I’m primarily an oil painter, specializing in nature landscapes and the figure. Everything begins with a solid foundation on drawing and design, which is what I teach at the college level and in these videos..
Graphite Tonal Still Life Drawing
In this video, I’m drawing a still life in the general to specific approach. Beginning with a gesture/contour drawing, I work with the entire composition in layers, applying larger shapes on value throughout, then working down to the smaller shapes of value for detail, paying attention to light, mid tones, shadows, reflective light and cast shadows in everything. Hatching, cross hatching or other value drawing techniques can be used also, for variety and/or textures.

Centering A 4 Section Grid: Drawing
zhlédnutí 105Před 2 lety
I’m using a grid measuring formula to create 4 equal sections centered on my drawing paper. This is for my drawing students who have to transfer the same image to all 4 sections.
Positive/Negative Shape Ink Project: Photographing Foliage
zhlédnutí 267Před 3 lety
In this video, I discuss what to look for when photographing foliage for a positive/negative shape composition, where only the negative shapes will be inked. The points in this video can also be applied to other composition ideas, such as drawing and painting.

Basic Design: Posterize Your Image Using PicsArt App
zhlédnutí 792Před 3 lety
I’ve created this video for a painting project that my Basic Design students are working on. It’s an easy way to break down shapes of color and value in any image, to aid in creating a more graphic painting. There are many apps that allow you to create a postered effect. PicsArt is my favorite overall for its range of options and ease of use.
Drawing Glass and Metal/Reflective Objects Tutorial
zhlédnutí 22KPřed 3 lety
Drawing glass or reflective materials for the beginner can be an intimidating subject, but it doesn’t need to be. The best way to think of it is as a pattern of value shapes, that all start with a simple line drawing. Drawing in the individual shapes of value first will set you up for a successful drawing. Start lightly, with the larger shapes, working your way to the smaller details. Before yo...

Charcoal Drawing: Getting Started... The Tools You Need
zhlédnutí 1,7KPřed 3 lety
This is an introduction to the basic tools you’ll need to get started with charcoal drawing. In this video, I mention tonal value drawing starting with a toned ground, which is demonstrated in my video “Charcoal Fabric Drawing: Part 1- Subtractive Method”
Charcoal Fabric Drawing: Part 1 Subtractive Method
zhlédnutí 18KPřed 3 lety
In this video, I’m using the subtractive, or ‘Reductive’, method of tonal drawing of fabric starting with a toned ground, using vine charcoal, then creating a gesture drawing of the fabric with charcoal pencils. From there, I use a variety of erasers to pick out the varying degrees of lighter values, leaving the toned ground as the mid-tones and reflective light of the drawing. Vine charcoal an...
Tonal Value Drawing of a Sphere
zhlédnutí 370Před 3 lety
In this video, I show you how to draw a box (or cube) in perspective, from your imagination, and then how to build values to make it three dimensional. I discuss the different levels of value, including highlights, light and shadow comparisons, cast shadow and reflective light.
Tonal Value Drawing of a Sphere
zhlédnutí 229Před 3 lety
This tutorial shows how to draw a 3 dimensional sphere with value, using a range of graphite pencils. I also discuss how value relationships work together to bring out the volume, working with the environment around the sphere.
Drawing Value Scales

In this tutorial, I’m using HB, 2B, 4B and 6B graphite pencils to create value scales using hatching, cross hatching and tonal drawing methods.
Still Life Drawing: Contour Line
zhlédnutí 1,6KPřed 3 lety
This video continues from the laying in of a gesture to working with sensitive line contour drawing in the still life. as student , this was so helpful and useful. I moved away from painting to learn basic of seeing values and I really enjoyed your video. Please keep educating us. super thankful.
I’m so glad it’s been helpful for you! ❤️
Thank you! Excellent instruction.
Fantastic video❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks 🤗
Super, keep the going✏
Thank you 🙂
What paper are you using and which paper do you find best for being able to easily lift the vine charcoal?
Hi! Sorry for the late response. I’m using Strathmore Series 400 Drawing (recycled paper). There are other great papers specifically made for charcoal drawing in the Strathmore series that are worth trying.
Nice 👍
Thank you! 〒▽〒
Welcome! :)
Great, YT needs more clear explanation and demos regarding triangulation. Thanks for your video
Thank you so much! We are studying the subtractive charcoal method in my drawing class, and your videos (part 1 and 2) have augmented my instruction. I appreciate your in-depth analysis/explanation of shadows and I can see how much I am overlooking gradients and other subtle changes in them resulting in flat looking surfaces that lack depth. I like the effect of integrating your techniques and tools. I truly appreciate your instruction and articulation of thought.
Thank you for the wonderful feedback! I’m so happy it’s helping your drawing. I apologize for the very late response. I haven’t been on here as much lately 🙂
Thanks so much I understand now
