    A good adaption should at least take the core values of the author and the world the books depict in account. That said the best fan fictions in my opinion may expand the world following much of the lore as well as it can. For example, RoP is a bad example of an adaptation or an expansion of the world. Though Tolkien was not exactly a historian he was a historian of language. We might take examples of history and give them somewhat lore-accurate form. Like, who in middle-earth might be compared to a historical person? We might take Black Numenoreans as slave traders, conquistadors, maybe various pirate groups around the world. Easterlings might be compared to Huns etc. As the lore is written to english catholic perspective, clear consepts of good and evil should be applied. And the orcs definitely did not love their children, imagining so would insult all the social workers involved with children. How clueless must the writing room of RoP be, not only about Tolkien, but also of current affairs.

    If I were to adapt the Silmarillion, I'd prefer it to be an animation (not looking too japanese anime). I think that the mythical feel of the First Age would better suit an animation. If, gun to my head, I were to adapt a Second Age story, I would focus heavily on Isildur, Anarion, Elendil, and any love interests they may have had. I'd consider a love triangle where Isildur and Anarion compete to win the affections of one fair Numenorean maiden to keep the female viewers happy. As for inspirations for characterization, PJ's LOTR provides decent clues. Elendil would be closest to Aragorn. Tolkien had said (I think) that Aragorn looks much like Elendil, so that is a natural match. Isildur would resemble Faramir and Anarion would resemble Boromir (in personality). Why? Because the names Isildur and Anarion refer to the Moon and the Sun, which I'll interpret as introverted and extroverted, respectively. The time frame would be just before the Fall of Numenor to the tragic death of Isildur after the fall of Sauron.

  • @LordEriolTolkien
    @LordEriolTolkien Před 21 hodinou

    My understanding was that Tom, existing as a character from an old poem Tolkien wrote, was simply 'drawn into' his wider Legendarium more or less because Tolkien was drawing from All the sources in his mind and he just couldn't prevent Tom from intruding. From memory his addition to the story was described as a surprise to Tolkien himself in that characteristic way he always described his writing as Discovering. Tom lived in the Old Forest not because Tolkien necessarily put him there, but because that is where Tolkien found him. I have always imagined that Tom and Goldberry was another variation of the loving couple, from disparate backgrounds, that is exemplified in Beren and Luthien. It is not inconceivable that a younger Tolkien had imagined a simple quiet life with Edith out in the nature he so loved: an idyllic fairy tale in its own right.

      There's nothing wrong with having them. They just need to be a part of separate cultural groups. In fact, it would be a good way to help keep different groups of characters straight. This kind of works in HotD as it helps make it clear who the members of House Velaryon are. The key with elves in particular is that you have to keep them ethereal and beautiful regardless of their skin pigmentation. You also need to separate their appearance from contemporary fads like fade haircuts.

    So you created a video with the title The True Importance of Tom Bombadil and you just recite the events that took place in the Fellowship of the Ring without providing any further insight about this character, or at least your opinion about his true importance to the story. For example you mentioned that he saved the hobbits and that's why he is important, but this could have been done by any other random character. What's his importance after all to the story itself? What does this overhyped character brings to the progress of the story? Does he reveal anything to the hobbits that will help them to their tale? As for the Rings of Power, the showrunners use this character because he was not used in Peter Jackson's films, in order to prove that they have delved deep in Tolkien's lore, which of course they did not.

    As a fan of the books, I strongly differenciate between books and movies. The movie will be different, must be different in order to play to the strength of the medium. It must be faithful and respectful overall, which PJ accomplished. I would never argue that it must be a 1:1 copy. And some works like Wheel of Time or The Silmarillion shouldn't be touched, because those are not suitable for the film medium. If I were a Hollywood executive, I would look into Joe Abercrombies works for an adaptation...

  • @ladyphoenixgrey3923

    I could listen to you read the entirety of Tolkien’s works, my dude.

  • @currentofthesnake8486

    So nowadays if you want the best for the Silmarillion, you would get Christopher Nolan, Cinematography Roger Dickens, or Denis Villeneuve and Greig Fraser. In a review by a German CZcams channel about the first season of Rings of Power, Ari Aster was also suggested, but if the budget was lower. Otherwise, we really do live in the hack age and I can't really think of any other really good talent. There is no such thing as a mid-budget, so talented filmmakers are stuck in the million dollar art limbo, and aren't given the opportunity to tackle bigger projects. Nobody in today's AI-analyzed film industry will dare to do something like Lord of the Rings with Jackson. So leave the greatest fantasy epic of the 20th century to the director of Braindead. The courage is gone, the creativity is gone and 2024 feels like the death of big cinema, or at least it is pretty seriously sick.

    The greatest thing about Tom, is that he is not explained. It is the mystery of who he is or what he is that makes him. He is whatever you the reader thinks he is. If Tolkien had explained who he was, he would most likely be forgotten about even if he was Eru himself, as the mystery is why everyone keeos talking about him. As for how important he is, well all the characters in Tolkiens writings are very important, even the lowest of ones, because one of the main points of Tolkien's writings is that everyone is important, pull out even the most insignificant characters, even the tiniest change anywhere would change the whole story, we are all interconnected and we all affect each other, even if we actually never meet.

    A few months back I had a theory that Tom Bombadil could be a manifestation of a previous theme that survive into the Third Theme. I still want to believe he was part of the previous theme, but considering a dark creature like Ungoliant had already existed before the Themes, I'm beginning to think that if there is a dark creature, there is an opposite. Tom Bombadil may be a powerful creature of the light, just as Ungoliant was a powerful creature of the dark that existed long before the Themes were created.

    As a vengeful detractor of the odious Peeder Jigson abominations, I would commission a faithful adaptation of LOTR to utterly crush the above mentioned articles into oblivion. It would have to be a long-running animated series, near page-for-page/book-to-screen etc., perhaps 105 mins. per episode. I would hire a team of highly skilled English/European artists and have them draw EXACTLY what's in the book. No pointy ears, no silly halloween costumes, no late medieval grimderp reenactor nonsense, no b-movie monsters. Just what is in the book, absolutely consistent with Tolkien's vision. Voice actors would be representative of the peoples who inspired Tolkien, i.e. characters from Rohan played by actors from the Midlands of England etc. Basically 100% authenticity rendered in beautiful European art style animation.

Beren and Luthien shuld be the ultimate goal for any Tolkien fan, but i think its too hard and the duality betwen Beren heroism and Luthien badass will ruinit in these times because it will become a battle of sexes instead of the most beautiful love story ever made XD... Turin seems more doable as movie, dramatic as hell and a dragon as final boss. Another way is do what SW did for the animation "visions", an anthology of shorts. Let 5 or 10 teams pick a silmarillion history, the only rule is you can ONLY use the books as reference XD...
