1995-96 Topps Basketball Cards and Inserts
Finally, Topps got into inserts. I remember putting together these retail inserts well, but that meant that half of the inserts I never pursued until this project. Just one of the perks of doing all of this.

Basketball has to be the place where the best variety of cool card designs could be found in 1994. The uniqueness of Embossed and Emotion is such a great pair of awesome design choices that makes this sport stand out from the rest.

Personally I missed this set by 1 year, so they seemed like clunky old cards to me. I can now better appreciate them, but the innovative nature of the set was so strong that I always knew this stuff to be standard with cards.

    I agree with two of your top three. The Upper Decks are my favorite overall card designs of 1992, and probably my favorite UD cards ever. The Fleer cards from 1992 are probably my favorite Fleer designs ever, so I'd put them at number two. But the SkyBox cards were a disappointment to me as a kid. I LOVED both the 1990 and 1991 SkyBox sets, these just weren't as exciting to me.

    • @sportscardprofessor
      @sportscardprofessor Před 4 dny

      I get that, SkyBox was a big shift from the first two years. 1991 had kind of softened my enthusiasm so by 1992 I was not really in the same frame of mind, they needed to pivot and this was an interesting approach.

I don't buy junk wax era cards to resell them to someone else, I collect them because it's what I had as a kid and I actually want to own it. Love that you focus on the actual card designs themselves instead of obsessing over the value. Anyway, would love to see one of these for the 1991 SkyBox cards!

  • @DeadDecks
    @DeadDecks Před 4 dny

    We really like these cards. Some information for you. The gold cards are inserted 1:72 packs for boosters (2 boxes) and 1:32 starters (4 boxes). The rares are cheap because the base set was over printed like much of the sports card/CCG market at the time. Boxes are still cheap for both. Starter only gold cards are much harder to find than the booster (likely because they were exclusive, tougher pull rate and likely lower print run). The expansion (1996-97) are red bordered (orange if you prefer) and only come in a 7 card hanger pack (as far as we can tell) bundled with a base booster pack. The expansion had a 110 card set with 10 gold ultra-rares inserted at 1:24 packs. Bulk and rares are quite a bit harder to find than the base set while gold cards are much more prevalent and cheaper.

    Apologies for a comment unrelated to the video at hand, which I do intend to watch. But I wasnt sure what the best way was to send a comment that would be seen. Since I really enjoy your history and info provided on videos for certain products, it would be interesting to see a video covering the history of Topps Baseball Coins (and other milk cap toppers or similar items). The little bit of info I could find talked about there being sets in 1964 and 1971, some of which my Father has, and then there's the 4 sets that came out from 1987 to 1990. It appears the special holder they made came out in 88 but nothing for the smaller 87 set, then they released full factory sets already in the holders, defeating the purpose and fun of collecting a set by hand. I wonder what made them decide to make, and then stop, and then make again, and then stop...

    • @sportscardprofessor
      @sportscardprofessor Před 9 dny

      That's pretty much right. Topps kept trying different inserts throughout the 1960s and early '70s to spice up the collectability for ever changing young collectors. In the late 1980s they were trying to diversify what crazy stuff kids would collect including Triple Header baseballs, Doubleheaders, and candy-filled Topps Stand-ups. Bringing back the coin idea was a nostalgia cash-grab. The 1990 coins were available in packs or comp[ete set form. I will get around to both coins and milk caps at some point but I'm still working on putting together the whole picture. Thanks for the request.
