Trek Domane SL5 vs Aero Bike: SPEED TEST
CORRECTION: At 4:36 I mention the difference in wattage was 14 watts, but I meant to say 18 watts!
I compare the 2023 Trek Domane SL5 against in a speed test against an all out aero race bike, in this case, the 2020 Cervelo S3. The results really surprised me.
The Trek Domane was almost just as fast as the Cervelo S3 aero race bike, despite the Trek having a full stack of spacers and an upwards slanting stem. I think this is because I dressed it up with aero wheels, race tires, and an aero handlebar, which just goes to show how versatile that bike can be.

    You know something interesting, on the topic of power output and speed, I think some frames have a definite advantage over others in terms of power transfer and efficiency. Anecdotally, the Aethos has the most efficient power transfer of any bike I've ever ridden (albeit, I don't have much experience with really high-end bikes). It really stands out in terms of how easy it is to pedal. It seriously feels like there is an electric motor giving you a slight push. Diabetic Cycling on YT also noted that the Tarmac SL8, which inherited some design characteristics from the Aethos, is the easiest riding bike he's ever ridden (and he rides all the high-end bikes). He even measured the power output on the SL8 and found that he consistently saved a non-insignificant amount of power (I think 10W) for the same speed on other bikes.

    Hey, great video! I too am a former racer. I raced for decades, and there were many great times, but my days of killing it in road races and crits are behind me now. I turned 60 this year, and I want a machine that I can make go as fast as I need on group rides and at the occasional sportive, but has a little bit less tightly sprung, less twitchy demeanor. I have a 2024/5 Domane SL5 Gen4 arriving tomorrow along with a set of the Aeolus Elite 37 carbon wheels. I will load some 700x32c Conti GP5000STR tires onto those Aeolus wheels. I do plan to also swap out the handlebar for an S-Works carbon Hover Bar. Yes, I know some think it's a sin to place a Brand S handlebar on a Trek, but it's a great way to maintain the smooth ride, reduce saddle-to-handlebar drop without installing a riser stem, and shave a lot of weight. Those stock IsoZone handlebars are not only too wide, but also HEAVY. The stock saddle will also go away, my lower chassis doesn't get along with short-nose saddles or saddles with big cutouts. I've found comfort with SQ-Labs saddles. Saddles and handlebars can be a bit like shoes and gloves. Sort of a personal fitting option. This looks like a great bike for me to enjoy for at least the next decade.

      @@hikerbikeromar thanks for the quick reply.. So, why do "race" bikes come with such skinny tires & why are those bikes so limited as to putting on wider tires 🤔 Trek emonda sl5 is supposed to be quicker than the domane & max tire size is only 28mm...why would they limit it to only 28mm if they want it to be quicker I'm just trying to understand this Thanks again & keep up the great content as always 👍 👌

    • @hikerbikeromar
      @hikerbikeromar Před 15 dny

      @@smkaz81 Hey yeah for sure! So to be fair, this is sort of an emerging science and it's considered new information to the cycling world. A lot of people like me still don't fully understand the physics behind it. But essentially the theory states that wider tires are faster mostly because of road imperfections. Since most roads are not completely smooth, really skinny tires will experience micro bumps as they traverse the road surface, whereas wider tires will glide over more smoothly. The micro bumps that skinny tires experience basically translates to higher rolling resistance, and hence a slower speed. Most race bikes nowadays have leaned into this trend and now offer tire clearance wider than we've ever seen before. The Cervelo S5 for example I believe has 34mm tire clearance. There is a limit though. Most people seem to indicate 30mm is about the limit before the aerodynamics of a wider tire start to work against you more so than rolling resistance. I'm certainly no expert, but that's the theory!

I recently did a test of my Colnago C40 to my Dogma F10 with identical fitment, same wheels used and PM. The F10 is literally only .1 mph. That is Decimal Point( .1) mph faster. That is it! If rolling resistance is dominant at lower speed as you tested, you would see aero differences magnified as you increase average course speed. Yeah that's the biggest problem with the 58...the stack drops to a 610 (61 cm frame is a 644) which is kinda crazy that much drop between frame sizes. So you are given these bikes for a short period of time to test ride them and make videos about them??

      @@sertac1000 interesting! Those bikes are usually pretty top notch, but maybe it’s the aluminum frame that is holding you back?

    I'm on a Cervelo S5. I used to ride a canyon Aeroad. Bottom line, the S5 is worth it. Of course, it is better to ride the S5 if you have a flexible body. If you have a stiff body, you may regret buying the bike. I didn't buy the S5 because I'm rich, I bought it because I'm crazy about bikes. The S5 is just out of nowhere fast. Canyon Aeroad is showing me graphs and telling me theirs is the fastest. But when you ride it, it's different. Of course, there's a lot to think about when you buy an S5. Wheelsets, tires, and even chain oil. One thing's for sure, if the S5 is your dream bike, you'll be happy with it.

    Noticed the Roadmachine 01 Four is on sale for a similar price. Would you suggest that or the Roadmachine Three given similar price point?

    • @hikerbikeromar
      @hikerbikeromar Před 25 dny

      Oh wow, just noticed that too! That's a really awesome deal. I would absolutely go for the Roadmachine 01 Four instead. It's going to be a better carbon, a better wheelset, and an integrated cockpit. Between the two for almost the same price, I'd say the 01 Four is a no brainer. You may even be able to negotiate a bit more off as well. Thanks for sharing!

      I have yes. Actually, I also did a review on it too linked below. I personally didn't tell much difference between the S5 vs Soloist, but I'm sure others would disagree. Since the Soloist is more affordable, it's easier to recommend. czcams.com/video/9SJMmj3fh50/video.html

    Thanks for the review, great information! Curious as to your opinion on how the Trek Domane SL5 Gen 4 would compare to BMC's Roadmachine Five?

    • @hikerbikeromar
      @hikerbikeromar Před měsícem

      Thanks! Both are great bikes. The 2023 Roadmachine is going to be a bit more aggressive and will probably feel a bit snappier and more racy, whereas the Domane in my opinion is more comfortable and predictable. I actually did a review on the 2023 Roadmachine Three which you can find below, which is similar to the Roadmachine Five. czcams.com/video/5OgR-VRFlV0/video.htmlsi=QWiWnaCRje8yGX06 The brand new 2025 Roadmachine I haven't ridden yet, but judging by the geometry, it will have a higher stack than the Domane but a longer reach. I'm curious to try it.

Kudos to them for fixing it before it’s a problem - but I have no idea what that means! Was so looking forward to getting it too!! Going to be a couple of days.

    Thank you very much for your valuable recommendations! I just wonder why you didn't choose the tubeless version of the gp5000.. Should I consider tubeless and is it that complicated for a beginner? I have trek Domane SL5 and wanna ride 70% asphalt 30% light gravel.

    • @hikerbikeromar
      @hikerbikeromar Před měsícem

      You are welcome! I personally never got super into the tubeless systems. Some would disagree, but I think they add a bit of complexity/mess and I don't really see the benefit. Others will tell you they are more puncture resistant, but using the setup I showed in this video, I can count on one hand the number of punctures I've gotten in many years I've been cycling.
