It sounds like City Year is itself engaging in objectification. I'm a lot like the person you describe in the video - white, grew up in the suburbs, two parent household, I do research for a living, etc. The idea that someone with my background can't empathize with the experiences of others is a false, outdated stereotype, and one that's incredibly ironic coming from an organization that quotes Margaret Mead. I served in City Year 20 years ago and the only time I hear from you is when you want another donation.
