My dad was extra sad this year over his potatoes. The extensive rain and high moisture level of the past year caused them to either rot in the ground or have the plants grow badly enough to leave the potatoes that did survive small and twisted. He's been growing his own for over 40 years and this is the first time he's going to have to buy store bought potatoes to supplement his harvest.

75 hard is great advice. With the Texas heat I haven't taken a hot shower in weeks so I have that part down. 😂😂😂

This is a great idea. I got ahold of Chinese yams this year even though they are not cold hardy enough for my area. Ground nut (apios americana) is an alternative worth looking into for colder climates. They have a similar taste and texture as chestnuts.

I got my hands on a thermal camera. Concrete was around 92 plus, plants were around 82 to 85, uncovered soil was 125 degrees. Sand in a bucket, was around 95 degrees. Covering your soil is vital. Our afternoon high today was 85.

I thought about doing some gorilla gardening by a local business but the only thing green in their "grass" is the rings around their tree's, so I'd have plant close to their tree ring to get any water. Year old FEDEX warehouse & they can't even take care of their lawn. 🙄 I'll have to wait till spring, it'll blend in for a little bit. Lol

The Chinese yams sound very interesting to grow in the food forest. There are some interesting planting methods on Mountain Gardens CZcams channel entitled Chinese Yam (shan yao). Check it out. It would be great if you could interview this man, Joe Hollis. He’s a wealth of information and I think he’s on your side of North Carolina.

i have 3 small strawberry patches in my front yard, all everbearing, one quinalt one ozark beauty and some red flowered variety I don't know the name of. sadly they don't produce runners like the others though.

A good idea you can eat every part of that sweet potato or yam there’s a very good idea. There’s other varieties that grow really big. The leaves and the stems are the good parts.

Great idea that I may be able to replace the Smilax laurifolia that was growing in my pasture. I was excited to eat the new growth leaves, but so were my goats. Unfortunately, I put pigs in there and they rooted up all the roots so I no longer have it growing wild.

Mark from selfsufficientme did a similar thing on his raised beds. He planted some peas and used sugarcanes for his trellis. Thought he probably did not plan this, when the peas were done he was left with sugarcanes taking root into the bed, so he also got a sugarcane harvest out of those as well (though it took some months later i guess). David the good also always somehow finds a way or ends up with double purpose planting. Which is awesome. Point is, nature is not that neat and tidy, where everything is separate etc. sometimes it’s kinda chaotic. But everything serves a common purpose and has multiple uses. Food jungles are the best jungles to have.
