Adult education: Overlooked and underfunded
Adult education classes offer a lifeline for Californians who want to get their high school diploma or GED, acquire training for a career, hone their English skills or study for their citizenship test.
These classes can dramatically improve the quality of life for adults - and their children. But funding for this work is precarious, and adult education is often one of the first areas targeted for cuts in tight budget times.
As the state struggles with tighter budgets, EdSource’s Emma Gallegos and Zaidee Stavely, in conversation with a panel of experts, discuss the unique potential of adult education and what lies ahead.

Washington State offers teaching bachelor’s degrees at community colleges. Why doesn’t California?
zhlédnutí 54Před 14 hodinami
Districts across California are struggling to hire teachers, but California doesn’t offer teacher preparation programs at community colleges, which is a barrier for those who live far away from four-year colleges. In contrast, Washington State is preparing hundreds of teachers with bachelor’s degrees at community colleges. What's the difference between these states and what can California learn...

How puppets can help kids learn to make believe

When teachers noticed that children in Oakland preschool and kindergarten classrooms were not engaging in imaginative play or interacting with each other as much after the pandemic, staff at Children's Fairyland, a local theme park, turned to an old favorite - puppets. Children and adults have been enthralled by Fairyland's handmade puppets and original puppet shows for decades. Now, they can t...

Fighting for fair school construction funding in California
zhlédnutí 90Před měsícem
Santa Rita Union School District, in Monterey County, is constantly patching up rotting floors and leaking roofs. Wealthier districts in the same county have state-of-the-art theaters, gymnasiums and science classrooms. That’s partly due to a decades-old method for funding school construction in California that many say has exacerbated inequalities. How did California's funding formula for scho...
What can colleges learn from the pro-Palestinian protesters’ deal at a UC campus?

University campuses have been roiled by turmoil over the latest war between Israel and Hamas. Pro-Palestinian protesters made little progress in finding common ground with administrators on many University of California campuses. Why California schools call the police

On any given day, thousands of calls go out from California schools to the police. But there isn't a lot of public data about why police are called to schools, or what they do when they get there. Staffing shortages undermine transitional kindergarten rollout

California lawmakers set the average class size for transitional kindergarten, a new grade for four-year-olds, at 24 kids, with 1 adult for every 12 students. It’s generally agreed upon in early education field that smaller class sizes and more adults make for higher quality preschool, with more one-on-one attention and better supervision. In many preschools licensed by the state, one adult is ...

Fewer than half of California students are reading by third grade. Even fewer Black and Latino students meet that standard. I like the part about students "self-selecting" to move themselves to a lower level course if they feel they need the review. A big part of the problem with remedial math (I taught it for ten years) is that you don't move forward in your degree unless you take that required course and get a passing grade in it. Making remedial classes optional and available as needed would be a big improvement. Let the students decide for themselves.

I used to live in lucerne for about 20 yrs or so since the 80's its grown alot and then again it hasnt grown at all .. there was a time when Nancy foot the real estate lady with one arm and the sheriff beto would rent peoples house out to a person they knew was on parole for meth related charges and after renting them the house the next day Sargent beto would cruz up and tell them they better be out by the morning when he came back or els he would find some meth there and back to prison they would go and he would tell them you dont get your deposit back and you dont get this months or thr rent they paid for two months in advance back if they didnt do what he said then he would make shure they whent back ti prison on a new meth case and that the state took there kids. The reson they did this was so they could tell the owners who lived some where else like LA or even oitta state that the renters where cooking meth and the house was considered condemned from the chemicals that where used to make meth and that it would have to be totaly tore down and rebuilt befor they coukd rent it out again so the owhers whould put the house up for sale after nancy foot sugested it would be the best thing and of course she would handle that for thf owner.but thr owners never cdme up there to look them selfs and take her word on it. Thats when beto and her put there money together and started buying up lucerne valley.

There are many challenges when preparing for TK specially now that schools are short staffed and are moving teachers without an Early Learning background to TK to fill the gap. Although doing an assessment is not a requirement yet, the CDE is looking into fully implement it by 2025. Many School Districts are already getting prepared once this is mandated by the state, so one resource they are exploring is Learning Genie for TK. This has a very complete and powerful way to assess and to compare the children's progress. Also we are using their TK curriculum, so it makes things much easier for us with their lessons and activities.
