Why bigger subwoofers are better
@DIYAudioGuy made a very cool experiment, he measured single 12, dual 8 and four 6.5in ported subwoofers. I was very interested in the data, so asked Justin if he don't mind sharing the measurements.

    I see you don't have any low level "random computer buzzing" type noise which does not increase with the volume control. This is when I connect my old Kenwood amp to speaker or RCA outputs, with resistive voltage dividers. Yes I am a technician! I suspect I have noise from the car electronics being superimposed onto the head unit supply. Good to see that not all these head units do this! Fantastic video, very clearly presented.

    I have a 2017 Canyon Extended Cab and it is a pain to get loud low. I sold my VXF setup and am running a cheap setup while I finish my new enclosure, just finished doing the electrical. My current box is supposed to be tuned at 36hz, 2 cube, single 12" SVR I have heard the resonant frequency is around 41hz and I do get a big jump around 42 but continues too get louder until about 49hz, I cut it off at around 70-80hz. It will get to 30hz with the windows down but it is noticeably quieter and 29hz is just too quiet for music. I plan on putting a 5k amp in and was leaning towards a single 15 or maybe a pair of 12s and tune in the 28-32hz range but think I will probably waste most of my power fighting the small cab. I have had so many people swearing I need to stick with 8s or 10s lately but I just feel like the 15 is the better route even if i tune a bit high than I like to take advantage of the acoustics.

    The only thing I do not like about having small subwoofers is that they have to move a lot to compensate like a bigger one and that extra movement leads to more harmonic distortion and danger of ripping soft parts. Unless you use a whole bunch of the small ones together but that sure is a lot of magnet weight in comparison to only one big subwoofer and magnet that’s for sure. My dream Subwoofer is a rectangular 15” x 30”.

    I didn't click Justin's video when it came out because I assumed it was "clickbait". I know he tries and he is very honest about his testing methods, but he also knows the best way to get clicks without needing too much content. I will continue to use the largest subwoofer(s) I can fit in my vehicle taking into account compromises with the space I am willing to give up. I'm glad the industry offers a variety of options but as of today I have seen no need to step down to a 6.5".

    Just admit the measurements are not done right 😂. Its got nothing to do with the car to a very large degree and most cars and or vans start to load from 80hz and generally flattens out. Thats why brands use High Q nonsense.. Justin something is wrong with your setup in Rew and the mic or you have a filter on the dsp. You can load a 4" or a single 6 inch and get a better looking graph, take care.

    • @JasonWW2000
      @JasonWW2000 Před 2 hodinami

      @@The-Sound-Guy I've done a ton of RTA measurements over many years, but it's always been my own vehicles (sedan, suv) so I have a limited amount of experience. Looking at his graphs, it looks like the truck peaks around 60hz. That sounds about right. It seems he's got no cabin gain, though. I don't know what that particular vehicles response curve should look like. There's always a chance that there's an issue with this microphone or the REW software settings. I think Justin should take a sealed sub and fire out of an open door to get a free air response curve. Then put that enclosure in the backseat, close up the truck and do another response curve. This way we can actually see the effect of the vehicle.

    • @JasonWW2000
      @JasonWW2000 Před 2 hodinami

      He's also got a homemade electrical RTA so he can see the signal going in to and out of the amplifier. I do as well and sometimes it reads incorrectly the signal coming off of the head unit, but reads properly on the output of the amp. It probably has something to do with signal impedance. Anyway, this would allow him to verify that there's a flat signal coming out of the amp. I don't know if he's using his dsp and everything is set flat. The above test should tell us that. I've also noticed that using pink noise isn't the best option for frequencies under a 100 Hz. I think setting REW to measure peak SPL and then using a sine wave sweep might be more accurate. It's also possible he may just have to do a lot of tweaking to bring down those upper frequencies and boosting the lower frequencies to get the kind of frequency response he's looking for.

    Nigerus (raw-cat) done brought the public knowledge to a whole level where a average knowledge guy like myself doesn't have to be lost or guess to I feel it is right but still don't really know. Alot of top guys give you little bits and breadcrumbs even though someone taught them and you still chase the dream of your hard earned equipment is playing the best you made it and you getting the real listening enjoyment you expected or come close. I blame manufacturers putting out products like dsp, dsp amps and vehicle integration stuff and have nothing uploaded at the time of purchase of installation, tips and why and what the products should be doing at the moment of install and have a video showing what dsp and vehicle integration equipment is not doing when you install wrong like when using their gizmos when installing a radio and the steering wheel controls not working. Where to grab the power wires when the integration stuff needs key or constant 12v, lil stuff like that goes a super duper long way. I got navtv stuff in my srx cadillac and supposed to mirror my android for my apps and play videos when I'm ready but nothing pops up. No fuses blown I feel I followed directions but it is always a sketchy part in the directions when it comes to integration equipment. Spent big money on the zapco dsp but for some reason the spdif input is not putting out sound and you can't get in touch with no one who knows anything, you would think zapco would have tech team videos up showing the installation and use of their products and not just them all the big boys in the game instead of showing a cool install and saying go buy it cause it enhances your system. I dig just as good in simpler times with a in dash eq from back in the day that is a dam shame

They have some other models that are larger that do exceptionally well, their midbass drivers are also really good but not always ideal for automotive (not in doors) and they are typically non coated wood pulp/paper. if you want to go up a level and money isnt a barrier have a look into the scan speak revelator and illiminator lines they are really high end but performance matches. the ScanSpeak Illuminator D3004/6600 AirCirc are pretty exceptional they do all the airy sparkle stuff but are listen to all day non fatiguing, the D3004/6020 & D2004/6020 are physically smaller and would do better physically in an automotive setup with limited space.
