    I wanted to love this movie more than I did. I did not find Oliver's motivations all that clear or compelling. He did not seem to particularly care about Saltburn or the rich lifestyle, so while I appreciate a good dark ending and a subversive ending at that, I was not totally satisfied with the conclusion. Felix's family were vacuous, but they were not necessarily awful people, at least, not as awful as Oliver. And if Elspeth was such an awful person, then why did she throw Oliver a birthday party and invite Oliver back to Saltburn, once the father died? That said, I loved that you framed this movie as more of an obsessive artist narrative than an "eat the rich" narrative, since it kind of fails at the latter. The idea that this was about one-upmanship more than a desire for Felix makes way more sense. Thank you for this video!

    I was homeschooled preschool through high school graduation. While my parents weren't to the level of yours, (nor our denomination for that matter), my parents definitely qualified as helicopter parents, especially when compared to the other parents from our church at the time, who let their children do things that everyone else basically did. Fast forward to my second half at college, and I get involved with a group of friends. A lot of them were homeschooled with the same curriculum I had at some point. Not only that, but it's like we're cut from the same cloth- if said cloth is being neurodivergent nerds who make bad jokes at the worst times lol. I feel like our shared experiences make us super close as a result, and really willing to be emotionally open. Your video reminded me a lot of us- we're finding our own way together.

    Beautiful video. Reminds me of my homeschooled friends who were abused and didn't even know it 😭 like yes public school kids are abused too but in my experience they sit around talking about it in the gym or cafeteria and can figure out something is up... the homeschool kids often either aren't exposed to others or if so it's other isolated kids who don't know any better. It's also concerning when these isolated homeschoolers are sent to tiny faith based or online colleges and don't get to experience "the world" through college.😢

    • @bryjarvello5140
      @bryjarvello5140 Před 2 měsíci

      The people who made our faith-based curriculum had a college but it was out of state and cost too much to attend so I was lucky in that regard. It really can be a tough situation for people but I always have hope in the fact that it’s nearly impossible to go through life without some exposure to the outside world that opens possibilities to new ideas.

    personally, finding out the truth about oliver's family only made the movie better to me : some might prefer the rational, eat-the-rich explanation, but from my pov, ollie's actions being hardly understandable add a layer of darkness and mystery, like "....why did he do that?? why is he like that?" i loved the sort of complexity it added to the character

    • @bryjarvello5140
      @bryjarvello5140 Před 2 měsíci

      Right? I feel like generally audiences expect a rational reason for this kind of behavior but instead this kind of makes the watcher look inward and think about what they would do to get what they want despite their tax bracket

  • @elizrebezilmadommdo1662
    @elizrebezilmadommdo1662 Před 2 měsíci

    I notice that a ton of people who had helicopter parents seem to identify with Rapunzel from Tangled (I know not all homeschool parents are helicopter parents and vise versa, but they do tend to have a strong correlation). The media doesn't seem to understand what it actually means to be or be raised by a helicopter parent, and I see the term overused by people who haven't actually experienced it or talked to someone who has. They think simply being around your child or setting reasonable curfews is "helicopter parenting", but like when people say "lol I'm so depressed!" it gets overused and the severity of the abuse gets watered down, because it gets mixed up with parents who are just moderately protective, when overused by kids with normal parents who are upset by rules and parents who are normal but think what they're doing is "too much" because their standards for how close or strict they should be to their child are lower. Actual helicopter parenting, whether the parents have good or bad intentions, looks a lot more like how Mother Gothel raised Rapunzel. It unintentionally became the most accurate portrayal of it, with some exaggerations and minus the magic. The lack of boundaries, little autonomy, little exposure to the "real world", isolation, the sheltering, the ulterior motives to hide something or control their kids disguised as them "just being scared for their child", etc. These type of parents disguise their need for control over their children as "concern for safety", but they know better. What scares me is when these types of parents decide to homeschool. When kids who grow up these types of parents go to school, it's often the closest thing they have to being exposed to the real world, and it's their only sanctuary from their parents and place they get to meet their friends. Homeschooling can be great when they parents are good people, but unfortunately, homeschool appeals to a lot of not so good people who could use this right to homeschool as an opportunity to hide their abuse or indoctrination or to give their children even less autonomy and independence than they already do, or both, often times.

    I’m sorry to hear about people who had a hard time homeschooling. Public school was bad for me so I asked my mom to homeschool me and I loved it. This video was incredibly sweet. It reminds me of how I was treated by my parents. They never let me learn how to function in the world. Even outright telling me I'd never be able to make it on my own. So when they died, I was without people there to keep me from experiencing the world. It's true I have a little help. But except needing someone to drive me to the store for groceries, I'm able to take care of myself. When I want to go to the mall, I learned how to take the bus. I pay my own bills. I take care of my own money. I take care of my house. It's sad that it took that to happen before I could prove to at least myself that I am able to make it in the world. But at least I was able to prove it.

    I love this video so much. I watched tangled today and bawled my eyes out at many parts, then of course went to youtube to try and find the answer to my feelings. And luckily, the algorithm pointed me your way. Tangled came out when I was 7, the same year and time my mom and I got involved in a very traditional and religious church. That was also around the time I was pulled out of public school and started homeschooling. Rapunzel was the first disney princess I really connected with (on a deeper level than liking aurora cause she was pink, anyway) and the story was there for me right at a time when my life was /really/ starting to get more isolated. I watched this movie over and over, had a very well-loved rapunzel doll, imagined being trapped in my own tower and bravely escaping. Like you say in the video, it wasn't all bad, and I have a lot of good memories and experiences from that part of my life--and I think a lot of it did help me become who i am today. But getting to choose my own life in my teenagehood and college was SO freeing, knowing there was more out there than what I had been taught and told. All of this to say, SAME, man, and it's so gratifying to see someone out there with a similar experience/relationship to this movie as me. So thank you for making this video! Here's to escaping the tower.

BUT when Felix dropped dead, I thought he had committed suicide bc Oliver 'saw' who he really was and he couldn't deal with someone else knowing that so he killed himself bc of it. Was so happy farleigh was offed because he was such an annoying pest throughout the movie.. LOL. I didn't know Venetia was going to be gone like that, but her passing makes sense. I honestly found myself cheering for Oliver towards the end of the movie... so maybe that just says a lot about me.... overall great film and can't wait to see what Ms. Fennell has in store for us next!

    Barbie? Maybe Oppenheimer, but Barbie does not deserve a single award. It was a cute movie with some cute laughs. It looks like Oppenheimer is going win a lot of awards, but Saltburn was so much better. It's a shame it is not being taken more seriously. I think it's the best film from 2023 with no contenders. I completely disagree. It's as shallow as a puddle with no meaning yet takes itself brutally seriously, undermining the satire and more. Emerald even admitted that it's just supposed to be a fun film about obsession. It is perversely inspired by films that did it better years - decades ago. The third act causes the film to fall apart resulting in the first act to be a laughable setup with no payoff. The cinematography + casting is phenomenal but that just doesn't cut it, especially with the stacked competition this year. You can't create a story that inevitable treads on themes such as class and then ignore the weight it comes with in your film. You can't tread into 'The Menu' and 'Parasite' territory and then throw it out the window acting like your footprints aren't all over it. You can't just set up major plot lines for characters and then kill them off (effectively destroying any chance to explore them - I'm looking at Felix, Oliver, Venetia, Farleigh, Elspeth, and the Butler. If there isn't a prequel or "if Oliver didn't kill them", we're gonna have problems Emerald (because I genuinely enjoyed the concepts and characters. I saw the vision)). It's essentially 'The Talented Mr. Ripley meets Euphoria and + a downgrade (although Saltburn also seems heavily inspired by other films). The "shocking" scenes barely had any build-up causing them to not hit like they should've narratively. Where Saltburn went wrong was taking itself too seriously as a shallow film to even be considered by the Oscar's combined with having a poorly executed twist in a completely fumbled third act that could've been seen from a mile away. It wasn't clever yet it was begging for you to think it was. According to Emerald, that wasn't even the purpose. It wasn't supposed to but it inevitably did. Saltburn was a beautiful film with magnificent concepts that was ultimately unfulfilling due to its immense potential to be incredible. It should have been a series in my opinion. #WeNeedASeriesDedicatedToFarleighAndElspeth'sStory There are also major plot lines like the fact that according to the laws of english primogeniture, Saltburn wasn't actually Elspeth's to will away to Oliver, thus it would've become Farleigh's or his mother's. Not to mention Felix's death. Even if we give that one a pass, Venetia's had EXTREMELY OBVIOUS signs of struggle with puddles of blood everywhere. It looked very violent. For me, aside from getting pissed off after characters with gold mines of plot died, this is a fun empty-calorie type film.

    I feel as if Oliver was so obsessed with Felix and once he realized he couldn’t have him, which I believe had been his goal at the beginning, he killed him. If he couldn’t have him then no one else could. I also believe he wanted to become Felix as well which is why I’d call it obsession rather than love. After Felix died he still felt the desire to take something for himself which is why he then decided he was going to take Saltburn. Could be wrong though but that’s the way I viewed it.
