WIDE OPEN RACE: Which 'Cranky' Star Will Claim the US Open Title in New York?
The final grand slam of the tennis season has arrived, and the US Open promises to be one of the most captivating tournaments of the year. Women’s world No. 1 Iga Świątek has openly discussed the “demanding” nature of this year’s tour, while 18-time grand slam champion Chris Evert described it to CNN as "a really challenging year for everyone involved.”
Evert highlighted that the intensity of the season has led to high emotions and even meltdowns on the court. “These top players are a bit cranky because they’ve had a full year, playing more tournaments than ever, plus the emotional drain of the Olympics,” Evert told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. “As we approach the end of the year, the field is as open as I’ve ever seen it. Everyone’s tired, and the winner will be the one who can find that last bit of energy and motivation to deliver their best tennis over the next two weeks.” Both Evert and tennis legend Martina Navratilova told Amanpour that it’s difficult to see a winner in the women’s draw outside the top four: Świątek, Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, or Elena Rybakina.
Świątek, the 2022 US Open champion, is known for her dominance on clay but faced a surprising semifinal loss at the Olympics. She rebounded to win the bronze medal in Paris and reached the semifinals at the Cincinnati Open, where she was outplayed by an in-form Sabalenka.
Sabalenka, a two-time Australian Open singles champion, skipped the Olympics to focus on her preparation for the US Open, a decision that seems to have paid off. Another stadium imitating a tent. Where have I seen this before? Disappointment from the inside as well. The previous designs were better I dare say. I assume that they are slowly finding out how much money is needed for such a project. It will be a surprise if they can actually build this as well with the budget they set at 500 million.
