Bolt EUV News Followup: The Chinese EV Tariff
Did a news Roundup a few weeks back. Now that the dust has settled on the 100% EV Tariff imposed by the Biden Administration, we now have all the facts. But do we have a solution?
The answer is no...we do not have a solution. Examine the history of tariffs in the USA. Have they ever been fully successful? The answer to that is absolutely NO! No single tariff has ever succeeded in reaching the goal that was outset. So...
There is a better way...but will anyone listen?
NOTE: I will not answer comments on this video.

    You numbers for charging fuel costs are spot on with mine. It's nice to see accurate information out on the interwebs. I really hate fast charging our bolt euv on road trips paying 4x the price of home electricity and basically being in parity with ice cars. I also hate no one seems to point this out to folks when they are giving the pro's and cons of going electric.

    Great video... Loved it.... really good useful information.. I have a 2020 Bolt EV 46K on it. I have put 34K on it in the last 7 months., For long road trips to places I have never been, I use ABRP to look at the overall route... But then check those locations with plugshare. On long road trips.. your a bit at the mercy of EA... really the only choice across long trips where I live. I do find the GOM is pretty accurate... Agree the mapping is not as crisp as Google maps. It does seem to get the state of battery correct. People ask about my EV all the time.. how i like it... I tell them straight up.. If you can charge at home.. they are great. If you can't Buy a Toyota Hybrid. Also... If you road trip a lot.. Buy a Toyota Hybrid. The costs for EV vs ICE you mentioned seem reasonable.. But would be lower on a Hybrid.. My previous car was a 14 year old Prius with 425,000 miles... My TOTAL cost per mile was 7-10 cent per mile.. Fuel, All maint performed by me, and tires. My cost in my EV is now 3-4 cent per mile. You saved $20 over the price your wifes car would cost.. A Hybrid would be a little less than you paid for charging in your EV.. and what about the TIME spent at those chargers. Just need to do all the calculations, and are sure of the use case for the vehicle.

    Chinese EVs are going to make it to America. The EV that is so low priced is what many people want. They don't need over the air updates and features they will not use. Now that high temperature LFP is placed in the car liquid cooling isn't needed in many areas of the USA. Air cooled batteries are in the cheaper versions. When we converted gas cars to EVs we needed batteries (later a BMS), motor, controller and charger. The car was simple to fix. The basic EV will sell well in the US and that is why this Chineese EV is getting so much interest. The tariff will get bypassed and the car will make it here. Tariffs never worked in the past and will fail now.

    Hello Jim. I'd like to share with you my perspective on Chinese EV manufacturing. First of all, I'd like to clarify that I in no way support the CCP, their practices and goals and in no way affiliated with them or any manufacturer. The only reason I own Chinese EVs is more competitive pricing compared to similar western EVs. China owns the majority of supply chain in battery manufacturing. They also have significant advances in battery manufacturing, to a point I think batteries from CATL/BYD much more reliable and have higher endurance compared to batteries from LG Chem, Samsung SDI, SK innovation or Panasonic. Second reason is they prefer LFP chemistry which is more stable, has higher temperature tolerance, safer and has higher cycle life. In my opinion Tesla is the king in those fields, yet even they use BYD battery packs in some of their models. The Chinese EVs are second to Tesla, and the rest of legacy auto follow. Some more closely, some are hopelessly behind. Edit: further thoughts. What US needs to do is heavily invest in battery manufacturing and accompanying supply chain infrastructure. The patents of current day batteries expired so anyone can produce them. Then let these battery manufacturers offer a modular EV platform to US manufacturers at more competitive prices and availability. This must be done as a strategic step that cannot be influenced by lobbyists because that is exactly what China has done some 10 years ago and kept at it. I believe USA absolutely has the means to dominate the EV market. And I think oil/gas revenue must fund this transition, not taxpayers.

    I'm pro EV, but in all fairness ALL EV owners are being "bribed" by the $7500 Tax Rebate & the benefits such as outlined in comments below (special deals on electricity), using the HOV Lane, dedicated parking spots, or other "benefits" of driving an EV that will not be around forever - so, a fair and unbiased report would recognize that and the reality that the sweet deals are just a gimmick to encourage (read bribing - your words) people to adopt and those won't last forever. Just saying, imagine if we had gas pumps in all parking lots or received bonus' for buying a Merceds Benz. I'll wait, there's no hurry, and we'll see what happens after the enticements end - in the mean time, I'll keep driving my 38 mpg gas "guzzler".

The combination produce a list of charging stops for me and I may end up using the built in vehicle navigation system or Waze for actual routing. The built in vehicle navigation is used in winter when I need the vehicle to pre-condition the battery when coming into a planned charging stop.

    • @MyBoltEUV
      @MyBoltEUV Před 21 dnem

      If you bother to watch the entire video, your assumption that I ignore other variables is incorrect. I focus on the big ticket item because it seems that is the ONLY think the EV ignorant can focus on because that is all they hear in the news. The fact of the matter is...the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) over a 10 year period will be thousands less than that for a comparable ICE vehicle. This includes the fact that the EV will cost more at purchase (currently that is the case) and the battery replacement. All things being the same, most ICE vehicle owners do not consider anything other than gas and tires. But there are other costs they often ignore--oil changes, tune-ups, and over 10 years, an engine replacement. I suggest everyone who thinks ICE cars are cheaper take the time to sit down and do a fair analysis. They will be deeply surprised. Additionally, there are many thousands of EVs on the road that have been there for more than 10 years with their original batteries. But the only thing you hear about in the fake news or on the anti-EV CZcams channels are about the isolated incidents of people having to have multiple battery replacements.

    Well said. Your videos and channel are appreciated. Recently, while shopping around for a bolt euv, I noticed dealerships are pricing vehicles, including the tax deduction. That deduction, as far as I'm concerned, is between myself and the irs. Another issue that I find ridiculous is if you earn a combined income of over $150,000, which we do, you can't get the rebate. A rebate is a rebate. It's ironic that the people who can't afford these cars in some way would be the ones that can get the rebate. I have to do more research. Maybe if we file married separately, we can get the rebate. Thanks again for your polite demeanor and knowledge.

However, many people might also appreciate this degree of honesty. For instance, knowing exactly how a person feels can bring a certain level of security to a relationship. In that sense, many may view an autistic person’s potentially extreme honesty as refreshing and authentic. A small 2014 studyTrusted Source found that high functioning autistic children tend to be more rule-oriented when it comes to morality. This can often provide autistic people with a deep sense of moral justice and fairness. This desire to protect others may translate into the autistic person or their loved one(s) getting involved in charities or other causes that help others. I am interested in the terms of the layoff. If the people let go had all their options vested, they may be set for life.

    Elon made a "valid point"? He left vendors without contacts. He dissolved any trust in his future actions even from some staunch supporters. I could go on. Come on man. You show exactly the same biases in some of your reporting that you believe the media does. Never mind your unwillingness to admit conservatives and republicans are clearly more engaged in the spread of anti ev and F.U.D. talk than the other side. There is bias everywhere and you prove that.

      Glad you know who I am. But politicians (all of them including republicans and democrats) are like diapers. They both need changing often AND for the same reason! I’ll challenge your challenge. Who’s more biased? Me or you? Carry on!

    Tariffs to protect USA workers & corporate, not punish

    • @MyBoltEUV
      @MyBoltEUV Před 21 dnem

      Protect USA workers from what? These tariffs are aimed at something we currently do not make a lot of in this country because of backwards thinking and conspiracy theories...EVs and Batteries. If we were actually producing more EVs and making more Batteries, I could understand the tariffs. But we are not...so it is protection for the Fossil Fuel Cartels, plain and simple!

    1st question: What are the rules and requirements if a buyer purchases a used 2017 to 2019 Bolt that has anywhere from 60K to 120K of original odometer miles on the original battery, and wishes to get the ''free'' battery replaced with the newer 62KW or is it 65KW engine/battery's that are in the 2022 models ? 2nd question: While I'm interested in knowing the answer to this question for May 17, 2024 as I post this question, I would be interested in knowing if the answer is going to apply in the year 2025, (I'm uncertain about my first time entry into an EV decison in 2024, or waiting until 2025 based on middle east conflict outlook)

      1st Answer: No reputable dealer should be selling a Bolt with an original battery - that would mean that it still has an open recall on it! I would contact GM before purchasing a Bolt with an open battery recall to see if they would still perform the free battery replacement. 2nd Answer: I don't have an answer to this question...sorry!

    How much is the insurance?

    • @MyBoltEUV
      @MyBoltEUV Před 21 dnem

      For me, it is less than it was on my previous ICE car. That is all I can tell you. Your rates will be based on your age, your driving habits (wrecks, tickets) and you insurance company.
