EMPTY COAL, HEAVY MANIFEST & a PASSENGER TRAIN work their way over DONNER PASS 2024
More action from the Donner trip!
First up an Empty Coal train charges up the grade, thru Magra, CA MP148. This was pretty nice to see, since it's not one of the daily trains, that run every day. I got some cool close up shots of this one, flying low and a nice chase at the end!
Next up, I'm on top of that hill, getting a nice overhead shot of what looks like the MRVNP "North Platte" climbing Eastbound. This was a cool train to watch roll by!
And lastly Amtrak 5, the westbound California Zephyr thru Casa Loma, CA sounding great with the horn echoing thru the mountains!
And an outro shot showing a Panorama view of the area!

Lot of action with this MRVNP here at the beginning! Seen here climbing Donner Pass thru Casa Loma, CA along the edge of the cliff! I recorded Radio audio from earlier when this train was having engine problems and included it here in the beginning of the video, that was pretty cool. Pretty cool day in San Timoteo Canyon! This is the first time for me, catching two back to back "Heritage Units" First up a Z Train runs East up the hill, thru El Casco. Just how long is this one train? Also, what is the grade percentage in an area like that? Once just for the fun of it, the wife and I rode Amtrack from Fort Lauderdale, Fl. to Tampa, Fl. and back. It was a cool ride. It ran at 82 mph in open countryside.
The grade here is around 2.2%, it does vary. And I would guess the first train is around 7,000'. Thanks for watching!đ

Its so crazy to see how physically long the trains are besides just numbers on paperwork. We only get small glances of the rear or middle in some spots but your videos really show the size

Great video. Thanks from an "Original Transcon UP/CPRR" enthusiast. A photo from A.J. Russell, fall of 1869 when he took a trip to Sacramento after completion of the RR, was shot from atop the Summit Tunnel, faced east, with Donner Lake 2000 Ft. below. We can walk there where he took his Imperial camera shot. The cover over the original vertical work can be seen from the top, also. Russell's photos can be viewed on OMCA site, once one navigates past their introduction, đ. The CPRR Museum site has many photos by Alfred Hart of this area, when under construction. PS: Russell's photo is incorrectly identified as "A.J. Russell 1868"...off by a year. Thanks from Darrell. PSS: Subscribed.

Excellent, thank you for another great video. I was an Engineer/Conductor here back in the days of SP. The Horseshoe Curve shown at 6:50 is also known as "Stanford Curve" and Stanford Flats just EB of this. I once asked my friend Jim "The Bear" Mahon what was his favorite part of "The Hill", and this was it. Keep 'em coming!

@@RRTrainVideos Yes it was a great company to work for. When I was there we still used the old #1 main "which is now abandoned" and mainly used SD40T-2/SD45T-2 "tunnel motors" as power with manned helpers usually between Roseville and Sparks. I worked snow service in the winter, pretty much the same equipment UP uses there now (flanger, spreader and rotary).

@CalebA-sv2kw Thanks, Caleb! đ Yea, big foot was hiding out still, haha! It was my first time up there, but as I understood it, they abandoned the old right of way for a more direct route thru the mountain via a tunnel that's something like 2 miles long that crews call the "big hole"

great stuff yea, the men that built the transcontinental were actual men. Didn't have 'fluid gender' 'transmutes' etc. The stuff the academics, politicians shove at us 24/7. the only thing working out in the 'trans' world is transFemales i.e. males pretending to be females and going into boxing where they can beat up women.

Oh man you got me again on the WB in the first scene! Im the one telling the North Platte thst their rear dup is all black on the radio. It is so cool to see your videos of it. Those small WB manifests are the SPRV, Sparks to Roseville manifest. They are essentially a helper engine power move back to Roseville to push another train back up that has some cars that need to go to Roseville as well. It is very common to have a lot of power and trains basically the same size
