Watched Threads as a 17 year old when it was originally shown on the BBC. It’s a film that once seen never leaves you, it gets under your skin in a way no other movie I have ever watched has done. It’s a work of profound genius and should be mandatory viewing in every senior school.
Que obra de arte!!!
THIS MOVIE IS THE OFFICE FOR MILLENNIALS. TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT!!!!!!!! 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
Whats up Joe? How u been?
I’ve been great. I don’t miss doing CZcams at all because instead I have been focusing on making short films like I used to. It is more rewarding. There will be a nice professional short on the channel probably in. Late June or July. How are you doing?
@JoeLaRocca Looking forward to your new project man! Miss your presence but I totally understand the feeling of working on stuff outside of CZcams. Keep us posted 📫
WOW-how can you have only 2k subscribers? WHAT A GREAT VOICE, and what a great review!!!! WOW!
Thanks friend. I'm a fish in a sea of fish, there is no way to stand out.
It’s pronounced “Swa-dheys” not Swayds 🤦🏻♂️
Cool. You are really cool.
If I were your "review teacher" you'd probably get an F- 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️.
There is no such thing as an F-
It was a good movie, thank GOD, I seen the movie befor this long drawn out boring "review" 💯🤦🏾♂️
Movie stinks. I can’t imagine watching this movie and then looking up CZcams videos and watching one as bad as mine will be thinking
Nicole Kidman really doesn't look sexual she looks very modest in the movie, just her haircut alone really kills any sexual vibe, the movie is really far from being sexual it's focused on the emotional aspect, her and the boy don't really have any sexual tension between them it's a an emotional relation This movie is an excellent thriller mystery story that still isn't solved wether it's the man or not the man, the man shown in the beginning died in a Snowy place while running and the kid is basically a dead person who speaks with a cold/snowy voice like he really died he's very convincing as a dead person
Awesome top5 Miss you Joe. Hope you're doing good!
This movie is way too odd, dark and overtly sexual to be comparable to Merchant/Ivory 😂.
You don’t find M/I not overtly sexual??
You are subbed to the Real Housewives. I am better than you.
Malayalam movies are SOARING in 2024. Just saw manjummel boys, bramayugam just SUPERB.
They are my favorite region of Indian Cinema I think. I will check those both out. Thanks for watching.
@@JoeLaRocca this year is special. Every single month a new movie is rewriting the game and kerala, the small state has overtaken the might of bollywood to give the biggest gtossers. Just a dream run for them built on highest quality cinema.
The soundtrack at the start is UK82 by the Exploited.
AWESOME STUFF!
It's not swes ,it is swaadesh
it's"," not"_,"
The cinematographer for this movie "Hoyte van Hoytema" just won an Oscar for "Oppenheimer" . His work on this movie was excellent and gave him the recognition in Hollywood.
What are you new?
I tried reading the script. Got forty pages in and gave up. Pretty boring actually.
I watched this with my family when it was aired. I was nine at the time. Yep. That was my family.
I bet you will never forget it. Art is so cool!
@@JoeLaRocca I have it on VHS, and all the DVD versions, and BluRay. It's one of my favourite "horror" films, it's a visceral experience every time, never truly enjoyable, just an experience that renders one speechless after the credits roll.
there is a singapoure version in english too and they are sooooo cute!!!
One of my favorite movies of all time. I bought it on CZcams, and i re-watch it about twice a year. Movies like this are so rare. I love how they don't treat the viewer like we're dumb. They don't feel the need to explain everything, they just show certain things and allow you to ponder and come up with your own conclusion. A timeless masterpiece.
That outro made me smash the like button so hard
I first watched the accused when i was a teenager it was hard for me at times because how jodie character was being treated by people sadly this is how some survivors are treated in real life i rewatched the movie recently it's still as powerful as the first time i watched it kelly was actually offered the role of Sarah but turned it down due to what happened to her a few years prior she should had been nominated jodie totally deserved her win it's so heartbreaking what happened to the woman that the film is based on cheryl sadly she passed away a few years after what happened to her at age 25 years old
Jesus. This always seems like it is probably a very important film for people.
Tf was that bullshit at the end?
Oh yeah. I was learning. Some people dig it. But I have stopped. Don’t worry. You ever learn something new?
Originally it didn't have commercial because it was on the BBC which is a publicly funded ztation.
It was over two nights tho right?
From way down in Southern Australia we loved your review!
American Beauty was very very similar to this (check the Mother roles) but with added Black humour
American Beauty is also not good
@@JoeLaRocca hey all respect but i think they are both Award winning classic movies
Deserved ALL the Oscars and Accolades (Timothy BOTTOMS?)
Eh
It’s one of the best comedies I’ve seen in recent years! The dark humor and some of the fight sequences were right up my alley! 😂👍
So a bit of history about this movie and "the twist" (so called.) They're detailed in the history/true crime book "Say Nothing: A Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland" by Patrick Radden Keefe which is well worth checking out! In the original release in the UK and in Ireland, what was most shocking to viewers about The Crying Game were the politics of this film. It dared to be both sympathetic and critical of the IRA, at a time where many people there had lost loved ones in the conflict or knew people who had. I don't know if this was still going on in 1992, but I know that for a long time IRA leaders could not even be shown talking on TV in the UK - actors did voiceovers because the British government believed just having IRA people talk on TV would inspire terrorism. Also, as many people in Northern Ireland at least would likely have known, Steven Rea (guy who wrote this and played the main character) was in fact married to Dolours Price, who had been an active and violent member of the IRA and is believed to be responsible for several murders. She was definitely convicted of terrorist bombings. The violence you see in the Crying Game, is believed to have been inspired directly by her life experiences (and may reflect acts of violence she personally participated in.) In the political climate at the time, making a movie about (and possibly with assistance from) IRA members was taboo and definitely hit too close to home. People thought this should be a topic best swept under the rug and Steven Rea and Dolors Price should have kept quiet and not poked at old wounds. The fact that Jay is trans was not nearly supposed to be as shocking as this frank discussion of politics, and the fact that Fergus can't see her gender identity is symbolic of other things that have blinded him (like his belief system.) While it should have been handled better, there were definitely a lot of clues even before we meet Jay. That is why "the twist" is not really a twist for modern viewers - it was never supposed to be the most daring or shocking aspect of the film. However, US producers were concerned about the film being a box office bomb in North America as well. So they decided to really "sex it up" and that's when this idea of "the twist" came in. Instead of "here is a thoughtful film with queer main characters about a war no one really knows anything about" the pitch in the trailer was basically "YOU'LL NEVER GUESS WHO HAS A PEEN." The gambit worked (because of course) and it became a huge hit, helped by American comedians whose boomer humor jokes about this movie persist to this day. (I don't know if a lot of them even watched it, sadly.) So unfortunately these shitty jokes and "the twist" are now what the film is known for, and not for the way it addressed gender, conflict, and colonialism like very few films written at the time. Think about it: how many dramas with not two queer protagonists from the early 1990s exist, in which both of the characters end up 1) alive, 2) happy, and arguably even 3) together at the end. Even though Fergus is in jail, he does kind of deserve it in all fairness. (He's definitely kidnapped people and probably killed them, even though he was not guilty of the crime he was convicted of.) And he is free from his burden of guilt, having found a way to atone. Anyway, that's my TedTalk - "The Crying Game" is not a perfect movie by any means but a really interesting backstory, is an important part of film history, and I don't think it deserves to be ruined by transphobic shitheads from the 90s.
Wow great info. Sorry if I came off as ignorant. Education is king.
Movie was decent. I would have liked a little more story behind the main character. Also a small side story of how Lowell’s wife passed and what was up with the old burnt house with the photons in it? My guess is he blew the house up cooking meth accidentally. Also I would like a better ending to show if Lowell survived and if she made it back to her destination with the state police or if they blamed her for everything that happened. Was this originally a novel? If so I would like to know the Title so I can read it.
Where are the spoiler warnings asshole?
good job
The pizza he makes in this movie is something a homeless person would make.
Homeless people are making pizza in your city?
@@JoeLaRocca you can put chips on a pizza.
Been busy as hell, but I did catch this. Best theater film I saw in a while, as a person that likes the book. Greg Frasier is incredible. That relationship with the two leads is a change but I saw what it does for the film version. Religious commentary with the love story was my intellectual hook. Btw I don't watch these looking at Paul as the hero. In fact I knew it going in. So it was interesting to see what he chooses to become to protect his story vs the greater good.
My favorite movie of all time. Great review!
I was in this movie as an extra 😂. True story...I was originally cast to play Lynne (or was being set up to as I read all her lines and filmed some of those scenes...unless I was being used for setting up shots which is more likely). It was either Lynne herself or a producer who told my mum that I wasn't cast because they couldn't find another girl that looked like me to play the sister. So I was still involved as an extra and for shot set ups. In retrospect it now makes sense why she wanted 2 girls who looked alike lol. So that started my interest in filmmaking. Its crazy to think what Lynne has achieved since maing this and where she is now.
Wow. You are a celebrity to me. Like o say in the review it is one of the best short films I’ve ever seen. And I’ve watched a bunch.
I saw it in my early 20s and it was a well kept secret before seeing it. It was a surprise in the theater, but Jaye Davidson was such a good actor the movie worked all the way through. Everybody was excellent. And it was not just ahead of it time, The Crying Game made its times.

@@JoeLaRocca love you too
Worst movie ever made hands down terrible opinion.
Oh cool
Another similar movie is modern romance!!!! Can't believe heartbreak kid is not an influence
Pecan pie scene is hilarious
I really like the just hanging out vibe from your video. I liked this movie and just watched it for a second time. It's actually refreshing in a weird way to see bullying portrayed like this. Then along with the awkward knowing feel from the film, the lack of edits to your video feel real as well. ❤
I have this film listed as one of my Top Four on Letterbxed. I think it has to do more with when I saw this film, rather the Film itself. If that makes sense. It hit me hard, and has stayed with me ever since.
Johnny Depp stole the movie. He was the best thing about it. A convoluted, hard to follow plot/plots but like you said, enjoyable for the escapism. Mickey Rourke and Willem Dafoe wasted/underused. If not for Depp I wouldn't have made it through though.
misprint made me laugh
Here is a blurb to help today’s younger viewers better understand this movie: “Casablanca is in French Morocco. When France surrendered in WW2, it was divided in half. The Northern half under the direct control of the Germans the other half "nominally" independent under the French in Vichy. French Morocco was also under the control of the Vichy government and thus was technically independent so that the Germans had to operate with French consent. It was all a formality, of course, as the French consent was usually rubber stamped.” As for the timing of this movie, Germany had quickly defeated France and on June 14, 1940, the German troops entered and occupied Paris. This movie Casablanca is set a year and a half later on December 1, 1941. This was a week before America is attacked at Pearl Harbo and entered the war against Japan and Germany. I first saw this during WW2 and believe the reason that it became such an instant classic was that the theme and story truly hit a nerve with the audience members back then. Everyone there identified with the story because, in 1942, the war in Europe and the Pacific was going full blast with the outcome of both was still in doubt. Suddenly husbands and wives, young men and their lovers were being forcibly separated by the war and the draft. If your immediate family was not affected, then many of your neighbors had people either at war, killed or wounded. An element of this film that made it so suspenseful was the love triangle between Rick, Ilsa and Victor. Normally in a Hollywood movie two of the people, the leading man and the girl are obviously meant to end up together. The third character is always shown with some flaw or attitude that makes them an unsuitable mate. In Casablanca, all three leading characters are shown to be equally heroic and desirable choices. Thus making it more difficult for the theater audience to decide who should end up flying off together and who should be the one left behind. Writing a suitable script ending that would satisfy both the Hays Office (the U.S. film studio Self-censorship Organization) and the theater audience must have been very difficult. Cortiz got an Oscar for directing this picture. The flowing movement of the Camera, with its closeups and tracking, and the constant motion of the Actors are like a carefully rehearsed Ballet. Notice how the Actors and the movie Extras are always moving around and how the scenes smoothly flow from one event to another with few cuts and fadeouts. Watch how the movie literally starts with a ‘Bang’ and the Camera keeps you glued to the screen leading up to the Flashback with Rick and Ilsa. The first 10 or 15 minutes seems like one long shot. It is rarely mentioned, but the Editing of the movie was excellent. In 1942, this movie was well received by the Black Community. It was praised by being one of the first films that portrayed a black man not as a stereotype but as an important character in the story.
