Reading 1: Jer 31:31-34
Resp: Ps 51:12-13, 14-15, 18-19
Gospel: Matthew 16:13-23
Memorial of Saint Dominic, priest
Lectionary: 410

Reading 1: Jer 31:31-34
The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will form a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not according to the covenant which I made with their fathers, in the day when I took them by the hand, so as to lead them away from the land of Egypt, the covenant which they nullified, though I was the ruler over them, says the Lord. But this will be the covenant that I will form with the house of Israel, after those days, says the Lord: I will give my law to their innermost being, and I will write it upon their heart. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they will no longer teach, a man his neighbor, and a man his brother, saying: ‘Know the Lord.’ For all will know me, from the littlest of them even to the greatest, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will no longer remember their sin.
Responsorial Psalm: Ps 51:12-13, 14-15, 18-19
R. (12a) Create a clean heart in me, O God.
Create a clean heart in me, O God: and renew a right spirit within my bowels. Cast me not away from your face; and take not your holy spirit from me.
R. Create a clean heart in me, O God.
Restore unto me the joy of your salvation, and strengthen me with a perfect spirit. I will teach the unjust your ways: and the wicked shall be converted to you.
R. Create a clean heart in me, O God.
For if you had desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: with burnt offerings you will not be delighted. A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: a contrite and humbled heart, O God, you will not despise.
R. Create a clean heart in me, O God.
Alleluia: Mt 16:18
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel: Matthew 16:13-23
Then Jesus went into parts of Caesarea Philippi. And he questioned his disciples, saying, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and still others say Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” Jesus said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter responded by saying, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And in response, Jesus said to him: “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood have not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I say to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven. And whatever you release on earth shall be released in heaven.” Then he instructed his disciples that they should tell no one that he is Jesus the Christ.
From that time, Jesus began to reveal to his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and to suffer much from the elders, the scribes, and the leaders of the priests, and to be killed, and to rise again on the third day. And Peter, taking him aside, began to rebuke him, saying, “Lord, may it be far from you; this shall not happen to you.” And turning away, Jesus said to Peter: “Get behind me, Satan; you are an obstacle to me. For you are not behaving according to what is of God, but according to what is of men.”

A great reflection of patience and expectations from our prayers! Maybe it is something to do with my age, 78, but throughout my younger self I had not learned "the patience of Job" in my life. When we are younger, and seemingly with our whole lives ahead of us, we are impatient for our desires to happen. We want everything right now! Reflecting back, I believe that most of the things I wished to happen were purely selfish in nature. This is something pretty common because most of us when we are younger have never learned the value of spiritual awareness. Our early glimpses of spiritual awareness come to us because we are faced with some life altering event that has no substance to our carnal life, but to that life that has been formed by association as we grew older, such as loss of a loved one. The road to faith is paved with as many positive influences as it is with negative. I, earlier mentioned the patience of Job. How difficult it is to look adversity in the eye and keep your faith steadfast in God! Job 2:10, "Shall we indeed accept good from God and not also accept adversity and disaster?" Through all of his suffering, Job held steadfast to his faith. In this way our faith will direct us to the will of God and not to our own selfish desires. While our understanding of Job's adversity is plainly explained in the Bible, imagine if you will, how unappreciated Job must have felt, having given his life to God! Just as this woman sought out Jesus to perform a miracle for her, it was done by FAITH, nothing more nothing less! She was given the same kind of hope that Job clung too. Both were humble and both believed through their faith in God's ability to bring them results! No matter how much pressure the devil puts on us, we have God's word that he has been defeated. I believe that God never leaves a prayer un answered. We must just remember that they are answered in God's Devine time. We are His children and as such a are to be patient and dedicated to his service.🙏💖🕊🕊🕊
Amen 🙏🕊
