At least you seem to be getting out plenty of times, whatever the weather. You did well getting those rainbows in such bright weather. Did you say daddy longlegs? They're one of the best things about late summer!
Hi I make a very light weight daddy longlegs with a deer hair body easy to tie and on a cloudy day fish will happily take it static floating. Regards Rod
Hi roderick buying 10 ft 3 weight interested in what floating fly line you use and recommend
Hi I use these three lines for long cast Masterline thistle down 2-5 in a boat Cortland Sylk 4 weight DT f and dry fly on a calm day Airflo dt3f I hope this helps. Regards Rod
Another lovely video many thanks.
Thanks for your kind comments 😊
I love swinging wets and spiders but am losing fish, particularly when they hit on the hang. Any advice about ‘striking’ when fishing wets? Also, what weight nylon are you using here?
@@stuartmarriott8056 Hi I am the master at losing fish but I have found that a strike is not required just lift the rod a little modern barbless hooks go in so easily and that is the problem they come out so easily , I like a hook shape in which the point curves back on its self a little also wide gape and heavier wire helps. Nylon now I seldom go less than 6lb, modern stuff is so thin now. Regards Rod
Enjoyable video Roderick, I am struggling to locate them on my new river in Highland Perthshire on a Tay tributary, I have been euro nymphing with little success, I think I shall take a leaf from your book and go onto spiders. Tight lines.
This year on my two rivers euro nymphing has been a waste of time for grayling only spiders and dry have worked . So good luck. Regards Rod
Hello Roderick, I'm enjoying your videos. I'm just curious which river this is? I live in Lancaster and am always on the look out for grayling rivers within a reasonable distance. I fish the Eden at Kirkby Stephen and the Hodder occasionally. Also, is this the same river you caught a lovely sea trout in the day, fishinf spiders, in another of your videos?
@@andrewhargreaves7225 Hi it is the Annan very high just now, many thanks. Regards Rod
@@roderickwalker491 Thank you... I was hoping you were going to say that... I was planning to go this Saturday coming but will see how the weather and levels pan out. Thanks again. Andrew
Nice watch been meaning to fish here . Been 15 yr at least since i was last there
fair play nice video i fish in ireland and might just take a trip to sweethope looke lovely to fish
@@chefylad I am sure you would enjoy the day. Regards Rod
A most enjoyable episode, thank you. Couple of questions - do you record air and water temperatures? Also, what is that rather delightful landing net?
The net is from FISHPOND a size down from the boat net. I do not record temp etc because if they are off it affects the way you fish, I do stick my hand in the water and think thats cold or warm today. regards Rod
what type of boats are they ?size ? take 2 anglers comfortably ?does the engine included in price .have tried to look online can't find website
Hi , I used my outboard motor but they do have a few for hire. The boats are first class you can fish two with ease. They use Facebook a lot link facebook.com/search/top?q=sweethope%20loughs%20fly%20fishing&locale=en_GB phone number shone at video start. regards Rod.
Well done roderick I really enjoyed that.
Many thanks it was a great day just the right amount of fish. Regards Rod
Great video
Thanks! 👍
Greetings from Massachusetts U.S.A. Roderick. I enjoy your videos, thank you for taking the time to produce them. Often the rivers that you fish look very similar the local streams that I fish. Although there are no Grayling here, we do have several species of trout and other sport fish that will take a fly, all of which are great fun. I often tie traditional English wet fly patterns and prefer to use them whenever the local fish will cooperate. Thanks again and stay safe on the water- Dean
@@deanf8642 Dean it is thanks to fellow anglers like you that keeps my doing my videos, tight lines.😁 Rod
Very well done. Good tip about the finger nail.Shame on a big company like Snowbee charging that much money.
@@martincorcoran8263 Hi I am doing a video soon on high end fly rods I am sure that most of the claims are bogus as to weight power performance, so no one will risk giving me one to review. Regards Rod
how are you detecting bites - visual or do you make a retrieve?
With down stream wet fly the line is under tension most fish make a hard pull that is so easy to detect, the thing is not to over react too that pull and strike hard and break off. It is just one more skill to add to your fly fishing, in answer to your question I do very little retrieving but have a go your fish may want it. Regards Rod
The panic when the net starts drifting down the river, we've all been there. Good save and another great video 👍
Thanks 👍😃
I tend to cast more across than down, to get a dead drift with the flies moving at the speed of the current. When they get a bit further downstream, I mend the line to keep them moving slowly for longer. Never entirely sure I'm doing the right thing tho! Thanks for your helpful vid.
@@ralpabetical All methods can work or fail, short casts I will often cast square then as my casts get longer I cast more down river to slow the flies down a bit. I am not putting myself on a angling pedestal what works for you keep it up, on a long day I will try all sorts and i can still have a fishless day. Regards Rod
I love wet flies and fishing with them. I use them in various ways, not just down and across. I oon;y use one fly at a time. :-) Nice video.
Thanks for your interest 😊
Keep up the great videos
👍😁
Thanks
Get below the fish ?
Not so easy when most of the time I am upto my waist or deeper in fast flowing water, plus at my age doing anything quickly is a non starter. Regards Rod

@@roderickwalker491 had a 7 pound sea trout off it Saturday night. Tricky job wading though. Best if it comes up a little first to push a few new one's in. So,,, this Saturday should be worth a try.
@@PeterWalls-kq6ye That's a great fish to me better than a 20lb salmon, well done.👍
@@roderickwalker491yep , very clever fish.. in general if it's not complicated I'm not interested. On the nairn they knew me as the sea trout fanatic. Salmon,,,na . Had me fill of um.
Nice fishing, I prefer to use hooks with the barb flattened with pliers rather than barbless, seem to lose less fish and they unhook easily without any damage to the fish. Not fished that river, I am on the Tay system at the moment.
Hi I also do that at times, I just like the quality of those hooks in the small size I was using. I can loose fish even if it was welded to my fly line. Regards Rod
I love to fish wets on my local river, the Tweed, but nearly always just catch parr. You appear to hang your flies in the current for a good while?

My taste in rods is for using light fly lines 2-5 weight, I have been happy with all the under £400 rods and very disappointed in all the expensive rods I have owned. I will cover this in another video soon. In answer to your question YES. Regards Rod
An interesting video Roderick, thanks. Which river were you fishing?
@@paulnevins5936 Hi thanks, the river Annan. Regards Rod
Another great video Roderick. That looks like a lovely river for swinging wets, nice and uniform.
@@KW_FlyFishing Hi there are better sections but I find I always at the back of the queue, my kind of fishing is slow and quiet, I have better fishing on my doorstep the river Eden but most of it is in a public park so dog walkers, swimmers, and stone throwing children spoil the fishing. Regards Rod
@@roderickwalker491 Hi rod, slow and quiet is my kind too. Loving the videos your editing is getting great I'm learning from both your fishing and editing 👍

Very nice indeed. Love the wading through the tall grasses in the intro. Gives a good impression of what it is like accessing the more remote streams.
Many thanks 👍
Fishing is cancelled today-pouring with rain, so your video is most welcome. Which river?
The rivers Annan and Petteril I fish at times Eden Esk etc. 🥴
So nice to watch a vid which doesn’t have all that ‘awesome’, ‘amazing’, and ‘OMG guys !’ nonsense. Very little in life lives up to being quite that good ! Nice also to see I’m not the only one who gets frustrated with the riverbank foliage.
Lots more low key videos to come, I have just finished another four outings for very little so waiting to get a fish or two before I drown on again. Regards Rod
@@roderickwalker491 I’m not sure where you are based but I fish the Tees and surrounding area and a bit of realism is refreshing. Not all trips are productive, but it would be boring if they were. Too many YT fishing vids selectively distil the ‘moments’ at the expense of honesty. We all have days where we blank and the knowledge we are not alone is assuring.
Great video.
@@geoffreyshort5380 many thanks 👍
Lovely stuff. I prefer these kinds of diary style fishing videos much more than any attempts at semi-pro film-making with silly music and editing tricks. I like your style. Thanks for sharing.
@@joosepflies thanks, I can do all the silly tricks but just like you they make me turn off double quick. Regards Rod
I like river fishing over still water..I find the flow rate of water sets the tempo or mood for the day.
It kind of focuses the mind and at the same time blurrs the edges.time loses it significance.
@@robinbeavan5152 Both can be great, night fishing for sea trout to my is the cream unfortunately sea trout numbers are so low I am not prepared to lose the sleep 😴
That is a very philosophically astute comment. The day flows like the river.
Nice fish
Yes, 👍
Hi there fished the Ledmore estate and loch cam for a number of years and had no issues with the boats. Looks Like you hired the boat for the river not for the loch. The Cam is one of the best hidden secret Scottish loch. Don't hire the river boat next time and fish the loch hire the loch boats and pay the proper price.
Hi I to have fished Loch Cam for many years and in the past would have gone for a boat with motor but now I have an electric outboard costing £1800 so I do not want a boat with a fixed petrol outboard, the river boat was the only option. I do not expect to hire a boat full of water with a leak. The cost of hire was not a problem, if you have ever used one of the newer electric outboards you would understand why I made that choice for a boat. Rod
Great video and nice looking stretch of water 👍
@@KW_FlyFishing Hi yes it is lovely bit of fishing but the winter floods took out some of the known hot spots. Regards Rod
It is always a joy to be out. Hemlock water dropwort has a 2000lb breaking strain and is my pet hate.
Dropwort only matched with Scottish heather by a loch side.😄
Nice video. I like the maps and brief synopsis of each place. Very useful for those of who wish to visit one day.
Hi at the time I took that footage it was for my own record, so now I film with CZcams in mind I hope you can see the resent improvements, in short if I go back I will do the video so much better. Many thanks for your comments. Regards Rod
Very nice video. What #16 olive were you using, and did you think the pattern makes a difference ?
At times fish can be fixated on very small impossible to imatate flies but most of the time if you are close to the size they are feeding on you will get sport. The olive fly was just one of my patterns, just a close colour of a natural insect. Regards Rod
Hi Roderick, I really enjoyed watching your video. I'm looking to upgrade my landing net, the one you have in the video looks great. Who is the manufacture and where did you buy it?

Hello Roderick always enjoy your video’s, I fished Hury last year the water was a lot higher then but still enjoyed my day pity it’s eighty miles from my house in Leeds. Not many opportunities down here to fly fish. 🎣
@@peterb443 Hi I know how you feel my favourite fishing is 350 miles to the north of me, try a long weekend and fish Hurry for a couple of days. Regards Rod
What dries were you using please?
Hi I think when I lost the two big fish, a Zulu on the dropper and a white aero wing on the tail fly , size 8 and 14. I make lots of flies for dry fly fishing that are not true to pattern, just lots of colour versions to match what I see on the water. My basic still water setup is a large fly on the dropper and a small fly on the tail , I go down to size 18 a lot of the time, the big fly helps you see the gentle takes on the small fly. Hope this helps. Rod
beautiful rod movement, majestic
