I ramble about Magic: the Gathering. I've played for over 20 years and bring a unique perspective on the game's multitude of formats. Everything from finance to old Type 2 metagames, Pauper, Legacy... whatever is interesting to me at the moment. I hope you enjoy!

Premodern can be expensive but you don't necessarily need a lot of money to compete in this format. This deck is a pretty good one that is also pretty cheap! Very sweet!

You should whisper some more 😂😂 speak up bro
Cool video
A Seal of Fire/Jackal Pup turn 1 -> second mountain and Flame Rift is 6 damage. If you have Fireblast in hand that is 10 damage you are capable of pushing out, on TURN 2. Are you going to dump everything for 10 damage on turn 2? No likely not. But, the point is that Flame Rift accelerates the gameplan SO much.
also thanks for the shout out lol
Haha no problem. It's not cronyism or nepotism you just have ideas that are well reasoned that I agree with.
Sweet cards 😂
Seeing this card for the first time and it might be based
Eugenics is based. I can play both Bauble and Flame Rift.
I love this card. It's in my Premodern Burn deck for sure.
What is the conspicuous snoop combo?
Snoop in play without summoning sickness, Kiki on to of library, Snoop tapping to copy itself a few hundred times and then last copy targets Recruiter then changes top card to be Mogg Fanatic or some variant of that card.
Love the deck tech, do you happen to have a deck list somewhere in writing?
Blood moon & Ruination! A true red player!
Sweet deck! Looks fun to play!
Here's a deck tip: switch commander to pantlaza lmao
Sweet video!
Pretty sure humans tribal is good
I think the best you can say is it's "fine". And that's being a bit generous.
Is it bad that the only things I look forward to in new sets is anything thats relevant for Premodern... Like, new old border lands? Hell yes. New old-border reprints of staples like Counterspell? Hell yes. New reprints of the pain lands? Hell yes. But, a new One-Peice crossover set with a 150$-a-pop must-include format warping card? Hell no.
I hate the UB and think it's bad for the game but I still would like to see Gear 5 Luffy in the next Standard set lmao. Can't wait till half of Legacy is Sephiroth decks.
Pandemonium fits very vell with saproling burst
Somehow, I can't get enough of Sneak attack brews. Subscribed ;)
I actually really liked that sligh list. But not 4x Fireblast can't be correct. I think id go -3 Vortex and +3 Fireblast. Also, parfait decks make me wanna barf.
Why dont you do an elf deck❤
hi mountain
Love Ankh Sligh and have been brewing a version of it since I discovered premodern last summer. Our lists are pretty similar but my take on it uses Kris Mage to help fill the yard for the Lavamancers and to render useful late-game Ankhs and extra copies of Scroll beyond workable reason. (Late game mountains, too.) I just haven't settled on the right number of Mages yet, or what to cut out to put them in, and the deck hasn't seen enough play to fully compare all my options.
Kinda like that tbh. Seems not too bad IMHO.
Blood moon and price of progress dont match i think
Read the name of this as "Ankh Slag" and I refuse to acknowledge that's not the name of the deck
OK I will re-record this video and do it this way!
You could always go with the Mt. Fuji Mountain for the based and redpilled homogeneous ethnostate look. 🐸
The artworks from today are more evil since Mirrodin, and i dont mean that in a positive way. In former times they were created with more love.
25:05 the main reason to play the 1 maindeck Null Rod is to shut off mana rocks like Mox Diamond that allow the opponent to escape the Contamination lock. Also because some decks have started running Crypt or Furnace maindeck. When you need Null Rod you really need it, and a one of that you can discard to ZI if needed is a pretty low opportunity cost.
That seems pretty weak. It's not like decks playing moxen make up a huge part of the meta and then having to draw it vs those decks (Gamble not being an option to consistently tutor it). The only commonly played deck that runs Crypt or Furnace iirc is Parfait. I'm not exactly excited to run a narrow card because you can discard it to ZI. That, with its limited applications, make me question playing it MD.
@@mountainwalkI disagree with you. This deck runs squee and krokivan horror that make your hand size fairly large, you usually know early if null rod is necessary or not and u also have a lot of random utillity such as shutting off powder kegs, scroll racks, cursed scrolls, lotus petals, phyrexian devourer etc... As a 1of that worst case scenario can just be fodder for infestation it seems very good imo. Despite this disagreement, thanks for these videos on the metagame as these give us insight on new techs brew and strategies. Keep up the good work
Thank you!
dude i really like your voice. its so chill . i don't even know if i like premodern that much but i come back for your voice.

Yesterday I have started to building my merfolk commander deck. I have spended like whole day on it. Listing all merfolk cards database and just picking right ones. Now I have like 300 cards and need them squeeze to commander deck 😅 your video is great help right now for me. Thanks and Marry Christmass
That's awesome! I'm glad it helped ya. Merry Christmas to you as well!
Great video for my favorite commander! I enjoyed the reasons behind running some of the cards. Putting flavour first is the best part of commander for me.
Thank you, that is very kind of you to say!
Thanks for putting this together. I'm getting into premodern and am starting by exploring different mono green options. This was a nice intro to 10 land stompy.
I am here once more like an abusive father who left the family and is trying to rekindle the flame of fatherly love and connection to his children. You must forgive me for my abscense and for my cruel emotional abandonment for it was not my fault but the police that raided my house and found 56kgs of cocain in it. However I swear it was not mine but a frienda. He said he wanted to keep it for a day or two and i was definitely not distributing any of it. Thus being free of any guilt or crime i am here to meet you once again, my lost son.
I liked the part about cocaine. I could really relate to it.
Really appreciate these videos, I try to keep up with the new lists but I like to hear your opinion on them!
Thank you very much! That is very kind of you to say!
i won't buy 4 fetches tho. i play a version that use 2 slow fetches from mirage "mountain valley" and 2 odyssey filter lands "mossfire valley". it is cheaper and mana is still good.
Yeah, it's worse, but still playable for sure.
i am building it this month. just got 4 birds of paradise fwb.
Very sweet!
What do you think about Intuition over Fact or Fiction in the maindeck?
Could be fine, I don't remember if I've tested it before!
Good video.
premodern is the best format! ever!
Where is the specter? This is his deck 😞
It could be played in the SB as a card against combo decks or the like.
This is how i played Wildfire lately, mostly because there is A LOT of goblins, madness and elves in my metagame, so this deck is basically killing those, + some things against control: Lands (22): 4 - Ancient Tomb 4 - Sandstone Needle 3 - City of Traitors 11 - Mountain Creatures (8): 4 - Covetous Dragon 4 - Crater Hellion Artifacts (19): 2 - Cursed Scroll 4 - Fire Diamond 2 - Worn Powerstone 2 - Mindstone 3 - Winter Orb 1 - Icy Manipulator 1 - Mishra's Helix 4 - Thran Dynamo Sorceries (11): 4 - Burning Wish 3 - Arc Lightning 1 - Hammer of Bogardan 3 - Wildfire Sideboard (15): 4 - Pyroblast 3 - Pyroclasm 1 - Shattering Pulse 1 - Recoup 1 - Arc Lightning 1 - Pillage 1 - Anarchy 1 - Wildfire 1 - Decree of Anihilation Sometimes i put Urza's Rage instead of Decree but, now i am on that atm.
Looks pretty good to me!
@@mountainwalk yeah and how good is Hammer of Bogardan? Having that advantage after blowing the table is amazing
@@raizarslaxterhaha yeah, having a recurring damage source/CA is pretty valuable in a deck like this with so few sources of it.
@@mountainwalk yeah, the triple red buyback its a bit hard but, it is wat it is
I am a super fan of Stasis, people hate but i don't care 😅😅 About the deck, never use 4 black vise. Its a dead card without stasis. I always try to include mind over matter in Stasis, and always try to include a graveyard shuffler (feldon cane for example). Btw portent its very good in this deck. And powder keg its more of a sideboard card in this deck.
MoM at 6 mana is just too expensive. But the rest are good points. But I'm always playing 4 Vise in any deck it's actually good in I have some FBB copies that I rarely get to use. Stasis is sweet. You got good taste.
@@mountainwalk yeah i only usually play one MoM just as a niche card, its just i love it su much 😅 Also, with Stasis, you can go 2 routs: The Howling Mine way The Control/Morphling way Depends on the meta, you play one or another, but against control decks (landstill, solution, etc) the Howling Mine version its way better, and the other one is maybe more complete as it can compete better against aggro and combo. I know people that use the magpie drawing engine in the deck but, ive never like it. And about portent, some people say that they prefeer the AK, other Sleight of Hand...i like any of the 3 to be honest so, its a preference thing. In the Howling Mine version i think Portent its better because it filters you 3 cards, but maybe in the more control one, AK its a better engine. I love this deck so much.
I get that, Mind Over Matter is a sweet card. I don't think I've seen anyone play Thieving Magpie but that seems really bad, turning on your opponents removal seems bad. I like Portent in a deck like this with a ton of instants because the delayed draw isn't as bad.
@@mountainwalk portent is a great card in this deck yes
Oh and btw, another card that i use as a singleton main deck is Ivory Tower in the Howling Mine version of the deck, and in the normal version of the deck i used it in the sideboard because its actually very good against decks like goblins, madness, sligh, wildfire, mud, and decks that go to the beatdown. If they cant take the Tower away in 2/3 turns, combined with the mines and gush, you win alll aggro decks
How about Survival of the fittest? Obviously fits great
Survival is fine but doesn't fix the big problems with the deck, namely that it's so slow and it's mana is bad.
@@mountainwalk seems to be a problem for a lot of decks in the format since dual lands and some other key cards are not allowed. Otherwise many decks like Gro-A-Tog would be super strong.
@@mountainwalk whats the goldfish clock for this deck?
Undisrupted? Pretty slow lol. Like turn 5+
Yeah if you had duals like old Extended and it would be very strong. It would be insane if you also had BS and FoW in addition to duals.
The problem with punishing fire and jitte is that they kill aggro decks very easy and in Modern they are already in a weak situation right now.
But they're so slow and not even as good as what exists already (Fury and Wrenn) and they're hot garbage vs the rest of the format, I'm not worried at all. It's the same reaction as "we can't unban Jace or BBE because they would break the format!" Or like land tax or black vise, bc they would break legacy!" People don't take a second to understand a cards role in the metagame if unbanned, how it functioned in previous formats, what the card does and only parrot what reddit says. In short, I'm not really concerned about those cards.
@@mountainwalk its not about the metagame, its just, they 2 overpowered cards against decks that are tier 2.5/3 now at most and that they need even some kind of push at the moment. Are they broken? No, of course not. But the only problem is that, they would inmediatly make the life of an entire way of playing, much harder on an already VERY hard format to them. Among the other cards, the artifact lands make Affinity better but thats not even the problem, its more of Urza kinda problem. Broken? Without the moxes and the disciple, Affinity aint that big, so... maybe.
We're mostly talking about tribal, right? These are the decks that are the most effected by Punishing Fire and Umezawa's Jitte. I'd posit that the real reason these decks aren't played much is a lack of reasons FOR playing the decks not due to any particular response to them i.e. the problem is the decks themselves are too weak to even want to play. A good example of that is even if they banned Wrenn and Fury my Zubera tribal deck will still be garbage because the synergies present aren't at a Modern powerlevel. Though it should be noted that recent printings from Dominaria United have brought these stragglers up which brings me to my next point. I disagree, somewhat, that tribal decks aren't good. I think Goblins is very good and very underplayed and is the best of all the tribal decks because it can grind through a ton of removal due to Snoop, Ringleader, Matron, Hordemaster and has a two card combo where both cards are pretty good by themselves. It can already deal with Fury and Wrenn pretty well as-is and Punishing Fire and Jitte are far slower, less able to be played MD that cards that are already legal are more vulnerable to counterplay, in Jitte's case that would be Cratermaker, Trashmaster as well as cards like Expert, Skirk, SGL that matchup very well against it. P-Fire also requires another card to even be playable in the format and even then its bad against a lot of decks. Merfolk is pretty solid too and certainly has benefitted from the recent printing of Vodalian Hexcatcher. Elves as well from Leaf-Crowned Visionary. I think these decks are worse than Goblins but are certainly much more reasonable decks now. And even they have answers to P-Fire and Jitte available without having to warp their decks at all. Fury and Wrenn are much worse to deal with than the aforementioned banned cards. And even they aren't enough to dissuade people from sleeving up tribal decks and doing well in MODOchallenges. Or winning them, In Goblin's case. Yeah, the artifact lands are more concerning because they're "free" and have a lot of upside in the decks they're good in like Affinity or (perhaps more concerning) Hammer. But they're really not that insane without Mox Opal. And they have the nasty side-effect of making artifact hate cards like Stony Silence or Hurkyll's Recall even more brutal so in a lot of situations they're actually detrimental.
Well we need to see what happens. Like, for example, they are going to make even FASTER the dream halls combo deck, probably reanimator its going to give a push, etc. We will see
Well i have been playing Dream Halls combo the entire weekend with Show and Tell, and around 60 games against different decks, and my small opinion: My % of win went up around a 20%. And in general, my turn winning combo or trying too, was decreased by 1 turn, so i am faster with it. I was much broken? Not really. Yes i was a bit faster and more secure in general but, not by that much. See it broken? Not at all at this point. This month and next i am gonna play Dream Halls in 6 different tournaments so i will see how it goes.
Very cool! Thank you for the data! S&T certainly makes the resolving Dream Halls part of the combo much better/faster but doesn't really fix the not fizzling issues.
