This has been a fascinating series of videos and I only wish I had seen it before my operation. I had been suffering from hip pain for about a year and finally got to see a specialist. After an X-ray and an MRI, she recommended a cortisone injection. Since this did not work, we moved on to a hyaluronic injection. This didn't work either and by now I was getting desperate so I asked my wife (who is a nurse at a large university hospital) if she could find me another specialist. He suggested trying stem-cell technology. This involves drawing blood, certrifuging it to extract the platelets and then reinjecting these into the hip joint. Sadly, this did not work either so he suggested a total hip replacement. I spoke to several friends who I knew had had the operation and everybody was very positive so I signed up for it. I was scheduled for the operation in early December of 2023. I had all the usual pre-op tests and was operated on from the side using an epidural as anaesthetic. The surgeon said the operation had been a success and that I had not lost much blood during the process. However, I subsequently developed an internal haemorrhage and my haemoglobin levels dropped from 15 to 7 so I had to have a transfusion of two bags of blood and a course of iron tablets. This, coupled with the fact that I was not used to sleeping on my back, kept me in hospital for a week and so my recovery got off to a slow start. However, I was determined to get moving as quickly as possible and by Christmas had progressed from a walker to two crutches. However, my surgeon said that physiotherapy was not necessary and that I would recover just by walking. I saw him again at the end of January 2024 and he suggested that I drop one of the crutches but still said I did not need physio. By then the pain from the operation had subsided but there was stiffness and weakness in the joint and although I could move around with the help of a crutch, I limped badly when I tried to walk without one. This went on for several months until I spoke to a friend who had had a THR and he said physio was fundamental and recommended a good physio who I started to see in June. Needless to say, things have improved dramatically, and whilst I still have some stiffness and weakness in the joint, I can walk, drive and ride a bicycle more or less OK. I can't help feeling the I was given bad advice by the surgeon on the importance of physiotherapy and would be in a much better place now if I had started physio immediately after the operation.

I had a hip replacement on March 13, after 7 wks, I dislocated twice, 4 days apart. It was horrible!!! My surgeon said he had the ball at the wrong angle so, I then needed a revision which I had May 21st. This has been a horrible experience all the way around. The pain has been brutal and progress, like molasses. They said it would go like this unfortunately. I’ve had a therapist once a week here for 3 weeks. She’s had me doing PT but even though I’m 5-6 weeks post op, my therapy’s more of this two week in progress. The therapist is done now and I’m on my own looking forward to what PT I should continue with and how many reps etc. I’m doing the ones in this video now actually but, I don’t know when to move on exactly?? Depending on my pain level I guess???? Thank you for this video and ANY ADVICE you may have! I really appreciate it!!!!!

I think the idea that a revision ( 2nd replacement) of a hip is just a 3 month interruption is misguided. Revisions require longer prosthetics which tend to be less stable long term, so at that stage running is very unlikely as are other sporting activities, so management of a replaced hip to extend its life are important.

I think I must be a different healing process ( deep muscle cuts 6/7 layers of stitching is what I was told) so, I was much less mobile than this lady but am slowly getting there 😊 I was also lucky that my GP, physio and surgeon all understood that the amount of pain I was in and my very limited mobility indicated that there was more damage than the X-ray and MRI indicated. Turns out I also had total cartiledge wear on top of the femur, not visible until discovered during surgery

Thinking a THR may be in future but want to remain active, want to return to running at least couple miles daily. OMG, you poor thing. Why is it pending for so long? Didn't your doctor tell you that the longer it takes the more difficult the operation will be? I will be having the anterior approach (which is supposed to be better than posterior) hip replacement in April. I have Bursitis and osteoarthritis in my right hip. I've literally been dependent on Diclofenac, the worst medication and Tylenol Arthritis pain relievers but still get pain. Part of my socket has deteriorated and I'm bone on bone. Sometimes I can't sleep at night or could barely walk due to so much pain. This started since I think in 2016 but was exacerbated when I went to Six Flags, all that walking and left limping back in 2022. I was told that since I'm bone on bone it's better to not wait. Be careful because you don't want to be wheelchair bound if you do not get the surgery sooner but I hope that does not happen to you at all. I wish you the best of luck and hope you finally get your surgery.
