Just a thought here. Gamers like to play with NAT settings in a router as they think/asume that if games show that nat is 'strict', that they get a higher latency. What happens is they put their internal ip as the DMZ behind the router/firewall on the edge of their network. If this is true, it is not to hard to asume that the same person will deactivate the windows firewall and that therefor all windows ports are open to his public IP. It then comes down to knowing how to login to the device to get access to RPC. I mean, IT forensics also needs to look at the protections that were (or were not) in place at the moment of attack. I mean, if it's an incomming connection, it's clearly not a trojan calling out.
