The Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Department hosts an annual “Christmas Basket Program” where firefighters pick up donated food, porch to porch, in the Hillsboro area and donate them to those less fortunate. They sound the fire whistle to commemorate the start of food pickups every year, so MOX, Chandler and I went out to see it do its thing, and we were later joined by Chris. Because this siren is not hooked up with the tornado siren system, it is normally not tested, so this is the only time of the year it has a scheduled activation. After this, we raced to Raymond to attempt the P-15 for their 7 PM pager test… but the test was cancelled last minute due to a car accident. Nevertheless I am very glad to have documented this oddity in south-central Illinois and it’s a nice siren to see if you’re looking for something that only goes once a year. Enjoy the video!

I was outside my house catching the ambience of their sirens that day. Sometimes this particular siren misses the cancellation tones and goes off for 3 minutes. So when I hear the thing go off for more than 3 minutes, I knew something was not right. Sure did alot on the batteries after running for 10 minutes straight. Most of you that caught this likely dident notice but around 10 minutes later, I hear the rest of the sirens fire up for about 5 seconds then shut off. And thats when this one finally shut off. They litterly had to send out alert tones again and briefly activate the other 3 sirens and then send out cancellation tones to shut this one off. im not sure why they sent out alert tones again when they could have just sent out cancellation tones again without sending alert tones first. Either way, it made for a really interesting catch. Nice video!

They are called weather radios. In the United States and Canada they can be utilized for weather emergencies such as tornado warnings, flash flood warnings or severe thunderstorm warnings as well as civil emergencies such as hazardous chemical spills or AMBER Alerts. In Mexico, they can be used to alert the public of earthquakes as part of the SASMEX system. If you have any more questions feel free to ask!

Do you just set them up to the same station?
For the most part yeah, I do have a majority of my radios set to my main station (KZZ65 Bloomington). I have 4 other radios I use to monitor weather radio channels outside of my area (WXJ75, WXK24, WXJ71, WXJ76) but I have it so that none of these radios will activate for warnings issued within my transmitter listening area which consists of 4 counties.
Always thought that mechanical hi-lo was cool, kinda fun to hear it warbling all around. Reminds me of a Q2B siren on a fire engine, if it had a hi-lo tone (which admittedly would be awesome)
