Lets finish the rear end and get this thing on the ground!!
Only Chevy and Pontiac got a version of this generation. When it had a major restyle in '78 it was renamed to Monza for Chevy, Sunbird for Pontiac and Olds and Buick got one as well. I had a '76 Astre. Nice looking car but build quality and reliability was beyond terrible.
It already has chevy in it from factory so who cares what goes in. I have a 355 chevy in my 75 pontias astre they fit easier so go with whats goin to work the best good luck with what u decide
This is great!
Not all drive by cable are red/blue 03 and up Express Van green/blue connector drive by cable
Great Info. I’m Following along Since I plan on doing an Ls swap very soon on a project truck. Question.... how the F do you unplug the two connectors on the 4l60e gear selector? Are they glued into place?
I picked up a 76 station wagon with a V6. Factory. Like the Vegas GM did play with the idea of a V8. But went with the Cosworth. Using GM factory part from a local dealership I built 13 V8 hatchbacks and wagons. I even built one into a El Comino look alike.
Friend of mine owned 1977 yellow Pontiac Aster we put a V6 in that car and it came out of a 1977 Olds Starfire with a Factory 4 Barrel
My mom owned a 1977 Pontiac astre and I end up total it
Dude, you’re a fabrication master, this build is insane
Hi knew to this trying to get information 4 stud to 5 stud and bigger brakes front and rear ! Please
Jim thanks for the update with part 19. Not sure if you meant to turn off comments or not but they are turned off. Very interesting to see how you put this jigsaw puzzle together!
Hey Jim any updates coming?
FOLLOWING! just bought a 75 Astre
Buick Skyhawk was based on the Chevy Monza body . Only Astre shared the Vega body
UPDATE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You spelled "mounting" wrong. :D Interesting build for sure.
Yay a new episode!
Love your CAD program, Cardboard Aided Design!
You said earlier that you were going to stitch weld the seam, but at the end you said you would use seam sealer. What made you change your mind?
Hey Kenton, sorry I miss spoke. I fully welded everything together. I will then come back with seam sealer on all the welded areas to make everything watertight. Sorry for the confusion.
I watched a few of the videos of this right through and then skimmed through the rest. What is the benefit of doing this? What is the car owner looking to achieve?
Dave, thanks for the comment. He has a 71 Vega that is a Baldwin Motion clone with a 400 small block. It is great to run to local car shows with, but is not practical for long trips. The plan for this one is a car he can drive to shows on a long road trip. We have a 5.3 l with a 4L65e on the shelf. This will give the modern fuel injection and highway friendliness. We put a 5.3l in his 82 C10 short bed a few years ago and he drove part of the 2018 Power tour and loved it. It will have a Pro-Touring/Resto Mod style with good handling characteristics. We both like updating cars to be able to enjoy them on long trips and have readily available parts a any parts store. Hope this helps and that you will keep enjoying our videos!!
@@jimsgarageadventures8637 Hey Jim thanks for the reply. I have wondered what is out there for coil overs for Vegas but have not tried anything yet myself. I presently have a 74 Astre with a SBC in it. Had a 76 Vega with a SBC in it as well. It is so easy to do. Seems like so much work to graft a front on for what you get in performance with what you are doing there. I stuck a 262 Monza motor in my 76 with a 5 speed out of a Pontiac Ventura and I would get 27 mpg on the highway with that thing. Had a Edelbrock intake with a spread bore carb. I am planning on completely going over my Astre and buying a late model Chevy from Copart and doing a new engine swap. We had an auto wrecking yard when I was young and I could experiment with many things. Makes it hard to figure out now that we no longer have the yard.
@@davebrittain9216 Hey Dave. We had a lot of rust in the frame rail under the battery box that totally destroyed the area where the idler arm is. Plus, I like a challenge and wanted to do something different. Speaking of different... Look into the Cadillac ATC from I think 2015 and up. They have a 2.0l with a six speed that has a factory turbo. I would have loved to put one of those in this car but the owner really wants another LS. Jim
@@jimsgarageadventures8637 I am a big fan of restomod cars! Will be watching the entire build.
If i want to do a ls conversion on a 70's gm, could i not just get a ecm, run all wires in the car new for the ls & use a new fuse block set up for the cars factory wiring, therefore connecting the old & new ? I would probably buy new ls connections for everything.
Hi, where did this tire stands come from?
A very odd way of dealing with this. I have looked through a few of the videos on this project. The Vega/Astre with GT suspension handles quite well and with decent quality shocks. I would have just added the GT components to make it handle. It comes with disc brakes on the front and I would have added some to the back. The only thing would be adding up front is rack and pinion steering but the Vega steering box is a decent unit and is reproduced and sold as they are used in hot rods all the time because of their look, small size and good performance. I have built a couple of V8 Vegas and have one now. Seems like so much work and potential problems for very little gain, not sure why you guys decided to go this route.
exactly how i do mine. much easier starting from scratch.
Kenton, Thanks for the comment. I am trying to take my time and do the best I can the first time. We are hoping this type of upgrade might be an option in the future to repair rusted cars to bring them up to modern handling and open up the part availability. Jim
Hey Jim, I’ve been checking out your progress on this build, wanted to ask how the Dakota Digital Nova cluster fits, length and height wise? I was thinking the 69 to 76 would have been closer but was just eyeballing and guess work
Looks like you are methodically thinking out the process before cutting away which is nice as I have seen a lot of Vega's/Astre's cut up and messed up, only for the whole car to be junked. I like these cars original with the puny four-banger, but I am one of very few that think that.
Kenton I will agree with you on you being one the few that like the 4 banger. :) I put a V8 in my Vega and my Astre. Makes the car very impressive and it gets decent gas mileage. I drove mine across Canada years back with the V8 with a 5spd and I got 27 MPG.
