively. You can spends many minutes, even hours, experimenting!
Thank you for your comments. I do tweak the Contrast myself, but not too much.
Bonjour et merci pour cette vidéo.Aucune église n'est pareil ! et je garde votre façon de prise de vue avec mon EM5 mark III cela est très bien Au plaisir bonne journée
Hello. Indeed every church is different. Good to hear about the success you are experiencing with the E-M5mkiii.
Nice photo Derek , Do you conduct online photography courses?
Hello Richard. Thank you for your enquiry about online photography courses. I used to run Photographic Holidays but Covid changed that. This is when I developed my CZcams Channel and much of any teaching is now done that way. If you are willing to become a Member and support my work financially I may be able to help by producing a new programme about a photo-technique, or a place in the UK to photograph, suggested by you. Therefore, I am unable to offer an online photography course but if becoming a Member and suggesting a topic for the future is of interest, here is the link: - czcams.com/channels/ATkctKLy5DVQ0j72haRs2g.htmljoin
@@DerekForss thanks prefer to paid for course
Wonderful images and superb descriptions, too ! As usual, indeed. I love the way you explain how you shoot and above all how you postproduce images. The tricks you use in Lightroom are great ! To answer a previous comment, I recently bought a 12-45 F4 for my E-M5 III and now it"s almost my unique lens, it's fantastic ! Thank you Derek, greetings from Italy !
Thank you for your comments and greetings from England to Italy. Glad you find my programmes useful and helpful. The 12 -45 Pro Lens although similar in features to the 12-40 does have its own place in the extensive range of Olympus/OM SYSTEM lenses.
The 12 mm to 40 mm F2.8 Pro is close to perfection. I have never seen a bad review, so why OM chose to update to the 12 mm to 45 mm, is beyond me. F4 slower does not compensate for better coating,s? Perhap,s a better wide zoom?
Thank you for your thoughts. I am not sure about the history of the 12-45 but it is the established kit lens for the OM-5, launched last year. Whatever the lens, if the chosen optic works for the photographer, that is all that matters. I came to the 12-45 from the 12-100 and although much lighter, if I am honest I do occasionally find the lack of telephoto a problem. Its optical quality is as good as the 12-100, just confirmed by having one of my 12-45 images reproduced on a calendar and the client is now considering further images from the OM-5 + 12-45 combo. F4 maximum aperture concerned me at first. It does not have its dedicated image stabiliser but used with the OM-5 I can still take indoor images at 1/2 second.
Good pictures, but I claim you may have been able to do the absolute same, with either an omd em5 or em1.
Thank you for your comments. The pictures I show and in the final programme yet to be published are achievable with any quality camera. However, in my introduction I was keen to point out that the entire trip was executed with a light weight camera, not always considered top of the OM-D range, which I would not agree with having used it extensively for over a year. The quality of the lens is amazing despite its limited zoom range when compared to say, the 12-100 Pro.
Excellent video.
Glad you liked it! Thank you.
Super Composition in every shot. I would like to be able to view scenes through your eyes. But I expect that skills comes for years of experience !
Thank you for your comments. You are so right! You can have all the technology at your finger tips but seeing a picture does take years of experience. I used to joke that I could see a picture from 50 paces but it is a skill that cannot be taught even in this 'instant gratification' world.
It was an amazing how a bunch of pilots turned the tide against the Nazi's. The average age of a Battle of Britain pilot was 20 years old. Churchill's famous speech summed it up perfectly.
Thank you for your reflections about my Kenley Airfield programme.
Some excellent photos and great tips - Mottisfont is reasonably close to me and I visit often with both film and digital camera.
Thank you. Good to receive a comment from a photographer who knows the area. It was my first visit, an 80th birthday treat from a friend. We travelled along the A272 from Sussex.
My close friend and mentor Bob Raining lived in Tilford, my wife and I spent time with them there. Brilliant engineer. God bless, Mark Rose..
Thank you, Tilford is indeed in the Surrey Hills.
Beautiful area and video. I noticed when you showed the map that Surrey Hills in near the iconic WWII Battle of Briton airfield Biggin Hill
Three airfields close to where I live protected London during WW2. In addition to Biggin Hill, there was Croydon, now largely built over and Kenley, the best preserved. I have done a programme about Kenley. czcams.com/video/WlzWWCtJ7nA/video.html
Excellent Video -Ireland never disappoints when the weather is good
The new programme about Northern Ireland looks good. Being a Member, you will get a Preview.
Have you done any traveling in the Republic of Ireland
I have done two trips to Kerry and Cork, here are the links: - czcams.com/video/zfSpCUi5P54/video.html czcams.com/video/FCuUyyBpxSY/video.html They were produced some time ago, before Covid.
When you do your church interiors video would it be possible to show where you spot metered from on a before picture then the show the picture with the spot metering applied ? I enjoy your work and am trying to catch on to spot metering . Keep up the excellent work
The programme scheduled for 5 July shown on the preview timetable may help.
