First, an explanation of the video:
Matteo came from a very religious household. His grandparents were also very controlling, meaning they told him what to wear, how to act, who to date, and who to be friends with. Over time, Matteo started having a thing for Bennet (in university, around 1990). His parents didnât mind, but because his grandparents held most of the control he would get yelled at and hurt by his grandparents sometimes, there were times his dad would defend him and always tried to. But, Matteo being heavily religious himself was told his whole life that âliking someone of the same gender is wrong in Godâs eyesâ and he didnât want to disobey God. Some of you might think thatâs dumb and he could just leave the religion, but that isnât easy for everyone and some people are very connected to their religion, Matteo was and still is. Over time, Matteo started to have severe depression and anxiety, he doubted himself and his judgement a lot, it eventually became so overwhelming that he tried to off himself. The reason Mat is covering Bennetâs mouth when he tried to kiss him is because Matteo tried to avoid romance with Bennet despite very much wanting it.
This is only a summary, this doesnât even go into his experience in conversion churches, Iâve heavily researched all of this stuff, psychological and emotional effects of all these things, but this is a brief breakdown.
Btw, this is not meant to attack any religions. I myself am religious somewhat, I believe in God. Everyone has a different experience with religion, and none of this is meant to degrade anyone. Some people do experience trauma through religion, it is called religious trauma, and this is a fictional characters story based on the true stories of many. Everyone is loved, everyone is accepted on my channel.
