Wow. Bowie in a warzone. I think he would have been very touched by this.

Your intro music is a big bunch of far too loud sweaty arse. Downvote incoming, enjoy.

One more comment, as I continue watching this: The point of "China Girl" was *precisely* that the Chinese woman in the video is depicted as stereotypical, and the role that Bowie portrays in the video, too, as the privileged/rich white man (with blond hair and blue eyes...) is a sort of caricature (it certainly is not "David Jones"!)... "It's in the whites of my eyes" is right there in the lyrics! "You shouldn't mess with me / I'll ruin everything you are." (Aryan) eyes of blue and television, etc. Bowie married a Somalian woman. He spoke out for black artist's rights on MTV. The "Loving the Alien" video almost repeats the same pattern in the scenes with the "Rich White Man" and the "Middle Eastern Woman" who, at one point, ends up throwing the dollar bills stuck to her clothing at him and storms off. So, yes... Students often miss the point, but I also did have a few who wrote essays on the "China Girl" video and completely "got it" as well. (Edit: The "Let's Dance" video, from the same year as "China Girl," also deals with white privilege, racism, and capitalism, among other things.)

Hi, John. Yes... The videos ARE important for sure in Bowie's case. When I was teaching my university course on Bowie, I gave students a choice between doing a "lyrics" analysis and/or a "music video" analysis (in relation to the lyrics of their chosen song, obviously) for their second shorter essay assignment. If you look at, for instance, the videos from the '80s, there's a lot of political "commentary" in there, despite the more popular "pop" sound of his music as compared to what came before it ("Let's Dance" isn't just a song about dancing in red shoes, right?!). I think one could write a chapter in a book, if not an entire book, on the "Blackstar" video itself. Very interesting approach Prof. Perrott has taken. Thanks for this.
