For me this was one of the highlights of The Carpet Event at Blackpool 2024 in front of The Tower on The Comedy Carpet was seeing Oliver Yates at 14 demonstrate how it should be done. Never danced in my life, and my life is nearly over
I have danced from the age of 16 and still do so when at an event or club I am nearly 72 it has been a great joy in my life.
We did this it was called free style in the late seventies respect

I remember watching these on TOTP. tbh as a London teenager, this was totally alien to me and my mates: we couldn't take it seriously. Well as a Nan in her 60s now l really appreciate how enduring this has been. I love watching people my age getting out there on the dance floor, still enjoying the dancing and the music.How wonderful to be able to go and recreate your youth at any age, amongst like-minded people. I know it's got a bit of a Cult following in trendy clubs all around the country now. But its roots will surely always be in Wigan. We watched the film Northern Soul not long ago (Steve Coogan). Alright, it's 10yr old now but we loved it!!
It's amazing how music and dance can bring people together across generations! I am blessed that I have appreciated this music and dance from the age of 17 now 72 and this music means perhaps more today than ever as days start to run out KTF

Not to be a "Debbie Downer," but 40 years ago, the standard was high - and I mean HIGH!! Sharon fron Oxford was (imo) the winner. Her footwork was tight, varied, and light. Still, it was enjoyable to watch 👍
It's fascinating to see how the standards have evolved over the 55 years for me I agree that at the age of 17 at The Catacombs it was very high I could spin and do the drops but these days at 72 I can still shuffle but following a stroke I cant spin but do what I can. I was at the Winter Gardens last weekend were I saw my friend James Whitehead again probably the best northern soul I have ever seen he is brilliant. KTF

I remember riding my lambraretta Gt 200 from island room Mecca Blackpool with my pal Tony Hull to Wigan casino through the pissing rain down a foggy motorway this record was playing when we arrived I think it was Richard sterling playing it . I remember turning to Tony saying let’s enjoy this whilst we can pal because one day we will be old , Tony turned and said I’ll never be old he was correct died a 39 years old I’m now 67 and it seems like yesterday, how true the words of this song are there was a year between me and Tony RIP mate you spoke the truth. How I miss these days 😔
