On Episode 29 co-hosts, Jeff and Sara, welcome Judith Scott to the show. Judith has been around the world watching whales and spends much of her year in Iceland with the killer whales of the North Atlantic. She gives an introduction to the killer whales they see regularly off of Iceland and shares some stories about those whales. These killer whales feed primarily on herring, but some of them will switch to prey on seals in the summer! The three chat about that and more. They also have her share some of her adventures in other parts of the world.

Episode 4 The Humpback Comeback in the Salish Sea video
Icelandic killer whales, similar to the Southern Residents in the Pacific Northwest, suffered greatly due to the captive industry. They were taken from Iceland and sold to marine parks in the U.S. Currently, there are two Icelandic killer whales that were captured from the wild and are still alive in the U.S. - Katina, the matriarch of Seaworld Orlando, and Ulises, who resides in Seaworld San Diego and holds the title of the oldest male killer whale in captivity.
I would love an episode focusing on T046B Raksha and her daughters.
Love your podcasts! We will be on the boat 5/8 - hope to see you!
I hope you consider inviting Jared Towers to share the captivating tale of the ongoing saga of T109A3A Brave Little Hunter.
Why didn't the beaked whale dive?
R.I.P Beaked Whale :(((
Great but you’re legally supposed to turn off your motor to prevent injury to the orca.
This is in Australia not the US and regulations are quite different. It also would be unsafe to do so in the open ocean conditions we were in. The company we were out with is extremely knowledgeable and respectful operating around these whales as they have been for over a decade.
The vessel was in neutral. Guidelines are different country to country and this was in Australia. It would have been unsafe to turn off the motors of this vessel in the open ocean conditions but with the boat in neutral the props were not spinning.
Corky took care of lots of whales whom mothers have passed on she raised them she's like a Godmother
I Really Love Corky she's the Sweetest Killer Whale ever and she gets bullied i don't like that
So, in Blackfish, they talked about a captive orca named Corky whom, back in the 80's/90's (I can't remember the year) was rammed by two other female orcas and she was rammed so hard, it broke her jaw and severed an artery in her head and she bled out and died. I don't think this is that same Corky that they're talking about, but it is confusing.
It is the same whale. Kandu V charged at Corky and broke her jaw when she did, severing her artery and ultimately dying. Corky did not get rammed, but was the intended target as I understand it.
If it is the same Corky then why are they saying that she should be retired to a sanctuary? If she did pass away, then they wouldn't be trying to retire her out of the park.
@@lucidhound4632 Kandu V was the whale that died in that incident. Not Corky.
Oh so it was a different whale. The way they say it in Blackfish makes it sound like Corky was the one that got rammed and died.
@@lucidhound4632 Sorry, my earliest reply wasn't very clear. 😅 Yes, the whale that died was the one that was trying to ram Corky.
folks need to show more caution letting orcas get close to their boats especially the rudder end. i guess orcas have been snapping off entire rudders & some times breakingna hole in the boat causing them to sink. fortunately theres been no attacks on humans during these sinking boats or in the wild.
That is only off the Iberian Peninsula in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Nowhere near these whales and not the same population.
@@Hysazu ok
The rarity of the beaked whales makes a hunt like this especially sad to watch, once Orcas target you, you're pretty much done
I thought beaked whales were "of least concern" on the endangered species list?
Can a two-year-old killer whale survive on its own?
You started the episode with a bang. I love humpback whales. ❤
Yahoo. really unreal ~ have a nice day. 🤚
So Beautiful💖
Corky is the sweetest and most patient orca in captivity imo. I've only read two incidents where she hurt a trainer but by accident, not intentional or severely. Such a gorgeous girl
Do the beaked whales ever escape? I know they can dive deeper than the Orcas but it seems like they are forced to stay on the surface because they need to re-oxygenate their blood? That's when the Orcas get them yes?
I'm just guessing, but I'm assuming that whale species that are being hunted instinctively want to make sure they can go up for air when fleeing. Orcas often kill by drowning whales by swimming on top of them to push them down. If the Beaked Whale dives down and wants to come back up, and the orca's are still there, it's probably game over?
Was this intended for the deaf
💕Wow🧡💜💜🧡💜💜💜
I adore the A23s. Ripple, Fife, Midsummer, Fern, Eliot, and Ne'nakw hold a special place in my heart. Corky should be with them. 😔
It´s so fascinanting how orcas hunt.... It's not just about killing and eating. There's something else to it, for sure.
Watching this whilst thinking also about how ancient seafarers would see these pods and races with their prey. Not being able to explain what they have seen for the very first time. To see the waves and the surfacing and then the brief view of the beaked whale with a large spike at the end of its face, it’s surreal. To know now as modern history has studied and we can explain the view, but to be in absolute fear of the deep oceans. It’s the underworld and it chills me to the bone. No sense of direction or light. The video was beautiful but the haunting under tones is inescapable.
Corky is a Northern Resident from the A5 pod, A23 matriline. She has been in captivity since 1969. She has family in the wild - sister Ripple, brother Fife, niece Midsummer, great-nephews Fern and Ne'nakw, and great-niece Eliot. Corky lives in Seaworld San Diego.
I've never heard that kind of whale (beaked whale) before °○)))
Galiano ❤
Note the breathing cycles between the Orca and the Beaked whale, one whole second longer breaths for the Orca, hence their ability to chase their prey to exhaustion. Their large round pectoral fins allow the effortless higher lifts out of the water for more endurance enabling oxygen uptake. 🐬
I love orca
❤❤❤❤❤
What happened to the beaked whale?
Beaked whales dive a lot deeper than orcas can, it probably just dove down to where the orcas couldn’t follow
@@genXdoom72That is not the case after a long dive or for a weakened individual that needs the longer recovery time to absorb the needed oxygen in their blood that enable these long dives.
...they killed it...czcams.com/video/bfu5z8pXbHw/video.html
I have a feeling the beaked whale got et.

Remember to record the audio next time 😊
We did record audio. A bunch of ear-splitting wind noise. We opted for silence instead of music.
Just like wolves on an elk. Great footage.
The clarity of the video was excellent. Now if only there was audio to accompany it. Dead Air sucks.
It was a bunch of ear-splitting wind noise and we get the same feedback when we put music to the videos so we went with nothing this time. We'll take that into consideration for next time.
I could hear everything perfectly!
For Orcas, if it swims, it's on the menu!
Thanks for sharing!
