Welcome, my name is Dena & this channel is a little glimpse into my DIY life.
I love sharing simple DIYs and home decorating all the way to really large DIY construction projects such as self building our dream home (& everything in between)!
Before starting this channel, we spent 17 years designing, renovating, and decorating homes, (& moving 17 times) we were homesick & really missed our families. We decided to sell our home, walk away from a dream job, schools, & give it all up to move back home and raise our children near family! BEST decision of our lives! We purchased vacant land & put all our construction and DIY skills to the test by designing and building the cottage, all DIY for a budget of $70K (in 2017)and the rest is history!
If you love home decor trying your hand at all kinds of DIY, be sure to hit that subscribe button and follow along as I share how to build a beautiful life one DIY at a time!
Reupholstering 12 Dining Chairs (learning how to upholster and make double welt)
Welcome back to Fletcher Creek Cottage!
While we have been busy building our DIY dream home, I've also been collecting a lot of one of a kind antiques and furniture for the new home. I recently found a massive dining table with 10 side chairs and 2 captain's chairs on Facebook Marketplace but I didn't love the fabric and I decided to do something about it. Follow along as I learn how to reupholster 12 dining chairs and make double welt for the first time! I love how the chairs turned out and can't wait to see them in our new home once it's finished:)
I did a lot of research before starting this project because I'd never done upholstery quite like this before and had helpful tips from Mimzy @MimzyandCompany! Be sure to checkout her CZcams channel for all kinds of DIY upholstery project tutorials.

How To Stencil A Wall To Look Like Wallpaper!!!
Hi I’d love to know about the staple gun you’re using!
Brilliant work. Instructions are top notch. What screws are used to tie windows and what are they holding against?
Where did you purchase the fabric?
Love this! Where did you purchase your fabric from?
Are you cleaning the stencil every time you take it off?
Hi there! What type of hooks did you use to hang your curtains?
great video very informative i just have two questions, why do you have to wash the fabric first? and why did you count along 5 spaces when inserting the hooks
This has me excited to try these out for our new home!! Thanks for sharing!
OMG THEY HAVE A FLOWER ROOM. id die. Seriously. Id be in Heaven. And you know they had a greenhouse or solarium originally im sure
Wow the carved crown molding is spectacular. It absolutely just breaks my heart all the architecture and old 1800s homes in detroit that are rotting and have rotted to the ground.
Oh man i love architectural salvage places. Almost got a job working w a man who goes in to demolish or remove pieces prior to their destruction. I got some of the coolest things from him just by stopping to check out the old 1800s house he was working on in my town i used to live in.... he let me take an amazing double basin oorcelain kitchen sink with the slats for a drain on the side, and a bunch of antiques out of the house. Wish i would have pursued the job. He said he had been given an old house someone was gonna demolish so he just moved it and now he sticks all the things he gets from other cleanout jobs in it. Killed me when i lost his number
So beautiful and such quality work, as usual! I'm sure you are excited to see them in place in your new home.
Yes, thank you...I sure am!
Awesome job on quite a project! They turned out beautiful!!
Thanks a bunch!
This my favorite CZcams channel. Keep up the great work❤
Wow, thanks!
Awesome work, I have two chairs that I will start upholstering too this spring and I can’t wait to use you methods. Thank you so much, I really don’t want to spend $950 get them done by a pro plus I have to by the fabric too.
Thank you so much! Glad it was helpful!
How tall did you do the walls?
Great job on this project!
I don’t think I’ve ever loved anyone more! Omg! ❤ I’ve got to try that. If the drapes had a liner, one could basically follow this too? Big savings for sure! 👍
How long did you wait for concrete to cure?
Ttm
Love the lamp, a wonderful way to update your find. Thanks for the referral for the furniture covers, I’m definitely going to do some searching that website. Merry Christmas to you and your family, hope you all take a few days to just enjoy each other🎄☃️🎄☃️🎄☃️🎄☃️🎄☃️🎄☃️🎄☃️
Hi. I have seen we’re someone had painted the inside of the lampshade in gold to reflect a good glow 😊
What a huge relief for you! I can't wait to see how much you are able to do during the winter. Beautiful home in beautiful Michigan! Keep up the great work. (Impatient people don't understand the process and value of waiting for good things. Don't be discouraged by those that don't get it.)
Wow, it's amazing what all you and your family have accomplished. Beautiful!
So pretty with the snow!!
Just a suggestion, if you clip your purchased garland at the top of the doorway and turn the left side over, both sides will drape down the same way instead of one side flowing neatly downward and the other side kind of splaying out. What a beautiful property you have.
Love that idea! Thank you!
Beautiful! Would love to see the chicken coop decorated! You honestly are living my dream life here in England my dream is to have at least 1 acre of land and a little chicken coop and vegetable patch just like yours
That sounds wonderful! I would LOVE to own a period property over by you (we're taking our first trip to France soon, but my dream is to own a property in the english countryside to live in part time!
I love your content...your garland on the fence looks so beautiful as does your garland on the front porch! ❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
So fun to see it all coming together over time! And yay for getting it enclosed before winter. ❄️ You guys are doing an amazing job! ❤
This is my favourite video I've ever seen on youtube!
Really nice to see your ICF home getting weathered in. Can I ask what drove your decision to go with Marvin windows? We are about to begin building our ICF home soon. Windows are among the MANY items we are considering. We are located in Tennessee, so is Marvin. Makes sense for us to buy local. Don't attention to the comments about your build taking too long. We spent almost 3 years looking for an ICF builder. Got fed up with it and we will be DIYing it. We have everything else done like well, septic, drain field, electric power, etc. Just have to build the home and shop. Best of luck going forward!
Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging comment! I really appreciate that! Yes, we chose our Marvin windows because our architect highly recommended them to us when we told him we'd be building ICF at our initial meeting. He is very knowledgeable and after researching windows, that was the best choice for us. Windows were very important to us and we're very happy with Marvin! They are phenomenal for ease of installation in ICF...so you'll really appreciate that if you decide to install them yourself:) All the best moving forward with your build...sounds like you are well on your way! Keep up the good work! PS...we lived in TN for a few years...beautiful place!
Did you have to use special fasteners to fasten the window nailing fin to the fox buck? We are currently building an ICF house by ourselves also. Thanks !
Some windows are more compatible with ICF that others. We used the manufacture's instructions for installation with our specific windows and ICF Fox Blocks. Your ICF sales rep and/or your architect should be able to give you installation information for your windows. `We used SST wafer head construction screws/fasteners to attach the nailing flange to the ICF buck (hitting the webbing/stud in the buck).
Building a home yourself and minimizing the use of subcontractors may result in cost savings and ensure greater quality control, but the value of "delayed gratification" does reach a point of diminishing returns. Even though this is being completed without borrowing, there are carrying costs. Also, the clock on the economic lifespan of the initial components of the structure is ticking. I'm not factoring the value you're receiving from your CZcams channel, but no residential build should take more than 2 years--even if a homeowner loves the building process--which you seem to. Love the house--but Michigan is too cold for me!
Love to watch the progress!
On your site you state your budget is $70K. How is that possible? 40 windows alone will run in the 30k range for cheap windows. Is there some place I can see your itemized budget?
HI, the budget you are thinking of that refers to 70K is NOT the house we are currently building. We built a cottage for only $70K and that was back in 2017 before the price increase of all materials happened in 2020. Our dream house is currently the home we are building and I have not shared a budget for that.
how did you make the big one? just by taking the back of the sweater and then sewing it to be in the same shape as the arm?
Are you using Invisalign, looks like some "buttons" on your teeth....I went through that and it is so awesome!
Yes, I am and I'm almost finished with my 9 month treatment! Woohoo!
YAY YOU! @@FletcherCreekCottage Best thing I ever did and sooooo easy!!
I don't know why I waited so long! Totally agree, it's been a breeze and it's flown by@@PWallace23
So easy and informative, New subbie here
Thanks for subbing!
2:40 why did you cut to match the joint below? Everything ive read says to stagger the joints.
Every block should be staggered except when making the common /vertical seam. What you see at 2:40 is me cutting a common/vertical seam in the wall. Each common seam is braced/strapped together with 2x4s on both sides of the blocks before the pour. Fox Blocks ICF website is a great recourse to learn more about vertical seams and when they are needed in a wall. Hope that helps:)
@@FletcherCreekCottage thanks! I knew you had a reason!
Good day to you and yours Can’t say how much I have learned from your videos and your basement build as well as the rest of your build I do have question. Where did you get the floor joist hangers for the basement and what was the procedure for installation Thank you in advance Keenan
Looks like a British stately house, gorgeous
So fun! Great job. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much!:)
Beautiful mantle. I think the limestone is too rustic for the mantle. You need a refined formal finish for it. I love your idea of the stove in it. Very vintage.
So much sand 😳 is that normal for that area? Seems crazy to me. You don't see anything like that here in Central PA. I just listened to you on Lisa's podcast. I'm glad to have another channel to follow! What a neat journey!
Hi and welcome:) We live relatively close to the Lake Mi Shoreline and while there is great farmland all around us, there is also areas that are very hilly and sandy. We are within an hour drive of many ski resorts (huge hills) and the Sleeping Brea Dunes. So we have a mix of great soil, sand, clay and some rock...but our land is sandy where we chose to build our home.
Very beautifully done!
Thank you so much 😀
I really appreciate how you carefully explained all the steps involved in building this chicken coop! Great job, it looks fabulous and it will be extremely useful to your family.👍
Thanks so much!
Great video! Glad to see that our SDPW deflector screws could work for your project. Excited to see it all coming together.
The SDPW deflector screws made my job so easy, no ladder to move around was the best part! Thank you!
Thank you for this. Needing to do new curtains
Glad it was helpful!
Beautiful room you did. Very calming
Absolutely amazing and beautiful! My birth father who died two years a girl built something on a smaller about half the size in his yard. They live in california and sharon joy it. I just want to say way to go this is awesome
