The staggering health improvements from bike commuting
Welcome Shifter Big Stories, sponsored by Riese & Müller.
This is the first in a series of videos to delve into bigger, deeper and more important issues around urban cycling and bike commuting.
To kick off this series, I wanted to start with something that has an impact on everybody: Health and wellness. And everybody knows that riding a bike is good for you. But when I started looking more deeply at the positive health outcomes of transportation cycling, I didn't believe the numbers. And it's not just physical health. Riding a bike is good for your mental health and even your social connections as well.
A big thanks to Riese & Müller for sponsoring this year's Big Stories. In this video, I was riding the Riese & Müller Packster 70 - it's so fun and smooth to ride, and it hauls huge loads easily: www.r-m.de/en-pt/bikes/packster-70/

I don’t really do proper product reviews, but here are some products that I’ve tried on this channel that I like. (Of course, you don’t need anything fancy to ride a bike, other than a bike, but these are Amazon affiliate links, and I get paid a small commission if you buy them 😉)
• If you ride a bike in the city, you need a good lock. Litelok is a good option: us.litelok.com/SHIFTER
• If you wear a helmet and like to be well-lit, consider the Lumos: ridelumos.com/shifter
• Hindsight sunglasses have mirrors so you can see behind you while you ride. Plus, they look good: collabs.shop/f9hvof
• Love these RedShift Acrlight Smart LED Pedals: redshiftsports.com/collections/arclight-pedals?aff=40
• Crane Bicycle Bell (the ding is sublime): amzn.to/48gsHQ2
• Bicycle Cargo Net (why did it take so long for me to buy one of these?): amzn.to/31s1Ovu

Bike mechanic reacts to viewer tips for keeping bicycles running smoothly

Several weeks ago, I asked members of the Shifter community for tips on keeping a bike running smoothly. And you delivered! Hundreds of very thoughtful tips rolled in. But in reading them, I realized many of you know a lot more about bike maintenance than I do, so I decided to ask an expert for help in assessing them. Arleigh Greenwald, also known as @CargoBikeLifecom, agreed to join in with he...
130-year-old bicycle vs brand-new modern bike
zhlédnutí 61KPřed měsícem
I've often wondered why, after a century of innovation, modern bicycles look so similar to the ones that people rode in the 1890s. After all the innovations in the world since that time, why haven't we improved on the bicycle? That question drove me to compare a brand-new, just-out-of-the-box bike to one that was built in 1895. And maybe you'll be as surprised as me at the similarities and the ...

I’m in my late 20s, living in MN, and I’m not your stereotypical “active” person. I hate running, I’m not a morning person, I’m not a huge “health” person (mostly because so many “health” trends and pushes are ablest and fatphobic), and I have a chunky build. I started bike commuting a couple yrs ago when I got into a car accident and my car was in the shop for 6 weeks. I thought, screw it. The city removed my most convenient bus stop, I couldn’t afford uber, relying on people for rides sucked, I guess I’ll just start biking. I used to love riding my bike as a kid and early teen! I won’t lie, it took me a bit to enjoy it mostly because it was kind of exhausting. And getting everywhere takes longer! But the more I did it and adjusted my planning, and especially once I got an ebike, a couple yrs later and now I LOVE biking. I look forward to it all the time. I feel amazing whenever I bike and get to be outside. It has made me so much more connected to my city, and I have made SO many friends thru bike communities. It has made me so much more appreciative of being outside, of not being scared of weather. And wow I LOVE when I don’t have to drive. Like yeah sometimes I have frustrating moments while biking, but the frustration and road rage and consistent bad mood I experience whenever I have to drive every day outweighs any of that easily. It’s pretty crazy. But regardless, biking kinda changed my life. I know it doesn’t work for everyone, but I hope to encourage as many people I know as possible to try it. Theres so many different ways to bike! Theres something out there for pretty much everyone.

Blame racing and city design in the US for the current bike situation. It's lame, it makes bikes expensive when they don't need to be, and it keeps a lot of people off decent quality practical bikes.

as a Bike Mechanic I'll say I hate when one of these rolls into the shop. Royal Pain to work on these. a simple Flat Tire now involves taking apart that stupid chain case and unhooking that IGH. -no more toolless tire swaps you can get Non-Racing, actual Utility Intended bikes, that aren't Dutch Bikes. You can have an upright comfort posture and cargo racks without having to give up Good Rim Brakes, Gear Range, and Fenders; look into a Touring bike, not a Dutch bike.

Most weird cycle infrastructure is because bikes are an afterthought where, if there is room, they will wedge bicycle stuff into odd spaces rather than inconvenience cagers. Cars come first. People are not as important.

Dear Tom, Enjoy your channel and have learning some helpful stuff from you. Thank you and keep up the good work. Regarding left tuns: Been biking in roads for a long time, starting 1980 in Manhattan . Have never biked in a city that did anything significant to make it simpler for bikers though New York City is trying now. Have not been back to NYC to try the new infrastructure. . . When making left turns, I’ve found it often necessary to stay all the way to the right, cross the perpendicular road (onto which I want to make a left turn), stop and then pivot my bike 90 degrees to the left (putting me all the way right on the new road) and wait for the light to change or road to clear that I had just been on. Something perhaps to try and/or comment on. Thanks. All the best

Very good video, I´m on favour of using rear mirrors in the city, specially in cities that don´t have a culture for respecting riders on a bycicle; for me the rear mirrors are very useful and I prefer them instead of looking back cause you loose a time looking behind and not taking care what is happening in the front.

As a North American cyclist with nearly 50 years of experience with cycle touring and commuting (and as someone who has owned and used various commuting-oriented bicycles, with swept-back bars, internal gears, fenders, etc.), the only thing that seems weird to me about Dutch bikes is the extreme upright riding position. This does not seen desirable to me for a few reasons.

I had a mirror that was affixed to my helmet. It was GREAT. Just a flick of my eye and I could check for traffic coming up behind me. The images in the field of vision were HUGE! I always wore my helmet when I rode, so it was always with me when rode. It got to be such a habit that i'd flick my eye to check behind me...when I was walking in the parking aisleways at work.

In Japan there's a system of bike registration. It used to be voluntary, it's now mandatory, with reg records held for five years. It's not perfect, and recovery of low-end bikes near their end of life can be a burden to the owner (b/c someone has to pay for disposal). But if your bike is stolen and ends up in the auction system, you'll get a postcard before it's sold off or sent to the smelter.

The biggest problem with bike lanes is that they aren't continuous. Look at any city or town on Google Maps with the biking filter, and what you see is a bunch of short green lines randomly distributed. It would be interesting to see what would happen if a city had standardized, continuous, separated bike lanes throughout. I'm betting that the number of people cycling would explode. I talk to lots of people who want to ride their bikes for transportation but are afraid to ride on the road with traffic. With cars, insurance, and gas prices skyrocketing, how many would ditch their cars for a bike?

We call them "Hollandrad" in Germany and they are only comfortable when it is totally flat. In hilly southern Germany you will hardly find one. We use electric bikes now and that has changed the traffic in the city tremendous. The strange thing is that they cost between 3000 to 5000 Euro, and when you see 100 of them parked outside an event you can calculate the fortune that is standing there.

The most dangerous aspect of intersection crossing is…ta-dah, right on red speeders. They are all looking LEFT for cross traffic or diagonally left for oncoming left hand turners. What they are not looking for is tiny little YOU standing impatiently at the corner watching for the WALK signal). CRUNCH!!!!! A dangerous practice I reluctantly admit to, is having the temerity to invade sacred CAR SPACE to cross into the “blend in zone” on busy intercity thoroughfares. The technique is to ride against the near side traffic until it is clear then, bounce to the blend zone and creep against far side traffic waiting for an opening to cross. Sometimes, there are no traffic signals for blocks and you find the “bike lane” bouncing from side to side or disappearing altogether. Face it, cars are big and scary but sometimes you just gotta ‘face them’.

I've been biking to work for the past year and it's changed a lot of outlook on life, or at least opened up avenues to help me realize there are words and communities for things I always thought but was used to the suburbs. Urbanism, walkability, transit, local communities, public spaces/third places, etc. are all much bigger deals to me, and I have the knowledge and vocabulary to talk about them. I always enjoyed walking and biking around as a kid/teenager, I took transit to university, and have never really liked driving, and despite being more socially introverted I like to go outside and have limited, controlled interactions with people. I didn't know all those concepts were interconnected until just looking up ways to ride my bike safely to work. I still would never say I'm a cyclist or that it's my hobby, but it's definitely a huge factor that enables and links what aspects of life are important to me.
