~~Video Description~~
This is a silly video. A very silly video indeed. But hey, St George's Day was a few days ago, so why not? How could a Napoleonic era military compete against a fantasy-inspired giant fire breathing lizard? In this video I detail how I think they could do it- and hopefully manage to talk about a few real-life elements of Napoleonic Warfare along the way!

I agree this battle will play more like naval engagemen than ground one. 1; Cripple the dragons' wings (naval guns were designed to shot opwards to destroy sails). 2; Finnish him with heavy artillery. Lot depends on if this is one time freak occurence or dradons are common to attack settlements.
There is a very good video on CZcams about the details of Victory and just what an amazing piece of engineering she is. Complicated well beyond what you would expect and built by people with amazing skill and ability.
Thank you for making such an insightful video that honors the firsthand experiences and account of those experiencing war. For far too long, I've met many people whose obsession of war is so technical and absent of story that it feels perverse to listen to them talk. I was relieved and horrified by this video and I'm eager to see more from you.
I love it how he equips us with the knowledge of how to deal with a god like dragon. Lesser drakes will be dealt with, with earlier steps.
Creatures project things from their bodies at some surprising velocities when it is important. Sharks for instance have evolved to shoot their poo several metres through water. (as there is the concern that scent markers from their carnivorous diet, and minor internal injuries from constantly swallowing teeth may result in another shark biting them on the arse.)
Well it's clearly projecting a large amount of burning liquid, jelly at great velocity. Bursting ships shouldn't be surprising. The bursting of stone buildings maybe, as it would be analogous to say being hit by a tsunami. The bursting of stone walls on the other hand...
I live in Pennsylvania in carlisle but my older brother lives in Newville. The amount of years living in Newville I have no Idea there was a airsoft field in there, if not driving through Newville my whole life I have never seen a airsoft field. I never knew it was there. That's news for me.
I definitely think my favorite thing about this video is it doesn't seem to treat the dragon as an animal-rather, Brandon seems to have taken into account the fact that much of dragon fiction depicts them with intelligence at least equal to a human's, and therefore the tactics depicted seem complex enough to take it down. Different contingencies seem to have been taken into account as well-for example, even if the dragon manages to spot the covered/masked battery before their time to fire has come, the sheer number of cannons (combined with the support of the flying batteries) may still be enough to give the army the upper hand. The tactics also seem designed to keep the dragon from realizing it should retreat until after its ability to do so has been taken away.
Is it me, or do I hear faint Victoria II music souding faintly on the background? 9:35 yep, it is Victoria II music.
I remember in the Temeraire books, they use “pepper guns” to fend off dragons. They have cannons specially designed to aim upward and fire charges filled with irritating chemicals that explode like flak rounds. The cloud of “pepper” is too irritating for dragons to risk flying through without becoming temporarily blind and distracted. Which might not sound like much, but it degrades their fighting ability and makes them very vulnerable to further gunfire, or being pounced on by an enemy dragon
Your first goal in a battle against a dragon is to ground it. Cavalry can finish it off.
Yeah, it proved to be a serious safety issue during the run up to the various US Civil War centennial events, which is why BAR (and US reenacting in general) went "no ramrods!". 😅
This is powerscaling for adults
Oval Formations were used by scottish formations during the wars of independence at bannockburn and falkirk. They were called schiltrims.
Glad to see I'm not the only madman who think of this warhammer-ish matches. Roman legions vs zombie hordes, medieval armies vs dragons, napoleonic reggiments vs giants...
because reenactment =/= simulation?
my husband told me while in the Democratic republic of Congo the mud was a nightmare and he was there for peacekeeping talking to my husband he told me of a situation in July of 2013 he carried a radio and he jumped off the IFV Ratel he was on and tripped face first into redish clay mud that almost suffocated him. His friends and fellow soldiers dug him out his radio pack weighed him down. It’s something my husband will never forget

THREAT TO DEMOCRACY DETECTED
"Fuck it. I'm bored."
Benjamin Martin is not a "Patriot" at all ! He is a man driven by revenge and hatred. His actions have nothing to do with love of independence or freedom from tyranny, he just wants to kill the guy who shot his kid. Gibson has spent too much time in Australian pubs listening to their anti- "Pommy" BS. I'm surprised the Romans in the "Passion" didn't have Cockney accents !
20:14 so nice of Winnie The Pooh to narrate
Hmmm. What if we (meaning not me), took a real military view of this issue. You know. LOGISTICS! How much food & water does the Dragon require and what type? Are Dragons fireproof? (Flamethrowers aren't, for example) How much time can it spend in combat before fatiguing? What's it's range and loiter time? Can it communicate with other Dragons? Will they come to its aid, avenge its death, or seek to finish it off and take over its stuff? How much fuel is there for that super-flame? What is the "reload" speed for the flame breath (tactical and operational)? And what about that Werewolf Army waiting in the wings?
Amazing. No grenades, no explosives, no cannon, no machine gun, no mortars. Not all 150 were even in condition to fight.
In the words of sergeant Major Plumley, “by the time I need a rifle, there will be plenty laying on the ground”
So Marines are the best troops against dragons
I would trust you to lead my Napoleonic army against a dragon.
27:42 Well, no, because the blade is turned the wrong way
Dragons are severely overhyped in the aspect of durability. Creatures which can withstand cannonballs to even a minor degree are all land or seaborne. Airborne biology needs to be fragile owing to the softness of flesh, especially if high aerial agility is to be achieved. One hit from any cannonball and a dragon will suffer broken bones, ruptured organs, spalling and a flood of blood loss from the giant exit wound.
Canon balls are not that big too, but they are still terrible.
@@El_Gungas Small balls make it all the more easier to overkill dragons by concentrating even more force, thereby increasing the range of human lethality, which happens to be significantly further than dragon breath already. On the flip side, dragons can be quite big, so little balls of death would have an increased chance of hitting bone, organs and neck alongside limbs.
I learned how to knife fight from a Vietnam veteran, he told me “if you can’t kill in one stab don’t bother stabbing”
I wonder if the future generations will re enact vietnam or even ww3
i have always had that question since i was in 93th grade, thanks man

Working on a napelonic fantasy setting rn and this video was extremely helpful
Dart blasters are always an option. There are many that have even been made to look like and function like real life guns from many time periods. I guess picking up darts would be very time consuming and tedious so picking a battlefield would have a lot more restrictions.
It’s also significantly less realistic than using real guns with blanks
This is nonsense and by God I love it ! Moire Brandon, more !
My personal advice-dont do that pause, like you're looking for a way how to put it. That "eh uh(the pause, at 3:06-3:10) basically it's going to be the king". You come off as less genuine and trying to use someone else's speech fashion as your own, however popular it may be.
Yeah bro you're an insane lunatic for thinking that a swimming pool at a death camp is weird. Don't you understand history?
I guess I have three problems with this plan. One: It goes against doctrine, which may force an army to rewrite its playbook on the fly. That's risky as hell. Two: The dragon has the initative throughout most of the fight. It can withdraw at any time after wasting most of batteries, heal up, and come back when you're in camp. Three: The bait is pretty much unguarded once the Forlorn Hope withdraw. What's to stop the dragon absconding with the bait once the batteries are toast? Also, great video. Love the empirical angle and studiousness. Well done!
Smaug: "You fools! I am DEATH!" Wellington: "Now's your time, Maitland!"
I'm not going to give you a hard time for being unaware of the popular Temeraire series of books about dragons and Napoleonic warfare. I'm instead going to give you a hard time for apparently thinking Lovecraft was an 18th century writer. Also I can't see cavalry charging a dragon, I suspect even the best horse would spook at the sight of a gigantic animal breathing fire.
What makes you think I thought Lovecraft was 18th C.?
There's a line in your ad about capturing "the lovecrafty 18th century vibe".
@@davidgorman4034 Oh, that's where the mixup came. "A" Lovecrafty, 18th C. vibe. As in, Lovecraft in the 18th C., was my intention.
1:00 for anyone thinking "bro, you don't need to sell me on this."
Someone's been reading a specific book series.
Hmmm, a lot changes if there is some sort of guiding intellect behind the dragons actions. If it has a dragonrider, human or human ish, then there is another weakpoint to target, but it will also act far more intelligently. Instead of burning larger formations, I imagine it might pick up rocks, smaller boulders, perhaps entire trees, and, from far up in the sky, beyond the upwards range of muskets, drop them down at the infantry, making it fall into disarray, and incapable of launching that great incapacitating volley. But at least there's the weakpoint of the rider. If the dragon is akin to smaug, and just straight up smart, there's not even that. There might be some way of fighting this, but beyond poison, I do not know of one. If you, or someone else does, then I would be quite interested. The intelligent dragon especially, is very dangerous, and it might be worth it to just appease it with a horde, and otherwise ignore it. The expense of both feeding a beast with no doubt a great appetite, and also supplying it with a horde, though, would most likely weaken any state to such a degree that it would become ripe pickings for what contenders exist. Though if such an arrangement was made, the dragon might well come to see this supplying state as part or party to it's horde, and as such ensure it could continue supplying it with one. I do disagree on that final charge, though. It would be used, of course, but it would not be first recourse. An intelligent commander would simply retreat away from the dragon, and let it lay upon the ground, weakening due to time and lack of feed. I imagine they would then establish some manner of beached dragon repellent fortifications and obstacles. It would take some effort, to be sure, but would be far more economical than this great charge, and as such, would become the main version. Perhaps it would be pelted from some distance with artillery and infantry vollies when asleep, but with ammunition being no small expense(the redcoats, iirc, fired only 40 bullets a year for training for this reason, and was considered unusual in firing such a great quantity), I assume it would be rare, or rapidly phased out. I suspect the great charge would see main use in two circumstances. The first would be when the dragon traversed these obstacles and neared a target of great enough worth to make sacrificing such great amounts of cavalrymen and horses(the latter especially being a great expense) a lesser loss. The second would be when the commanding officer is a glory hog, and wants the reputation of a dragonslayer. Edit: Oh shit lmao, in my interest in continuing the discussion, I forgot to say. Good video, I enjoyed watching it.
What kind of dragon are you fighting that it could survive half of this.
