Confronting the big attendance drop - with Toby Neal, Dave Jensen and Geoff Bates
What should the church pastor / staff team / church council or bishop do about the big drop in attendance?
A new report (bit.ly/AttendancePatterns) shows Adult Attendance in churches in Sydney is down 7% or 14% against population (over a decade).
Adult attendance declined at approximately two-thirds of Sydney Anglican comparable church centers, and only one-third of church centers recorded an increase in attendance.
The big problem is newcomers. We just are not reaching them. Newcomers are down to 5.4%.
And with fewer new people joining churches, the churches that are growing are primarily growing at the expense of churches that are declining.
A noticeable decline in attendance was recorded in 2018-2019, especially in the most rapidly secularising areas of our region.
The issues are not just external. We have internal issues. There are denominational and congregational factors at play. There are key church health characteristics that show internal health factors are lower in those regions - factors relating to congregational character and leadership.
Geoff Bates pastors Life church in Sydney’s North West and chairs the committee that produced the Attendance Patterns Review report.
Toby Neal pastors Vine Church in inner Sydney, which has seen remarkable growth.
David Jensen works at assisting churches to grow in their evangelistic temperature through Evangelism and New Churches.
Host Dominic Steele also served on the committee that produced the report.

    Nearly 45 years ago I was taught in a theological college how to exigent scripture and interpret it. You do it in context of the letter it's written in, the verses around it and the wider context of the Bible. Scripture interprets scripture. If you want to change that, fine, but don't expect God to endorse it.

    Our relatively small Baptist Church in the Sydney suburbs is growing at a low rate since 2022. The main issue we are facing is quite different from those discussed in the video. We have no issue getting newcomers to drop by, come to things, but rarely do they come back regularly.

      @philipbenjamin4720 Před 4 dny

      @@ozhamada The lady who has commented is making a correct observation. Notice that in the interview someone talked about saving people from hell. This is wrong doctrine because people only become worthy of hell AFTER they have heard and refused the gospel - and then there is no way to save them from hell. (Anyone who disagrees is welcome to post from scripture where it says that people are condemned to hell from the moment they sin). And also in the interview one of the participants talked about the need to be sad that their friends would be going to hell. This is also a wrong idea which creates an environment of negativity - because the bible says that only those who obey God ARE our friends: John 15:14 ESV You are my friends if you do what I command you. I am not allowed to talk about the Sydney Anglican belief that makes God himself a horror story. When I talk about those beliefs my posts get taken down. PS There is an exception to what I stated in my first paragraph above - people can become worthy of hell by responding to God's love revealed in creation - and to their consciences - in a manner which shows that they would never accept the gospel if offered it. These are the two groups in 2 Thess 1:8-9 - those who don't know God - and those who disobey the gospel.

    Spiritual maturity and depth and maturity in worship needs to be addressed as well. The non church climate is increasingly difficult for Christians to navigate. How do we offer revenant sanctuaries for those we expect to be involved in mission, places where newcomers feel welcomed, but also feel that they are clearly in a space not of this world. We can't address the secularization of society while we don't address the secularization of the church. Just read through the report and I agree with most of the conclusions but feel this was overlooked.

      The kids are turned off by Calvinist,, "Reformed", Puritan, Evangelical cursed preachification. In Russia, the kids are flocking to the 1600+ Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom. There, EVERY Diocese is building new Churches to accommodate the youth influx. And around every 14 months, a new Diocese (!) Is created. Ditto in the Catholic Church wherever the TLM of 1570 of Pope Pius V under his "Quo Primium" Mass is served. The Novus Ordo Catholic parishes are dying. KILL the bore-you-witless protestant preaching & replace it with 1000+ year old Liturgy. Here we are talking about the "secular", Masonic BCP of 1662. And its more damaging modern "adaptations". Make the Eucharist central - Jesus said; "if I be lifted up, I will draw people unto Me". This can ONLY be done in the Eucharist where the "real presence" is both taught & believed in. NO SERMON can do this!!! God bless as you change course. And become a Eucharistic Community. M

    “ God is destroying the Church of England” - strong words. “Diverse voices within the church, yet they must stick together” - is that a compromise on the One Biblical Truth? I sense a conflict between the English national character : open- mindedness and tolerance of other opinions ( values that are democratic and wholesome in the social environment) which can not co- exist with Biblical instructions telling us to stand apart from the pagan practices ( idolatries) of the world around us. Light cannot mix with darkness. 2 Corinthians 6:14. And sadly many bishops are calling darkness ‘light’ and light as ‘darkness’. Isaiah 5:20. That is our sad reality. We/ I need repentance, fasting and prayer. God save the British Nation, as I can see tribulations ahead as a result of the current apostasy.

      @@VillageChurch.Sydney I think having a strong family unit makes a huge difference. My parents gave me a wonderful stable and loving childhood (even though they divorced when I was 13), and we all approached the travelling and living abroad with gusto. We all loved it. We were also very close with my mother's Australian family (in the Mid North Coast & upper Macleay Valley, as well as some on overseas postings) and we visited them often while we were on leave from Kuwait & PNG. And we had a house in England so we also visited my father's family while on leave in the UK. For my parents generation (born in the 1920s), it was usual to go overseas to live, starting with WW2 service, and both my parents were adventurers. So I have always found the notion of living in the one place rather odd! And not surprisingly I married another expat Third Culture Kid, the son of an Irish Guards RSM. Irish father, English mother, he lived in the UK (Reading, Sandhurst, Windsor, & boarding school), Germany, & Hong Kong. He moved to Australia as an adult. So we are both English, Irish, & Australian in background, and worldwide in outlook. And we both feel rather hard-done-by to have missed out on the amazing colonial expatriate lives lived by our parents. We can remember it all, and we know what we are missing! Happily, via Facebook, there are lots of Groups for keeping in touch with the Kuwait Oil Company kids, the St Michael's School girls, the l Lived in PNG folk, the Ela Beach Primary kids, and so on. And that's just representing ages 0-13, before starting on friends made at high school, university, college, etc! I have childhood friends all over the world, it's a wonderful thing.
