This work obviously draws a bit on 'Sancta Civitas' in its world gone mad aspects but the very late Ezekiel-based 'Vision...' shows the nuts and bolts of apocalypse in a terrifying way. At least the cantata ends with the coming of Christ but here there is no consolation. In a way this work hints at aspects of the 9th symphony which Vaughan Williams apparently only discussed with Stokowski, a student friend of RVW and Holst and an organ scholar as well. We too frequently dismiss the Polish-English/US citizen and should consider their closeness as young music students. The fact that Stokowski flew to England [he hated flying] because VW needed advice on orchestration (ostensibly) helps to explain a lot about why the composer was secretive. Although the 9th shares a key and some devices with symphony #6, it is a neglected work of international importance, as Shostakovich and Bernstein both stated. Thank you for uploading this rare masterpiece but I, for one, will not be pleading with Chandos until the company finds some good old-fashioned sound engineers instead of twiddlers of knobs and "spotlighting" freaks. There is such a thing as a composer actually writing what he/she wants to reach the ears of other human beings with headphones on.

Though many organists play this sweet composition well and many attempt to imitate Virgil Fox's interpretation of Cesar Franck's Andante Cantabile, no one plays this composition as beautifully or better than Virgil Fox. Of course, it helps to have the tonal resources of the Riverside Aeolian-Skinner at his disposal, but only Virgil Fox can serve this wonderful composition to you from the heart.

There has never been another organist that could make AEolian-Skinner Opus 1118 at Riverside sing as beautifully as Virgil Fox could. It was his organ and he was its unrivaled master. I wish that he could have recorded Cesar Franck's Grande Piece Symphonique on the Riverside organ as he did on AEolian-Skinner Opus 1388 at Philharmonic Hall Lincoln Center.

There's only one word for the performance as well as the organ itself... W O W !!!!!!!

I LOVE this performance of this piece! Is it too fast? YES. Does it feel out of control? YES. But it is so exciting!! It sounds like all the devils in hell are on a train that is going too fast and about ready to fly off the rails in a catastrophic crash of pandemonium and chaos! It is WONDERFUL!

This is the only portable theatre pipe organ that was ever made ! It travelled all across the UK with Rginald Foort, although it's in a permanent venue now! This piece shows what a beautiful organ it is too!

Like his style or not, nobody could touch Virgil’s mastery and technical artistry of the complete repertoire, Bach, Durufle, Dupre, etc.Hopefully the type/writer/organists are coming out of the closets with inspired dusted off manuscripts🤪

Will anybody be brave enough to rebuild this organ? It must be falling apart. It has been estimated that 3/4 tonne of dust has fallen into it, the leathers must have collapsed. How about a European fund to rebuild this treasure?

This is one of my favorite recordings of organ music of all time. I would play a lot of organ music on my Halloween radio show when I was in college, and while I always appreciated organ music, it wasn't until I heard this recording that I feel in love with organ music. Pierre Labric's fast tempo adds to the gloominess of the piece and the Cavaillé-Coll organ's Contre Bombarde has a deep throaty sound that you can hear vibrating the building. When I play the recording on iTunes via a sound bar, it vibrates my living room as well. There is a lot of great organ music on this channel, its a shame that there haven't ben any new postings in a while.

Having grown up and lived many years in Atlanta, I always loved going to the Fox theater, hearing the Organ being played. This is excellent!

You had me at St Sernin, but Raynaud is fabulous here! he gets the "strut" (terrible word but it's all I got) that Messiaen has that few players can bring out.
