Remember when we were happy with tyres and tubes? Rims were double eyeletted and lasted a long time. Bikes were simpler, less expensive and more durable. I've tried tubeless but for me a single speed MTB should be as simple as possible. It's about the ride, not the technology. Each to their own.
Sounds like a cool company. Are you over the berd spokes?
Definitely not!! Stayed tuned and I will be updating everyone about my new Berd Spoke wheels soon!
Cool. Im Still thinking about berd spokes. Feels like they compliment a hardtail!
Hookless are for suckers.
What do you think of the updated model that has a 1° steeper sta? I just ordered the '24 model & eager to see how it compares to my previous steel hardtail, the Sherpa. May hit Cherry Canyon first. I plan to go 130mm fork If I plan to run 2.6 & geared as short as it can fit, do you think the FAN dropout option is worth it?
I think the geo is based on a 120mm fork so running a 130 will slack it out slightly. I personally don’t think a Hardtail requires a real steep STA. I know Steve at Hardtail Party is all about the steeper STA but he’s also trying to clean steep chunky climbs in AZ so maybe for that reason it’s better. Personally I think you can figure out how to maneuver your hardtail and micro adjust your saddle position and your cleats/foot position. Cherry Canyon is a fun trail and I have rode my Japhy there many times.
@@hardmtnbiker Esker says 130mm is the max & it's all I have. Yeah, I've done cherry Canyon on my Stanton a few times. That bike had the same 75° sta as the earlier Japhy's & that climbed well, but I was told the Esker climbs even better as it gets over ~15%. I think the frame is about 1/4th of a lbs lighter. An unnoticeable win. lol
@@Alex_564 I’m sure you will get a slight climbing advantage of the STA changes, but perhaps not noticeable. It’s funny that you are mentioning the Sherpa since that Stanton is the frame I was considering or the new Ti Hayduke. I don’t need another frame but I could build something up with my parts bin and I personally only really want hardtail’s now.
@@hardmtnbiker I had the Sherpa & it's great bike. Would have gotten another one, but reach got like 27mm longer, which is longer than I wanted. That & since riding my friends Hayduke a few years ago I got curious about the Japhy. A bit slacker & longer should make downhills a bit more stable.
Got to love hikers that own the entire trail
Cool, when I saw the title I thought it's the quitting video, thanksfully it's not. Lots of ytber quit these 2 yrs.
Thanks, I enjoy making CZcams videos and it’s a great way to save moments
Lowering your seat post will not simulate shorter crank arms. There are a few other excellent videos on the benefits of shorter crank arms. I recommend to see more than one video and make up your own mind. A game changer for me and many smaller people. there are many more affordable shorter options now.
Thanks for your insight. In general, I think shorter cranks are beneficial for shorter riders. So are shorter stems, more narrow handle bars and smaller wheels. But I really don’t see any cyclist buying bikes bicycles that are specifically designed for shorter riders. Personally I have been riding for over 20 years and never felt my 175mm cranks caused me to over flex my knees or cause me any discomfort. I eventually went to 170mm and perhaps I will go with 165mm but going to 155 seems like it’s too short for efficient long distance rides and the guys who go this short that I know are just doing short distance mountain bike rides so they don’t need that additional leverage for pacing.
what chain are you using?
KMC K1SL
Have you thought about a jump seat dropper? I.e seat lever actuated dropper.
I put the Fox Transfer dropper on that Japhy. That seat post was just for display purposes
Where is this trail dude? Looks like SoCal
Exactly right! This is Brown Mountain the San Gabriel Mountain range north of Pasadena California.
Hard to say how steep it is. I would not be that fast, even at day light. Maybe after a few month of daily use. So, you like to sweat? I live since more than 10 years at the Persian Gulf. Nice here, 365 days summer in a year. 45 to 50 degree celcius in summer. 80% to 90% humidity for some months. You can here faster sweat than you can drink.
Once you get used to it, it seems a lot easier. Personally I don’t like real fast open trail steep descents because those crashes really hurt.
the gym is small and they charge 500pesos PER DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fuck that!
They didn’t charge me when I stayed there, perhaps it’s changed. I also found another gym next to the Astoria hotel that had a lot more equipment and wasn’t too expensive. The gym at Quest Hotel in Clark AF is really nice too, they don’t charge, maybe now they do
I used to ride a SS exclusively for 10 years. It was fun when I was younger but these old legs can’t take it anymore. 😂
I know what you mean but I don’t want to stop SS mountain biking, I may not be able to restart lol.
@@hardmtnbiker I still have a SS, but I just can't do the 12-14 percent monumental climbs anymore. They're just soul-crushing. lol
@@drbyers I get it! As long as you are riding and enjoying the awesome outdoors on your bikes !
Looks to me Black diamond/ Extreme Blue ! 🤔
That’s a good way to put it “Extreme blue!”
I have the same red Hayduke. I love it.
Perfect Geo for where I mostly ride. My paint is pretty scratched up now but Esker has nice color ways. This red color is one of my favorites.
@@hardmtnbiker my paint still looks new minus some small nicks around the dropout corners. I’ll probably keep the bike forever.
Riding at night has such a different feeling to it, kind of hard to judge the difficulty of the trail but it looks like a pretty good one, perhaps blue square difficulty? There weren't too many obstacles from what I could tell. Looked like a fun ride nonetheless!
Looks good 👍🏽
You really make me want to get my singlespeed rolling again. I miss the simplicity.
I really like simplicity of SS and hardtails! Thank you for watching
Don’t get me wrong I love my hardtail but the full squish just makes it more bare able fun on roudy descents. I like to ride blacks and double blacks, more manageable on squish bike
I completely agree! Riding fast and furious down really chunky trails is better on a full suspension. I know that I don’t ride the fastest on my hardtails down El Prieto, it’s Advanced rated.(Black maybe Double Black, not sure, it’s an average -8% descent with lots of tight exposed switchbacks) but per Strava I ride the fastest of the day sometimes and top 50 for this year(top 11%)and ALL Time I’m top 4% #346. Not too bad for an old man on a hardtail. Take a look at the El Prieto videos, I have plenty of them. I love that trail!
@@hardmtnbiker I’ve ridden that trail, super fun! I had to slow down for hikers unfortunately
@@50whatnomadtravelnursemtb5 yep it’s a popular trail. To ride it without a lot of traffic you need to go weekdays or at night. But I have been on of some of my fastest runs and had to stop for a bunch of hikers or newbie bikers in the way.
Thanks for sharing your awesome evening ride! You are blessed to have such a great place to ride, and I love that your share these moments with us!
Thanks for watching! I appreciate your comments
Do they use the standered shimano hose or a hope hose?
Shimano hydraulic hoses
Never tried a full suspension before and that's fine by me. I can't afford the luxury and I've survived more than I thought I could with my HT. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Always good to know that the basics can be appreciated.
I’m not interested in buying anything but hardtail’s and gravel bikes. I think if I bought a full suspension I would probably feel like I was not getting enough excitement from my trails.
F the bell 🛎️
A little late to the party but the light and supple ones will shred side casing on rocks. Be warned. Love the tres tho.
Agreed and yes I have cut the sidewalls on rocks on more than one occasion.
Simplicity, ease of maintenance/cleaning & an all around different feel/ride is what I get from my Kona Unit compared to my full squish Giant Anthem. I Love both bikes for different reasons
It’s nice to have options
Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts and speaking from the heart.🙏
I never got the surgery. But I was able to stay fit. I’ll update soon
Like you I am a nurse. I tore the long head of my biceps during my military test. The test used to be fun, but I am now in my 50s and it seems that I get injured easier. I am also not sure if I want to have the surgery.
@@senseinammartialarts just get a surgery consultation soon. Once the muscle recoils, it only has a short window to get stretched out and inserted into the bone 🍖
30-40mm of suspension will make a HUGE difference. If you test ride a bike, any bike with that much front suspension you'll see that you have more comfort and FAR greater control on any challenging descents!
Perhaps I will try one. I have also thought about just getting a 100mm travel fork and setting up that in-between XC and Adventure gravel. I think Surly has a model like this already
I very much agree with your attitude. thanks
I just went from 2.25 aspens to 2.4 aspens on my Niner air 9 SS. Way more fun! Seems faster overall. Able to put down power up rooty climbs and trails. Holds momentum. I’d go bigger if it had room.
The advantages of wider tires are finally being understood. I haven’t tried the Maxxis Aspens but it looks like a great tread design.
By chance was that Clermont?
wait, are you saying that you carry a whole bottle of sealant on every ride?
A 2 or 3ml bottle
I know the purpose of the bell and that's a good idea to be honest with you but it is hard to hear you a little bit I love your videos just some words of advice
I will make some videos soon w/o the bell. Now that I'm riding during the weekdays, I don't need to worry about hikers as much. Thanks for watching
I feel way more connected to the trail or the pavement road whatever I'm riding on on a hardtail on a full suspension you feel like you're just riding on air now maybe when I make a professional mountain bike team I'll ride full suspension but I always ride a hardtail right now I'm writing a trek Roscoe 8 I got for 600 bucks and didn't have to do nothing to it my buddy 20 plus years bike mechanic experience went with me
That Trek Roscoe is a great hardtail. Perfect geo and it fits bigger tires
This needs to be way more liked and viewed such an underrated video this takes balls man to do especially on a CZcams platform but I'm the same way do I have bad ADHD and sometimes I miss read things and I jump to conclusions a lot but I try not to nowadays in my older days I'm 39 I know I'm not stinking old😂😂😂😂 but we do live in a super easily offended world where people just get offended for no reason😂😂😂😂
Is there an upcharge to have RD and Hydro cables internally routed on XX frameset?
Single speeds are the biggest flex right now tbh
What a place to ride! Nice view at the top. 32x16 on my 650b hardtail but in fairness I use it on rolling terrain with no huge climbs. As others have said riding single speed is tough enough, you gear as you need to and enjoy the simplicity. I use old mechs as tensioners in a standard frame and its pretty bullet proof.
Don't believe the hype AMEN BTW what an awesome trail
Boost spacing was introduced (in conjunction with the increase in popularity of 1x drivetrains) to give more room for 12 speed cassettes at the rear, and more room at the front for larger diameter stanchion forks. Although 3-4mm extra flange width might not sound much, it also helps to increase triangulation with the increase in popularity of 29" rims on MTBs.
I agree that increasing flange width, and axle width is an improvement. Unfortunately some hubs are really not that much different from the standard 142 and that is why if you’re really intending to increase the wheel strength and drop out stiffness you might as well go 157 Super Boost. I just think that switching to Boost 148 was reckless and aimed directly at changing standards to make more profits
@@hardmtnbiker yes, I agree Super Boost would offer the strongest wheel build - however, I suspect that isn't really necessary for most MTB riders (other than DH and Enduro) and would add weight - plus an increase in Q factor to keep the chain-line correct?
@@jmo2752 agreed that structural improvements would be only necessary on longer travel Enduro/DH rigs. I just hate the idea of changing standards at the cost of our environment. Boost 148 is now being implemented on gravel bikes. What next will they do a 110x12 fork too, and why didn’t they just keep the 100x15 on gravel forks? To prevent you from using your standard XC rigid and short travel forks?
Run 32-19 on my rigid Kona unit , keep up the good work Doug ,enjoy watching your content😊
R4L, I've been very happy with the Drako, but I've recently developed a very annoying squeaking/creaking sound that eminates from where the red lug sole rests against my XTR SPD pedal. Have you experienced anything similar and can you recommend a solution or an alternative pedal? Thx.
I use Shimano SPD pedals and never had issues. I prefer my XT and XTR Trail pedals and the only other ones I’ve used are my Garmin Rally XC power meter pedals and those are fine too.
The things that you are saying make. a lot of sense.
Love my SS 853 steel spot rocker! Mine is with a carbon belt drive.
Hold on to that, those older 853 Reynolds steel frames were the best IMHO.
You own an 853 steel frame? It is very supple and takes out trail chatter very well. Not selling it. I love it so much I own two steel spot rockers.
SS is tough enough period, nobody should be gear shaming or flexing lol. A Neuhaus would be sweet but ti is nice ..
What a awesome video! You told me a while back just run what you like. People were telling me my 32x22 was a whimp gear but works great on my trails! Not hard not easy and NO tensioner on my 22 Fuse . Keep these down to earth vids coming! You rock dude!! 👍🏻
That Fuse is a nice frame! So cool that it fits that gear perfectly. Personally I would do the same thing. Even if it means getting a half link chain to avoid a tensioner.
@@hardmtnbiker Same here. Not a fan of the tensioner!! 🤮Like running my wheel in the shortest position!
You are spot on about the not shaming others out of trying or sticking with SSing! I am from Eastern Ohio, and I just rode my first real 9-mile SS ride today at 48 years old on my new 2024 Esker Japhy! I have been kicking the idea around for a few years, and when I found your channel, you inspired me to move ahead with my plan! So, thank you for your inspiration and taking time to share your thoughts and rides!
You made my day!! Thanks for sharing your experience. That new Japhy is so beautiful and they dialed in the geo more plus added width for wider tires. What fork are you running? 120mm or 130mm
@@hardmtnbiker Haha, it is pretty sweet bike! I am only a little disappointed based only on the color. As for the fork, I am currently returning to my early days of riding and went fully ridgid with a carbon fork.
@@ericdavidson5011 Carbon or metal rigid forks are great. You definitely need to be more precise with picking lines but I think they make you a better rider.
@hardmtnbiker I would agree about being more precise with your line. However, I think a ridged fork is inherently more accurate by default, meaning I get way better feedback.
Good place to go jogging
lol
Do your RX4 and Hope rotors make alot of noise when braking?
They don’t now,but they didn’t like the Shimano or Hayes rotors and the front would squeal badly. Now,only use Hope rotors and they are fine.
@@hardmtnbiker Squealing noise is likely contamination or when wet. I'm wondering about a consent tweeting and chirping noise when braking.
@@zap... I don’t get that with mine
@@hardmtnbiker any special tips on setting them up? I've tried everything and they squeak and chirp constantly.
@@zap... #1 are you uses Hope rotors? 2. The regular set up process with new pads, lightly sanded and matched to the rotors with 10 slow speed complete stops
Was thinking of trying 700x50's on my cyclocross bike, but in light of your comments on change of height and toe interference, will stay with my 700x42's. Your bike does look nice with those tires.
Happy birthday. Congrats on a meaningful career. I see a titanium esker win your future.
That seems like the direction I will go. I really like that brand and the geometry is spot on.
