Prebuilt Split Keyboards Aren't Overpriced
Featuring the Kaly42, a DIY split mechanical keyboard! Building your own keyboard can be less expensive than buying a prebuilt board, but you miss out on nice features, and (depending on skill level) get a lower quality keyboard. Basically, you get what you pay for.

    $600 for a split keyboard 😂 I’ll stick with my $20 Logitech TYVM! 🤣 My computer didn’t cost that much! P.S. I had to lookup what RSI means. I don't think I have that after 12 years as a Software Engineer, but my typing speed tops out at around 70 kpm, so maybe that has something to do with it? I have had mild soreness in my forearm on rare occasion, but it usually resolves within a day or so with some massage and stretches. I also use a thumb trackball mouse.

    I have been looking into split boards but I don't think my brain can rewire to adapt. I feel like I will take a very long time to adapt. Does the transition from standard KB to split KB easy ... does it take along time to adjust? I fear that I buy (I have never touch one) one I wont be able to use it, does it take long to get used to it? I'm really wondering what you would think about the Charybdis keyboard or the Dactyl Manuform with trackball (sometimes called Tractyl Manuform). I wonder how you would feel using it as a "mouse replacement" or at least as a supplement and how it would contribute to a more keyboard-centric workflow.

  • @egorsencha2428

    Why do you ignore the option of a dactyl manuform? I know you chose kinesis advantage over moonlander due to the "curve" in the keyboard, so dactyl got you covered in this aspect, plus you can (and should) approach to desiding thumbcluster, from choosing trackball/encoder to tilt ange, key count etc. It does have it's drawbacks of harder layout customization and is a harder challenge overall, but seems the best option, taking into accout the range of customization. The only drawback i see is questionable acoustics in most default builds, as it is quite hollow, but I am sure it can be improved.

    I do electronics work on the side. If you can adjust the screws just right, you can cut a small plastic (or metal) tube the right length and put the screws through it and lightly tighten against the tube. That will keep the height stable. I'm still watching the video, but I thought that might be helpful. I do the same sort of thing with leads coming off of components like resistors on a circuit board to prevent shorts.

  • @HalfMonty11
    @HalfMonty11 Před 18 dny

    I really love the board, the design, the company and the owner. BUT, I just want to provide a warning to others I wish I knew because it's a hefty chunk of money. Like any one size fits all product, it's design to fit most hands. I just happen to not fit that well and so in my case, even after using it for a year... I just never got fully comfortable and it hurt my wpm and error rate. My issue is, that while I have large hands, I have large palms and shorter fingers apparently than average. What this does is change the reach-ability of the keys due to the keywell. So I had to constantly move my hands to hit keys and thumb keys and the keywell really needs the wrist rest and hovering wrist at that height is just not realistic through a whole day. Idk, I was distraught that I was immediately faster and less error prone when I switched to another non-keywell keyboard bc I wasted a lot of money and a year of trying to use it. But my experience seems to be rare.

    Sure they're overpriced, but these niche products are by default overpriced since they don't benefit from economies of scale. • @HalfMonty11
    @HalfMonty11 Před 25 dny

    I really really really wanted to love my glove 80. I've daily driven it for over a year and despite that, I never could get my wpm back to where it was before the glove80 and I had a pretty high mistype rate. I always felt I had to constantly adjust my hand position which put pressure on my wrists. I kept with it, telling myself I just needed more time with it... but once I realized it had been a year, I came to my senses and realized it just isn't working for me. I really think it's just a me problem. My hands might just not be suited for it. I have large hands but most of the size is in my palms, not my fingers. So just hitting all the normal alpha keys in the keywell just was always a bit of a stretch rather than comfortable. I just recently switched to my old Atreus that I hadn't touched in a very long time and within 30 minutes I was already typing 10wpm faster than the glove80 I had been using daily. So if you have "normal" hands, I bet the glove80 will be great, just for me, flat boards without the keywell seems to be better. I would say, learning a restricted key layout that uses layers, sure it is a bit of a time investment but I've found it to be incredibly rewarding. A 34 key ferris is about as small as I think is reasonable but you also never have to stretch or move your hand, it can stay comfortably put and for me is the key to preventing RSI.

    I really wish someone made just a simple membrane split keyboard so the layout would get popular. No matter how superior the layout is, most people just won't be spending that much money on keyboards, because they probably don't even have that much to spend on a keyboard. It's a shame.

    • @SaltyMaud
      @SaltyMaud Před 21 dnem

      They're not expensive because of the switches. Switches for a 36 key build can easily be under 15€, even cheaper. These are expensive because they are a low volume niche product that requires a lot of labor to build, use hobbyist components and require custom fabrication. To get the price down, you need to design one for mass production.

    • @pepavasata6790
      @pepavasata6790 Před 21 dnem

      @@SaltyMaud That's what I'm saying, just take a 60% keyboard, split into two, and do column stagger instead of row stagger. They're a niche product because $300 keyboards are a niche product. If ergonomic mice can be bought for like $10, I can't see why you couldn't get a membrane split keyboard for like $40. (300% price increase over just a random membrane board)

    • @SaltyMaud
      @SaltyMaud Před 21 dnem

      @@pepavasata6790 You need to convince some keyboard manufacturer that there is enough demand for such a product to tool up for mass production then. But for the love of all that thocks, don't make a membrane keyboard in 2024, the cost of mechanical switches is trivial.

    I don’t know where the shift key is on the voyager, but on a traditional keyboard you aren’t supposed to use the opposite hand to press shift (like if I want to do a capital “A” the. I should be pressing shift with my right hand). That should make the “anchoring” while typing a nonissue

  • @cynvision
    @cynvision Před 28 dny

    After typing on offset keys for so long these column layouts, I'm just not sure at my age I'd adapt very fast. Also sounds a little silly to say to the consumer coming with a user qualm, "Eh, f-it, we've studied it to death" where other keyboards failed because they're time consuming to adjust. Maybe a 3-D printed little handle pressure fit to the foot would help spin it a bunch of times. The mounting idea just blows my brain. They don't need tenting for superusers if they're building their own chair stands. Are you then using eye-tracking for mouse movements?

    So the Moonlander was great, "except" it caused you RSI. So, the ONLY (not only, but bear with me), feature that an "ergonomic" keyboard must have, the Moonlander actually fails? How am I supposed to spend the hefty price tag on an ergonomic keeb, plus the inconvenience of having to get used to it, if I am not getting the supposed advantage, which is... ergonomy?

    Some minor corrections: - The different light thing is because the colors being used aren't actually the same - The software "buckets" different ranges of colors into a the same name since otherwise you would need a gazillion names to account for all the different hex-codes - If you copy the specif code being used, you should get the same color. - The layering/colemak thing is possible but I see others have already commended/you're aware.

    im not a programmer. i mostly game. i use a periloot caravel for my left hand. Its ergonomics are the hands down best because the section of the board where control+shift+tilde+z are located is sunk down and the rest of the board is sloped tilted up to the right. the thumb cluster is also positioned below C+V (below as in under row and also below as in sunken down) allowing for most natural thumb positioning. If i were motivated and smart enuff id figure out a way to make a whole dactyl keeb like the periloot caravel + wireless with bazillon battery life
