Leuven, Mechelen enz.. Belgie heeft veel mooie steden.

i visited Mechelen in mid-January 2022, so just roughly 2 years ago. It was quite a fine town. It was super interesting. I was with a group of some others and we went the same way as you, but walked into the park (twice actually) and on the water.

Why Tyne Cot? Because the German pillbox at the top of the hill was captured by the Northumberland Fusiliers and it reminded them of the Tyne valley cottages in Northumberland. Which is under the memorial.

To think that when i was growing up, pretty much every single space shown in this video was a car infested mess or car parking lot. Mechelen has dramatically changed in the past 30y, mostly by getting rid of cars in the city center, redesigning all the public spaces as public spaces instead of parking lots, and giving the space back to people. And they're not done yet. Since this video was made, the big road leading to the train station at 1:15 was reduced to two lanes for cars with wide cycling paths on either side, moving the narrow cycling path to the other side of the parked cars and doubling the width of the sidewalk. The 4 lane ring road at 3:20 had one direction removed completely turning it onto a 2-lane one way road, a bus lane and again a bunch of bicycle lanes, reducing crossing distance for pedestrians from 3 crossings to just one. And much more is being done all over the city. I moved to Gent as a student and stayed because it was such a beautiful, car resistant, and bike and pedestrian friendly city back then compared to other cities in Belgium. But IMHO, in the last 10 years Mechelen has become prettier and more bike and pedestrian friendly than even Gent. What the city of Mechelen has done in the past 20 years is nothing short of a complete transformation... Goes to show any city can mostly get rid of cars and make it safe for everyone if there is the political will to do so.
