The boy soloists really hold their own in their demanding solos. Really excellent performance by all. Btw the orchestra, the tenors and the basses consist of "members of the Vienna State Opera".

Sehr schöne Aufführung, die mich an die Zeit zurückerinnert, in der ich selbst das Alt-Solo bei den "Wiener Sängerknaben" in der Wiener Hofburgkapelle gesungen habe. Gefürchtet war im "Gloria" die Stelle "propter magnam gloriam tuam", bei der man in die Kopfstimme "umschalten" musste, um sie sauber bewältigen zu können. In der ersten Reihe der Zuhörer kann ich hier auf der linken Seite Hofrat Dr. Walter Tautschnig erkennen, den damaligen Leiter des Kulturinstituts "Wiener Sängerknaben": Zu meiner Zeit im Chor, vor gut 65 Jahren, war das der legendäre Rektor Monsignore Josef Schnitt, der das Institut mit großem persönlichen Einsatz nach dem Weltkrieg neu aufgebaut hat. Er war auch bei meiner Aufnahmsprüfung dabei, bei der ich das "Heidenröslein" zu seiner vollsten Zufriedenheit singen durfte. Darauf wurde ich dann in Alt-Stimme eingestuft und in der Folge zum Solisten ausgebildet. Eine schöne Zeit!

No its not max. Max sang on mahler no 4 with liubljana symphony orchestra cd stradivara classics considered the best interpation of mahler no4. Also on philips 1990-98 mozart was under the direction of uwe christian harrer....was a great time for sangerknaben also dvd laser and cd take your pick.

Yes, we don't want these nasty Italian sounds, Cheese,Chaws and Onions. Let's have Agggnus Day-ee and Passsem and other good real latin sounds, I imagine that in Haydn's time they were being bullied into Vatican-Italian sounds.

A "real" spinto usually non has the coloratura for the first act. It's a bit the same story with "Traviata".

I guess we must thank this "Theresa" for Haydn's inspiration. But this Mass is beyond all of that. Each part is heavenly. To me, one of the greatest of all Mass compositions. Danke Schoen, Josef.
Nothing to do with Theresa. The last six masses composed between 1796 and 1802 were probably in the case of the first three, and definitely in the case of the last three - including this one - written for the annual ‘Nameday’ celebrations in September each year for the Princess Marie Hermenegild Eszterhazy. In 1807, Beethoven wrote his Mass in C for the same purpose (Haydn was in retirement). The Princess was very good to Haydn in his last years, and he produced six of the greatest masses ever composed for her.
In the 1970s, when I first heard the Masses of Haydn, I was startled by how the tune of the BENEDICTUS partly resembles JOY TO THE WORLD.

Except the Vienna Boys Choir, all other Austrian ensembles are mixed.
To the best of my knowledge, the Wiltener Sängerknaben as well as the St Florianer Sängerknaben are also all-male choirs (as indicated by their names).
