now do the journals
I actually did do them just to take down any gouging. Motor has like 40k on it still running strong.
I have too much copper
Love that you got her back again!
Might as well use the good parts and make something fun.
I sold it and got the red car! But it did cross my mind.
I deleted mine and went though an east coast winter with zero issues.
I think I read it shouldn't freeze up until -30 degrees or so temps.
Mate that camshaft is Toast. Scrap it.
been running for 60k miles now... mate
I first thought about using diamond lapping compound but then I remembered about non - embedding lapping compounds . So I’m gunna find some of that instead & then put some on the cam bearing surfaces & lightly torque it down & begin to lap away the problem areas that are possibly causing the cam to bind .
I'd totally try it honestly. In hindsight I probably would have gone up to 5k grit
So are the two solenoid’s identical for the left and right side?
They look like it but are 2 different part numbers.
@@robinsontanner1234 do you know if these parts would work on a 2008 wrx
@codywilson504 i know I swapped an 09 wrx motor to an LGT and they worked. So I would assume so.
On my 2006 Renault Megane 1.5 DCI , POS, bought for peanuts 1 month ago with 299 000 kms, holed piston and all, the cam is so scored that the (upper, of course) aluminum cap is so worn, that it even has sharp edges protruding out to the sides, its aluminum has beed extruded, displaced to the sides; when i sand down and half-polish the cam journals it will become undersized; On top of that, the Alu. cap will have an oversized bore, so, i will mic. both cam and bore, and sand down the cap to around .001 to .002 clearance ; Won't be 100% round any more but i have done them like that for many years, works well
how much money
Millions
How many degrees did you have to adjust the exhaust gears or did you leave them at zero degrees?
I left them at zero. There was a thought of adjustable cam gears but ultimately i wasn't limited by timing.
@@robinsontanner1234 thank you
@@user-nk7yd3cd9c no problem! Anytime!
What's the upside to removing this? Not really sure why this would be something you'd want to delete.
Less failure points for coolant. Plus you dont really need your throttle body heated unless you are in sub zero temps.
I think my Spec C RA needs these replacing. I can here a very slight strange noise coming from the nearside and it's started to fluctuate boost. It used to be consistently 1.5 bar but it's now 1 to 1.5. No fault codes, but it looks like I'll be ordering a pair.
That could be it. maybe a seal has gone bad. Is there any shaft play in the turbo?
@@robinsontanner1234 I changed these last year but it made no difference.. there's no play in the Turbo shaft and it's not noisy when it's turned off as the impeller slows down. Compression and oil pressure are good, can't see any source of a boost leak, new plugs, coil packs, knock sensor, inlet pipe, exhaust and inlet manifold gaskets, maf sensor, tried dump valve, intercooler a d probably a load of other stuff. I was thinking it could be an AVCS pulley, but would that not flash up a fault code?
@crumpetcatcher i wonder if its a faulty boost controller. Can you monitor things on a Cobb or pc?
Doing like this for a while now. Didn't knew it was a think 😂. Done it many times as long as you keep it even and doesn't go beyond. Then it's good to go
watch out for toes
I got hungry til the end🤭🤭🤭
When I worked at this junk yard we made aluminum ingots or sows they were about 500 lbs. Each and we would fry stakes on them once in a while
Lol that is awsome. I think if i used 2 and a pan i could actually do it.
@@robinsontanner1234 we would use thinner stakes and wrap them in foil to cook them. It worked pretty good then after they were cooked we would take them out of the foil and throw them on there for a bit of a sear. We also had a slightly larger area to cook on lol
Nothing like some hot Ingot bacon 😅
Funny enough it didnt work very well. 😅
That’s so cool you melted down the copper pipes you stole!
Na. We get all the copper we do this with properly. No stealing here.
if you're in cold clmates it will help you get to operating temp. it will also help stabilize oil temp by passing excess heat on to the cooling system to dissipate through the radiator. its fine for a daily driver and there's no need to remove it. if you are building a track car, it dumps more heat into the oil than anything else. remove it and replace with a conventional oil cooler.
the theory also is it keep the throttle plate from freezing to the throttle body as it expands. But most even in artic temps have never seen this happen. It is 4 failure points to eliminate especially when running higher RPMS
that's what I thought I'm a scrapper I made a Ripper out of a PVC pipe and some razor blades and then you just pull it through by hand it was archaic but it worked
Yeah we did that for a bit. But comming up with pounds was taking too long lol
What the hell is it
Its a wire stripper.
Definitely not the proper way to polish any kind of cans of drinks you do it that way you're going to get them out of round
Sept they have like 50k on them since...
Hahaha this got me
Why do lava look like that
Right!? Everything just turns red when it melts! It has to do with the wavelength of the metal changing when it is heated to be that of red and orange.
Do these cuase to make some kinda knocking sound
No unfortunately 😪
What if the lobe is gouged?
If it gouged too far id not suggest this. This was very light. Caught my fingernail but not deep.
Not the proper way to polish cams or cranks, that will miss shape the cam. Must wrap sand paper all the way around, secure loosely with electrical tape then wrap a shoe lace around 2 or 3 times and pull back and forth, that way there is constant pressure all the way around the cam and it will stay round
Car has 50k on the motor since then bud.
So did changing the cam gears fix your issue?
No sadly. It was a few other things. Lol
hello, in my Subaru ej15, the inside of the solenoid socket is lubricated, I removed it, I cleaned it, I replaced the o-ring, I put it in, I felt that the driving comfort has increased. Is it repairable or should I replace it?
Its most likely a pretty cheap part. New parts are always good :)
Yes thank you. Good explanation. Very relevant for me. 35 psi 08 OBXT. Looking at buying these cams. You're the first I've seen to explain and show no lope.
Thanks man! AVCS pretty much prevents lope unless your tuner knows how to program it in at idle. Much bigger and you are looking at custom head work.
Awesome video bro, i replace it drove for a while check engine light didn’t come back, I thought i needed a hole new cam lol
Awsome man! So glad it helped!
Question for you, might not see this since I’m super late, would it be possible to just run the coolant from that extra nipple on the water pump to the block instead of plugging it?
If you had an opening/nipple to put a hose on then sure! In my case they were all taken up
@@robinsontanner1234 awesome, thank you!
So would a 2007 sti have 2 of these senors at the top
Yes!
nice way to help save some money. But, frankly, if I saw a cam with that kind of wear on a journal (much less a lobe) I would be replacing he camshaft and lifters. That is not meant to be offensive to say your approach is not viable. I just don't feel it is worth having an excessive clearance with a non-machined surface. My two cents...
the lifters in these motors have a cap over them. i would send it off for a regrind if the lobe was messed up. since these ride in an oil jacket as long as they are smooth and not gouging out the aluminum journal it sits in they are fine. But I completely understand what you are saying. Many other motor types I defiantly wouldn't suggest it. Motor has 45k on it making some descent power since this video ;D
Hello. Are you 100 percent sure that with error 0021 it's a solenoid? Jozef.
It can be other things like cam is off a gear, or a clogged avcs screen (only some models had them) cams that are out of tolerance, a faulty cam position sensor can also cause it. If your motor was just built there is a chance some RTV got into the channel along the front cam cap causing issues with oil flow.
can someone explain to me how to get my cams to chop at idle i installed these in my ej20x and it idles smooth as balls getting ready to rebuild a ex257 perhaps the cams will chop in that engine instead
You can tune it in or delete avcs. The AVCS adjust your cams so no chop.
@@robinsontanner1234 see i read that somewhere else and told my tuner about it and he has no idea how to make that happen we were both kinda bummed about it lol 😅 obviously keeping the avcs is the right thing to do cause I want driveability but man just want a bit more stop light presence ya know ?
@@Dylan-rf3fw he can retard timing at idle
@@robinsontanner1234 we will have to mess with it once the new engine is installed thanks :) 😀
If this is the car that was in that beginning drive it aounded awesome. I have a 05 outback xt and spun 2 bearings. So am in process of a rebuild. I finally got the new crank and bearings in and pistons. I live in nj and have cooler temps in the winter so wondering if this delete would b ok for me and if it would how did you do the coolant lines? Thanks bro love the video.
It should be fine in NJ. I know of people first hand that have deleted it in Alaska with no problems. Its sole purpose is to keep the throttle plate from freezing. The hard coolant line that goes to the heater core has 2 nipples. one line goes to the throttle body and one goes from the throttle body back to the pipe. It should be a black hard line. I just jumped from the first nipple to the return nipple with the piece of hose that is already there and clamp it up!
I just noticed i’m leaking from the driver side OCV. I don’t have any codes though, is that normal?
There is an o ring that can fail on the solenoid.
@@robinsontanner1234 I see mine is leaking but no codes or anything at the moment. it’s all caked up and i noticed a few drops after driving
@@__akuuma your car won't throw a code for an oil leak.
@@robinsontanner1234 that’s what i figured. just browsing through all the videos everyone’s got a code that helped them figure out the issue. just don’t wanna buy a part for no reason if that’s not the case haha
@@robinsontanner1234 quick question: would that be what’s dripped on my header on the driver side? every video i see people get to it from the top but looks like it would be easier to get from the bottom. really unsure if it’s even the right part
My driver's side cam gear won't line up/ is hitting something... What did I do wrong?
Your center isn't lined up and it's hitting Valves. You probably used the arrow on the crank sprocket for TDC and not the line on the crank sprocket
@@robinsontanner1234 so go around again with the crank pulley, I almost blew a gasket, thought I messed up bad! Thank you, going to try right now!
@@fishconsinlange8901 not around again just make sure the line is TDC. Not the arrow.
I see it now! Thanks, I was using a dimple/ dot, I see the line. Thank you,! Tomorrow it goes back together and hoping!
@@fishconsinlange8901 good deal! 👍 let me know if you have any questions!
I am lraning towards bc cam. Would you consider 280
You have to shave the heads most of the time to get a 280 to fit.
Was thinking about swing this on a 2005 dodge magnum 3.5 .... don't really see a need for ot
very informative
Amazing Info!
I have an '07 Outback XT which has a large metal bracket that is in the way of the variable valve control solenoid. There are two bolts that I have not found a way to remove them, and there are no videos showing this bracket. Any help would be wonderful.
are they the brackets of death that are around the fuel injector area?
@@robinsontanner1234 Yes!! 😠
They can be removed just have to be crafty and find all the bolts. Throw them in the trash lol.
@@robinsontanner1234 I'm working on it right now! Trash. Trash. I bought some swivel heads and a new mini ratchet. I really hope they help me get the job done
@@robinsontanner1234 Thanks for the encouragement.
What subie model NA long oil filter to order? Also water pump already has the tube deleted?
If you get a 2.5 NA ater pump it will have the tube deleted. It's the same filter used on the Crosstrek.
Cool build. How have these springs and valves worked out for you? Thanks
20K on the motor and they are doing great still
@@robinsontanner1234 cool, thanks
Do you drain the oil and coolant ?
You would have to drain both
I'd like to recommend better lighting and more close ups. I think the verbal description is very detailed, but before I tear down my engine, I want to be very confident that I'm taking the correct parts off and know how to re-assemble.
Great explanation ¡ One question: Both AVCS sensors are equal ? I mean, the same OEM part ? Or different ? Thanks ¡
@@ChetoCervantes i'm no expert, but I don't recall ordering a left bank and a right bank part. they're interchangebale, but I will not be offended if someone corrects me on that.
@@ecpoirier Thanks ¡
Another trick that is often used for polishing crankshaft journals is to wrap the sandpaper around entirely and use a shoelace wrapped a few times around it to move the sandpaper back and forth. This way you keep constant 360° pressure and dont create any out of round issues. Simple but I'm told it works well.
