However, there are so many Kanji characters, and each Kanji character has multiple pronunciations so that it takes time to master. For beginner and intermediate level Japanese learners, mastering hiragana and learning pronunciation are the first priority.

      Thank you for your excellent question. In Japanese, it is the same translation. Change is translated Kaeru (verb) in Japanese, and spare is translated Kae(noun). They are actually the same word.🙂

      Thank you for your comments. I am Japanese and I learned Japanese as my first language by memorizing all the Kanji. For people who learn Japanese as a second language, Kanji is not the highest priority in my opinion. Proper pronunciation and vocabulary are the most important things.

    OK... question that is racking my brain on this one. What is the difference (in sound / pronunciation) between 八 and 蜂? Is it just context?

      I'm not native so I don't know about pronunciation, but I can confidently say that 八 is read "hachi" and means eight! I suppose the second kanji you wrote means bee and is also read as "hachi"

      Excellent question! They are the same in hiragana. However, the pronunciation is slightly different according to the dictionary. Though most Japanese including myself would not notice they are different. Number 8 is pronounced with a downward chi, and bee is pronounced with a flat chi.
