Welcome to The Sunset Episodes! We are Mike and Michelle, aboard the M/V Sunset, a 2001 Sea Ray 400 Sedan Bridge. We are full time live aboards cruising the Great Loop of America. Come have beer, laugh with us and watch our really crappy videos. No seriously. Our videos have zero production value. Enjoy!
Cummins 6CTA 8.3 impeller replacement tips
Here's what I found to ease the pain of impeller replacement. Spray lubricant into the pump body and rubber vanes. Once the impeller is lubed up, turn the alternator to rotate the engine to break the stiction between the pump body and rubber vanes. Use the same trick on the new impeller to line up the keyway on the shaft. Rotate the engine- which turns the pump shaft-until they both line up. Hope this
helps.

How to save $90 by NOT installing the Fuel Cooler elimination kit
zhlédnutí 75Před rokem
I purchased the Fuel Cooler elimination kit from Seaboard Marine and decided that it was not an easy install. I'm sure if the engine was out of the boat with easier access to the fuel lines, it would be worth it. Instead, buy yourself an 1 3/4" heavy-duty hose and eliminate it yourself. I apologize for the breathing. I'm fat and old.
A rundown of most of the modifications we have done to our 2001 Sea Ray 400 Sedan Bridge
zhlédnutí 1,7KPřed rokem
We wanted to show the modifications we have done over the years. Most of these were done to reduce maintenance and to make life easier. Even though we only anchored about a dozen times on the Great Loop, these changes will allow us to anchor for at least 4 days straight without the need for a generator. That's good, because we don't have one! Forgot to mention, we DON'T have any solar panels. T...
Watching "Beach Girl" back into their slip on a windy day
zhlédnutí 207KPřed rokem
130' Westport "Beach Girl" out of Virginia Beach coming back into their slip after a quick trip to the Bahamas. The captain did a great job. Crew of 7. It's great to watch professionals do their job. Even though honestly, we wanted to watch a car wreck. Glad it didn't happen.
Our thoughts on finishing the Great Loop.....and would we do it again??!?
zhlédnutí 3KPřed rokem
It's been quite a while since we posted a video, but we finally got around to it. After crossing our wake in Mobile Bay just before Thanksgiving 2022, we took some well deserved time off.( Doing the Loop was actually really tiring!) Spent 3 months in Orange Beach. During that time, we had Sunset pulled and did a ton of maintenance. Stripped her bottom to white fiberglass, new bottom paint, inst...
Shooting off a expired fire extinguishers to see if they still would work
zhlédnutí 460Před rokem
The Coast Guard came out with a new regulation stating that any fire extinguisher must have a manufacture date no older than 12 years from inspection. I have seen this experiment before, which turned out to be a dud. Not these! Just shows that these COULD still be serviceable, but not legal according to the USCG.
Replacing 22 yr old Garelick helm seats with American made Tempress ProBax Captains chairs
zhlédnutí 293Před rokem
Another quick what- the -hell video on swapping out our helm seats. The original Garelick flip up seats were wore out. We didn't want to buy new pedestals, so I gutted everything that didn't work. A lot of leftover parts that weren't needed and yet still used the old pedestals. Worked out great !
Twin Disc MG5061A gear oil change
zhlédnutí 4,6KPřed rokem
Quick video on how to change the oil on a Twin Disc marine transmission. Part of the 2000 hour service that I'm doing on the engines. Easy job. I've learned a lot on CZcams, so I hope this helps others. Your results may vary 😂
Rarely heard - and quite entertaining - crew audio of how they cram barges into a lock

Crew audio of the M/V Melvin King of Yazoo River Towing loading barges into the Wilson Lock. Behind the scenes stuff that nobody ever hears. Respect for these guys.

A beautiful morning to go through Chicago

Had to get up early to get through Chicago's bridges to get down to Joliet. 2 locks and under 140 bridges later. Great day for cruising.
View from inside lock #8 on the Trent Severn Waterway
zhlédnutí 143Před 2 lety
Quick shot of how most of the locks are operated and how our PVC fender boards work. They work fine, until the one time that it got caught on the cables on the lock walls. You'll know that in a hurry when your boat comes to a quick stop! Best to wait until you're stopped, and then drop them down. Another learning experience on the loop!

where is the sensor located on the engine, it is a little difficult to tell in the video?
How do you turn the alternator?
Thanks for going to the effort to make this and share.I’d love to go down there and to Green cove boatyard as well.
Hey, great videos, I have the same boat , same year, can you share how you mounted and flush your engines, how you did the setup ? Thank you Fernando DaCosta. ❤
Did you remove the cooler to get to the port impeller? So difficult to reach it..
I agree, very difficult. I don't remove the cooler, but we did a couple things to make it easier to get to. The original couch was removed (replaced with easy to move chairs) and the engine hatch piano hinge was also removed. That way we can remove the whole hatch. That makes it a LITTLE easier, but still a pain. A mirror on a stick is also your friend.
@@thesunsetepisodes1472 I used a piston ring compressor and silicone grease worked awesome!
That's brilliant! I had thought of that, but don't have one. Great idea. I have been using zip ties and hand soap, but I think I may need a new tool!
Curious to see how you were able to turn the impeller using the alternator
Kudos on the mods, all of them, so smart!
Very nice. How did you arrange charging the different battery banks (hull shield; house; fridge; engine)? Do you manually throw a switch etc? cheers.
Hey James, Thanks for your comment. Yes, the lithium house bank is wired through the existing wiring for the non-existent generator. I simply turn on the inverter and swap the source switch at the power control panel. The batteries for the fridge and gull shield are on manual switches.
Forgot to ask your original question. Each battery has their own charger. 30amp for house, 10 amp each for fridge and hull shield. I turn them on when at port to recharge.
Good video- I like the boat
That's some good storytelling about what happened. I don't mind how you do your videos. You're doing fine.
Nice debrief.
Nice night shots of what happens at a marina and the boat coming in through the bay. Enjoyed the video! I bet the pizza was good.
What a good story about what can happen while out in your boat doing the loop. Glad everything turned out ok for y'all.
I'm sure things got better. 🤠
Nice job, being handy pays off.
Thanks. Wise man once said, if the women don't find you handsome, at least you can be handy
I like the content, just saying, and I'm one of the 12.
We are mid 50s and thinking about doing the loop in 3 years. Wish we were going around with you guys, love the attitude and not looking forward to hanging with 70 year olds.
Do you mind sharing boat weight and cruise speed/rpm.
Just subscribed. Got hooked in by the hatch hinge removal video so watching from the start. Still trying to figure out how the hatch thing helped
how long did it last ?
I'm looking for a cheap sailboat too. I know where to look now
