At least he didn’t say, “weener dog”. 🤮 Dox-hoont. Try it. It’s pretty easy: Dox-hoont. Dachshund is the German word for for “badger hound”. Many (most?) dogs with a long back and short legs succumb to spondylosis of the spine before advanced age. This condition usually causes paralysis of the hind quarters. The dog’s rear legs no longer work and urinary and bowel control is lost. It is a painful condition - at onset, extremely so. Of the three Dachshunds we had, Gus lived the longest: 13 years, 2 months. All three succumbed to this awful malady and were euthanized. Strapping a paraplegic dog into a two-wheeled cart, carrying him outside for relief and cleaning-up his “accidents” for the rest of what time he had left was not an option for me. He would have been miserable as would I. Such extreme measures are more often done to satisfy a human than improve the dog’s life. Although we’ve owned doorknobs with a higher I.Q., we later loved a brace of Basset Hound sisters (littermates) that also fell victim to this awful condition - one after only 7 years while the other recovered partial use of her hindquarters and survived a few, more years. The Dachshund is a GREAT companion. The Basset Hound is a nice family dog if not the brightest “lamp in the chandelier”. Ours each had a pedigree as long as a roll of toilet paper with nary a champion on it. In memory of Gustav von Alphonso, CDX, HB-180493 😞

The paws are massive and webbed. Could not believe how fast and efficiently he could dig a hole if he detected underground critter activity. Built to dig. So perfectly engineered for the jobs they were meant to do. The cuddling and snuggling are a bonus. Oh, man, can they cuddle!

After a lifetime of big dogs a dachshund wandered into my life. A charming longhaired. I had a lot to learn. Budlee has been a patient and loving teacher. All my dogs have been good ones but this little beast is so intelligent it's eerie. I have great respect for his opinion of people. If you're sketchy he knows it and makes sure I know it, too. He's been known to back people right out the door they came in thru. Very loudly. They curse the dumb dog but Bud's human friends know exactly what he's doing and there is nothing dumb about it. I have blessed with a very wise companion. I was so offended by a stupid neighbor thinking Bud was just a small and brainless yappy dog and not the highly specialized hound he is. Totally dismissed him, as he totally dismissed her as just another brainless yappy female human.

When it comes to stairs carry them up and down, but , so they don't beat you to it install the type of baby gates that unlatch and swing open...top and bottom of stairs... My Ol Schmoe lost the use of his rear legs from stairs when he was only 6, and we had to put a diaper on him because he couldn't control his bladder. My wife thought we should put him down but i said no!...i will try everything first...Laser treatment was new at that time so we tried that...and a month later while we were watching tv...here comes Schmoe walking right past us...a little wobbly at first but he completely healed, because we continued a monthly treatment for him...We got 17 memorable loving years out of Ol Poolhall Schmoe!...What a Blessing he was...🥰

Dachshunds usually love to play Tug-of-War. It imitates what they do when they are hunting badgers and rabbits. They go into the den, grab a hold (bite) of the badgers or rabbits nose or tail, and then pull it out backwards. / B.

One of the most important things abou them, while being funny, cute and cuddly sweethearts for their people they can be mean mother truckers towards other dogs and animals. A dog that was used for hunting badgers(also vicious animals) can inflict serious injuries.
