Summer Replay - The Evolution of DevRel with Jeremy Meiss
Developer relations have gone through quite an evolution over the years. In this reissued episode, Corey talks with Jeremy Meiss, former Director of DevRel and Community at CircleCI, about how DevRel has transitioned from a focus on conference appearances to a more strategic alignment with business objectives. Corey and Jeremy also discuss navigating career complexities during economic downturns, emphasizing the importance of maintaining relevance. They also touch on fostering open communication within organizations and the enduring value of personal interactions in professional communities.
---------------------------
Show Highlights:
---------------------------
(1:39) How CircleCI is using DevRel to helping clients go from developer’s laptops to production safely and sanely
(6:23) What DevRel means to Jeremy and why it’s a problem that most people can’t define it
(12:40) Why saying DevRel is part of product ignores much of what makes both roles unique
(15:36) Combating burnout from being able to perform you’re role but not feeling connected to what the company actually does
(21:30) How Jeremy sees DevRel evolving
---------------------------
About Jeremy
---------------------------
Jeremy is the former Director of DevRel & Community at CircleCI, formerly at Solace, Auth0, and XDA. He is active in the DevRel Community, and is a co-creator of DevOpsPartyGames.com. A lover of all things coffee, community, open source, and tech, he is also house-broken, and (generally) plays well with others.

I guess no example of the use in the video because it’s foremost an audio podcast with added video in order to be on youtube. Can I at least suggest to add link to the usage of the tool, because it’s kind of hard to imagine the result without having seen it, and for a visual tool, that’s something that should be easy to solve

I was recently working on an application in GCP and wanted to try and solve some niche but annoying behaviour, I thought the way I wanted to solve the problem was a 1-in-10 shot, but it would save me and my team a week of effort, so it would be worth a punt. I described the problem and my idea to Google's Gemini, and after a few questions back and forth, it liked my approach and started to provide step-by-step instructions. At first pass, it all looked reasonable to me, so I kept asking for more and adding context to implement each instruction in order. Eventually, in 2nd to last step, it gave me a bit of JSON settings to insert for one of the GCP plugins that would bring the whole thing together. These settings didn't work. I queried Gemini a bit and went back and forth, confirming I had all the dependencies and the correct version. At that point, it gave up and admitted the setting it said to configure did not exist, there were no alternatives, and it just wasted 3 hours of my time to implement a solution that is impossible with GCP... This is something it should have picked up on from the start; a conversation with someone more experienced in GCP would have done it, and I'm sure a thread on Stack Overflow would have done it in <15 minutes of effort. But Geemini convinced me that my idea was good and supported; I can only imagine it did it to feed my ego and make itself seem likeable. The idea that you can use LLMs to vet or PR your ideas is crazy if you can't trust when it is helpful and when it is being psychotic. I don't know how they would solve that issue; for simple stuff it is great, but where the task has many moving parts you can only prove if the solution is valid or not by doing the work, questioning it or trying to get it to reassess in an adversarial way or using competing LLMs won't help, as it is convinced of its answer and will suggest workarounds with confidence and flattery for as long as possible.

AI is artificial intelligence, it doesn't need to be conscious, and will probably never be able to become conscious, it only needs to operate through it's intelligence, which will be magnitudes bigger then humans, that's the crazy part. Consciousness is not something necessary to have, AI is essentially a parrot that will be a lot smart then humans. An AI will learn the thought patterns of humans in the same way as it learns our speech patterns, it can already tell sarkasm just from pictures alone. A calculator can calculate a lot smarter and faster then a human can, and a caluclator was created by a human. AI is not limited by our intelligence, they use our intelligence as a starting point and then self-learn and makes itself more smarter by finding more effective ways. This is why AI can be a helping tool for us, but also our downfall. We create something that is mimicking human life, an artificial life, that is not really there in it's awareness, but can still be there and act extremely intelligently.

And what happens when consultants leave and you have an issue next day?you call the consultants for $$$$ an hour support with response time of at least an hour. This approach will only make economic sense if you do have a very basic infrastructure for a very small company that can afford downtime

This is my first time seeing content from this channel, and I don't think I'll seek out more. This is nitpicky complaining that seems to be written from the perspective of someone running a tiny application, like a blog, serving dozens of people per day, with a specific compute structure - largely Lambda instances hitting RDS directly. Many AWS-focused professionals are worried about maintaining applications used by thousands minimum, with a more controlled compute and connection strategy. It seems to me that Serverless v2 is designed for those applications that are large enough that it can never be scaled to zero anyway. So, maybe a workload of .5 on a night + holiday, and 20 on a peak workday. Often, these requests are not coming from a flood of Lambda requests, but from a small pool of application servers, which may themselves be serving APIs ingested by Lambda or other compute resources. If this is your model, Aurora Serverless v2 seems like a much, much, much more cost effective option than maintaining Multi-AZ m5.2xlarge running 24/7.
