This piece has a special place in my heart. My mother used to sing the chorus, "Dulce es la caña", to me as a lullaby -- an octave lower in the high phrases! I really appreciate hearing this very early recording -- less than 20 years after Fuentes composed the song. The chorus is rather dramatic, she almost does a Florence Foster-Jenkins on the high C; I am glad to hear it as Fuentes meant it, but I think I will stick with my mother's contralto version, which she learned from her father -- at any rate when I sing it as a lullaby to my grandchildren. 😉 Thank you for posting!

And he'd say, "Oo-la-la! wee-wee" She'd say, "Come see" and then roll her eyes" He'd answer, "Baby, you'd be surprised" Each evening they would promenade Upon ze boulevard, you see One day at lunch, she said, "Café voo la" He'd say, "My dear, don't forget where you are" Then she'd say, "Compronay voo, papa?" I was told this song was written by my father’s Uncle Johnny Byrne and sold for a case of beer!!?? 😮 The story is believable to me because of many reasons... I have a recording of my dad singing in the 1940’s and there was time left on the record and someone- “Uncle Johnny” - started singing “Jada”...I also have many letters that are very quirky like the lyrics of this song. The other quirky song he supposedly wrote and sold was “Tip Toe through the Tulips”. There may never be proof but in my heart this is true❤️ I have seen so many versions of both songs, I am in awe and so grateful. My family radiates artistic talent in music, art and acting.

My dad was born in 1917, and as a toddler used to go around singing this song’s chorus. His family started calling him Jada as a nickname. That became his nickname for his entire life. In 1969, our family started a girls camp and we started trying to think of a name, we decided on naming it Camp Jada for dad. My mother also decided to create a new explanation for the name JADAx3 (Jean and Dain and Jim and Dain and Janice and Daughters amore’). I always knew what the chorus was, but never knew there were stanzas also. It has been great hearing the whole song. Thank you so much.

Coon-Sanders (two men BTW) and The Night Hawks are arguably the best dance band to emerge from the period. I lived in Chicago for years and you could still see the Blackhawk - at 139 N. Wabash - where they performed. I spent quite some peering into the gloom - during a period of reconstruction - when you could see the original walls that they must have seen in the 20s - imagining them there. I am certain a molecule or two of them remained. At least a molecule or two...
