Rubberbanding - if you're skilled, you get punished - if you're trash, you get rewarded. That's why kids overpraised these games. Bet those "clutch wins" they had gave them dopamine rushes to vote them 10/10. Juiced 1 is a far better racing game, and they have nothing to hide - they even let you spectate the AI in a replay after a race, if you think they did something shady.

I actually really kind of hate this feature but I'm used to the race having indicators, I don't want all out walls because open world is awesome but simple flares, cones or glowing arrows during the race helps out a lot, if not at least have it inputted on the GPS which is probably actually the most efficient way they should have done this. All they would have needed was an overlaid line on during each race queued up with the start and finish line badge. I think you might be right though there is a added complexity to it. I just tried it out it's cool but this is definitely created an extra skill gap, an extra skill on top of racing needed to navigate each course, when you're flying down the road in a decked out Lambo it's kind of hard to navigate. I think I'll play the main game & unlock stuff at some point rather than just playing a fully unlocked setup.
I think the main approach with this design choice is where you get rewarded for the longer you play the game, as you start getting familiarized with the map. I loosely recall the game alluding to this as well when it was explaining license levels to you.

For those who don't know, AI rubberbanding generally happens when you crash into walls. This seemingly was coded into the game to counter wall riding, but it appears that it has some unwanted consequences.
I don't know why the redux team tend to make their mods so obscure and yellowish, it's like they try to mimic the piss filter so bad.

0:12 and 0:28 it doesn't surprise me that it's the grey car that was Rubberbanding. Back in those days there seemed to be a formula to how most races would go, whether it was Underground, Hot Pursuit 2, NFS MostWanted 2005, or NFS Carbon, every game had the same style of race formula. Basically every race, there was already a pre-assigned opponent that would automatically be the opponent who's almost neck and neck with you all race. Sometimes the specific "try hard" opponent would be tuned to a point where it didn't matter how clean of a race you drove, the Rubberbanding would keep them right on your tail the whole race, and on some occasions they'll even pass you right before the end (predictably) as kind of a "Welcome to the world of racing, you sometimes lose during the last second...it happens", even though the game was kind of forcing that upon you because you just drove a clean race. Normally the Try Hard Rubberband Ai was the only guy you had to worry about, because the other two racers often had their own script. One opponent was always set to be the guy whos reasonably behind, or is really far behind, but all that matters with him, is that he's always behind by a decent margine. If you drive a terrible race, its the only way the last place Ai will catch up to you. Often if you have a bad race too, the rubberband "try hard" AI will slow down abit and will be within a distance for you to catch up. They'll often get in weird traffic collisions and run head first into walls if they get too far ahead of you but the game wants you to win. You'll realize when playing alot of those racing games, that the game is mainly playing with you the whole time, and every race has a loose script about which people will be fast or slow etc. Lastly, the remaining Ai opponent was usually the middle of the pack ai. It's the ai who isn't rubberbanding to be neck and neck with you, but this Ai will drive a more honest race and will always be inbetween the last place Ai and you. He's the moderate Ai. But yeah, the formula was basically to have you race against a bad Ai, an average Ai, and a good Ai every race, and depending on if you were amazing or kept on getting into crashes, the races will all follow a loose script. For ex: if its a race thats supposed to be easy, thats when the Ai will slow down in random ways once they get too far ahead of you in order to stage your comeback and make you feel like you had a stallar comeback win, and if its a race where its supposed to be a challenge, the rubberband Ai will be set to be right on your tail the entire race.
Lol yeah that's a great way to describe it. Underground rubberbanding in a nutshell. I definitely saw each point you mention here, and I'd like to add it's also a cheap way for them to extend the length/duration of the game. Otherwise everyone would finish NFSU too quickly. Though I would find better ways to make the game more enjoyable instead of this rubberbanding BS.
it doesn't happen on Most wanted usually it only happened with Razor for me on most wanted. The speed trap race here 312mph in the BMW M3. While I had gone threw the trap at 274mph in viper with a stock transmission with Junkman parts over the Trans & everything else was maxed ultimate with Junkman over taht.
@@NinjaXFiles True, they need the rubberbanding to force people to lose every so often, so that people didn't sweep the entire game. They probably had the resources to make the Ai drive without any rubberbanding, but then the Ai would be set to a fixed skill level, and if certain players sucked at the video game, they'd rarely win. So back then, they were trying to simulate a fun experience for everyone, so they needed to have the ai make all sorts of mistakes, and then stage a bunch of comebacks to keep us on our heels. For me personally, it would be cool if the Ai had no rubberbanding, but they just drove fast and required me to drive a clean race to beat them. And if the Ai were to crash naturally, I'd be okay with it, I just wouldn't like those fake crashes where they're like 1000M ahead of you, and they crash into a building and sit there for 10 seconds.
@@kevinerbs2778 I find they tuned it abit in most wanted, but there's definately still alot of rubberbanding in that game, it just is more hidden and less dramatic. I find in Most Wanted, if you had a MAXED OUT car with all the JUNKMAN upgrades, and if you were lets say 2000ft ahead of the 2nd placer, if you continue driving perfectly, you'll still notice that every second theyre catching up and up and up with you. Thing in most wanted is, the Ai may have some crazy gradual comeback from 2000ft behind, but they don't often overtake you. So most wanted often let you walk away with a win, but I found rubberbanding was still happening in pretty much every race. I think I know the speed trap you're talking about. That's a thing in most wanted I found, where sometimes the Ai would have unrealistically fast speed traps around corners where they couldn't possibly be going that fast. If I remember right, the Razor speed trap can be tough, I haven't raced him in a long long time haha. I remember the all time rubberbanding race was the final Sprint against EARL, specifically in the later stages.

I remember playing Most Wanted and going flat out in a lambo fully upgraded going 300+ km/h and police passing me to cut me off like I was driving the speed limit through a school zone.
Yea even NFS Heat does it I was in a Agera going top speed on the highway and I think it was a fucking Corvette that caught, passed me, and brake checked me.

A very ghetto recording setup consisting of feeding my headphone jack into the microphone jack to record any audio. This was back when I was still using XP and fraps, since OBS wasn't a thing yet.
good run. i tried running my hunters fury build w lady death when the league first started and took way too long on the first boss especially with all the war hounds running around, it never occurred to me to just switch weapons and/or use an m1a for the longer range. fastest was 18:20 bc of the flare launch. i also feel like you gotta get really lucky with what ads spawn because i’ve had a couple runs where the starting room had an elite tank or warhounds, and multiple tries where there were 2-3 grenade warhounds in the striker drone room. then before the end of the first week and maintenance i tried running a hunters fury build with chainkiller and perfect determined to one shot everyone and just get by, but the mission was glitching really bad and nothing was proccing so i just went to bed. imma try to get a good run tomorrow so i can never touch this mission again. like the other guy said, this mission isn’t so important to me but is frustrating as fuck and i wanna beat the time out of spite.

This mission... I swear this is the only time trial mission in which every single enemy decides to hide as long as possible behind cover AND to run away permanently only to fk with me. I can't for the life of me crack the 18 minute marker. It's not really important or anything, but it annoys the hell out of me. I'm on par with you till the second to last room, in which they all just hide and run away endlessly. I'd rather not tell how many times I tried this mission with multiple different builds. Oh and don't get me started on the Boss, who stays up there (of course behind cover) till the 17 minute marker, rendering the completion in 18 minutes somewhat impossible, because shooting the flare and waiting till the mission is completed takes ~25 seconds. So I have 35 seconds to kill the Boss plus the 6 or so adds he is whining for. And ofcourse those are medics that all spread out and AGAIN... hide. I'm SO done with that mission. Sorry for the rant, had to vent somewhere. Nice run though, with some close calls.
