'Watership Down', Chapter 19: Fear in the Dark
A strange and terrible voice causes panic...
Author's note:
1. Vagabond - Bigwig's word is 'hlessil', which I have rendered in various places in the story as wanderers, scratchers, vagabonds. A 'hlessi' is a rabbit living in the open, without a hole. Solitary bucks and unmated rabbits who are wandering do this for quite long periods especially in summer. Bucks do not usualy dig much in any case, although they will scratch shallow shelters or make use of existing holes where these are available. Real digging is done by the most part by does preparing for litters.
2. 'Zorn' means 'finished' or 'destroyed', in the sense of some terrible catastrophe.

I agree on your voice dramatization. It gives variance to the narration, but you do it subtly and not "over the top" where it could distract or irritate. I hope you plan on continuing the story through completion.

Want to say you really conjure Bigwig very well. Your vocals bring into insightful relief aspects of his nature that were, for me, more 2-dimensional on the page. Bigwig was my favorite when i read this as a kid. The woolly bulwark!-- rough-and-ready, reliable, and indispensable physical protector of Fiver's refugees. Readers fight alongside him. Hearing him through your work in this series has granted me insight into Bigwig's mind, in this part especially. He's like Banquo: an unabashed battler nevertheless humble enough to serve others, who maintains this balance largely through acceptance of his limitations-- in knowledge and otherwise-- coupled with a healthy, fearful respect towards what's unknown. Thanks again for making/sharing a canon-worthy narration! 🐰🎉

Thanks for this great comment! He is like Banquo, and lots of other strong characters in literature you're right - happy to be led by a leader they're fiercely loyal to. Bigwig is my favourite too. In fact, his type of character is often a favourite for me - it's an honourable, positive kind of masculinity that needs celebrating!

Thanks for making this video! A really useful refresher for tomorrow's exam! What my views on the poem: Personally, i think the repetition of "judge" is a reference to the parable of the sheep and goats and judgement day. The fire imagery in stanza 5 is a reference to purgatory-perhaps the man's heart is also being refined like her heart. God judges both the man and woman and chooses the woman for her purity. For me, the fact that "Oh my love" is in brackets might show she is ashamed of her earthly love, while, because "Oh my God" is not in brackets, shows she is not ashamed of being devoted to God, pouring her heart into her religion. Could we link all the references to the "singing-bird" and "singing" to "A Birthday"?

excellent interpretation. helpful to me as a student. she sees and expresses herself in terms that happen to have elements of her faith, but yet, the poem itself is not necessarily about her faith - aspects of her faith come through- are probably also more recognizable for those of similar faith. Door poem indeed :)

Thank you. I agree, in poetry, ambiguity like this broadens the possible readings and increases the chance that a reader will find a way to find something in it that resonates for them. It can also allow a poem to speak beyond the era in which it's written. I find the same with song lyrics; which are poetry too, of course 😊

Interesting to Google this event as there are lots of archive photographs (and some film) from what was clearly a very important moment for the people of Corfu and wider Greece. Sadly, you don't get the same sense of chaos from them as Durrell described, however...

I felt squeamish at Gerry watching the butchering of the bull. Would I have let my own sons see this at that age? - absolutely not. However, I suppose my reaction shows how far removed from the food that we eat we have become so I will take the criticism. As for the 3 Eagle Owl chicks and the shooting of the sparrows whilst a guest who wanted to set up an RSPCA equivalent in Corfu was there for tea - typical Durrells bringing chaos to the situation!

How much freedom Gerry was given to roam the island and follow his passion. Can you imagine a 10 year old boy being given such a free reign in today's world? Different times. Even as a child myself growing up on the remote Lincolnshire coast my brother and I would pack up a jam sandwich and a bottle of water and disappear for the whole day during weekends and school holidays. We gained a lot from it as did Gerry. Today's children- not so much I am afraid.

There aren't as many glimpses into Corfiot life as one might expect - there's this chapter, and the earlier one on St Spiridion's day (when Margot kisses his feet!) and the arrival of King George in the final book, but not many other big set pieces. Otherwise it's the family or small interactions with locals like the Rose Beetle Man. I like the Corfiot bits too.
