Are you one of the many, *many* people who "like" a little too much? Like, you pepper your speech with "like" so often it practically stands in for, like, a comma? Or maybe there is another filler noise that's messing up your verbiage - the infamous uh, um, and ah , or perhaps their pernicious cousins y'know and so. Once you hear someone who says like multiple times per sentence it's not so much disliking it; you just hear the likes and it distracts from what they're saying. I've also found that I've started saying like myself which really worries me. It's so ubiquitous.

    I hate it. When its used every third word. Used unnecessarily.mid or end sentence. I got my energy from like. WTF does that even mean?. How can you get energy from like. Or I was like. Like what ?

    I noticed there are a lot of hand gestures when you communicate. This is a huge red flag in Japan if you were to do this in front of a person, they find these gestures rude and invasive as if you're taking their space. Something that I got rid of too over the years.

    Love your videos! There are uptalkers, people with vocal fry, grunters at the end of sentences and also "precise talkers" like you yourself border on in some of your videos. This to an extreme can be just as annoying as the rest. Just a little constructive criticism as every T for instance does not need to be pronounced and every word does not have to be said so precisely.

    Dear Lauren, thank you for this video. My son is a master degree professional and he has a habit of using too many likes when he speaks. My son is kind and helps many people as a social worker, he is truly making a difference in our society. His degree is in psychology and sociology. I think his main problem is that he speaks too fast. My son is very intelligent and I would hate for other professional to judge him for such a bad habit of overly using "like" a bit too much. (As you know people could be cruel and judgemental, specially by the vocabulary we use in regular conversation. (When I was in college, I remember my English teachers would say, " We all are judge by the vocabulary we use") I loved your tactics on how to stop over using " Like" . Thanks for your video. ❤

  • @AyoMrB
    @AyoMrB Před 7 měsíci

    Thanks Lauren! I have a tendency to speak too fast and use the word "and" too frequently to string together a lot of thoughts. Slowing down and incorporating pauses really does help. I notice great speakers have a similar tempo and efficient use of pauses. The example of you going from saying like too much to slowing down really gave the feel that you took back control of the conversation, similar to an adult telling a child to slow down or relax in a slower tempo in a deeper toned voice. I appreciate all the advice.

    Clearly, a lot of people need to fix this problem but aren’t doing anything. I had been thinking of excess “like” words was simply a desire to sound cool or hip. …By the way, I have always had an occasional stutter and I wonder if she discusses solutions to this embarrassing problem.

    Great take on this topic, Lauren. For me, the underlying goal of writing and giving speeches is personal growth. That isn't going to happen if I let ChatGPT do the work for me (even if it were more competent). But like you mentioned, I have found it to be a great tool for giving me ideas. It's also good to keep up with AI progress, and how best to use it, as it may have an enormous impact in the future as it evolves into who knows what!
