Occasional listener here and have always enjoyed every episode I've heard. It's strange how some things surge while others don't. There's no, er, rhyme or reason to it. But thank you both for your joint effort in putting these podcasts together. I, for one, will cheer for your next collaboration. By the way, Giles, many years ago (1970s?) I was given one of your early books as a Christmas present. I forget the title, but it included a recipe for Welsh Rarebit! iirc, it included all sorts of wonderful ingredients, such as Worcester sauce, mustard and so on. Keep up the good work, both of you, whatever it may be.

Words that belie there meaning! How many are there? For me one word which seems inappropriate is prosaic.

I'm loving this podcast ❤ Hilarious to me that Giles is fascinated by what goes on in a confessional. It's all about perspective. I was in Hong Kong, a long time ago, when a local found out I was from Ireland he exclaimed "how exotic!". Lol my mind was blown that someone could think of my boring bit of the world as exotic.

I love all your podcasts but especially liked this one as I have been involved in a lot of medieval re-enactments. I was invited to go to Agincourt with the Plantagenet Society because I speak French and know a few medieval French Folksongs. There was a slight problem because I didn't have all the medieval vocabulary I needed. One of the knights asked me how to say to a French woman "Give me a favour." I did not know the word in French for favour but I thought I'm a linguist, I can do it. What I said was, "Donnez-moi une porte de bonheur (something to bring luck). He approached the woman and only remembered the beginning, "Donnez-moi une porte!' I had a vision of him killing his opponent by bashing him with a door! It turns out the word favour came from the French, faveur!

Hi all. only recently discovered this wonderful program. You mentioned Tide meaning Time. Reminds me of when we were doing our family research and discovered a relative in the 1800's travelled to Simonstown Cape Town in South Africa to fulfill his appointment as a Tide Waiter. As far as I have discovered he would collect Taxes from incoming ships. Obviously waiting for the tide to go out. Thank you for this wonderful program.

I live in the States and started watching 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown a couple of years back. And, of course, Susie's on that show, too. I came across this link czcams.com/video/EsAIgVxXeiQ/video.html which is Susie's first appearance on Countdount back in 1992. Even today, she's still lovely as ever.

I've never seen this show, only the Cats Does Countdown version. I wonder if I can find this here in the US.

I thought Susie would do it this way: 6 / 6 = 1 100 - 1 = 99 99 * 7 = 693 693 + 50 = 743

743 6÷6=1 100-1=99×7=693+50=743

I suppose it's kind of obvious that you can get it as a multiple of 25 once you add the 4 for 421+4=425, so fair game to Susie; however, the easier and more obvious solution to me would be... 4*4*25=400 then 10-3=7 and 7*3=21 add them together for 400+21=421
