Bridgnorth to Highley on the footplate of 43106 at the Severn Valley Railway
Filmed on Thursday 14th September 2023, the official re-opening day for Eardington Station. On the first day of the Autumn Steam Gala at the Severn Valley Railway we join the crew of 43106 on the local stopping service between Bridgnorth and Highley. Calling at Eardington and Hampton Loade. More information on Eardington station can be found here:
www.svrwiki.com/Eardington
43106 is an London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) designed, British Railways built; Ivatt Class 4. Designed by H.G. Ivatt, the locomotive is a 2-6-0 'Mogul' designed for Mixed Traffic work. 43106 is the only survivor of a class of 162. In their working lives they were often used on secondary routes and branch lines just like the Severn Valley for local services.
More information on 43106 (and the wider SVR) can be found here: www.svrwiki.com/LMS_Ivatt_Class_4_43106

    This style of reverser looks to me more accurate than the Johnson bar type.

    • @Ben.Wright
      @Ben.Wright Před měsícem

      Yes, it has a lot more finesse than a lever reverser (the term in the UK used for a bar reverser). In the UK we refer to this type as a “screw reverser”, they were common on locos expected to do longer distance / continuous running; so you can use the accuracy of having more notches to work the engine more efficiently. However a screw reverser requires much more effort and time from the crew to go from full forward to full reverse (lots of turning the handle), than a lever reverser would. So screw reversers were generally not found on types of locos expected to do a lot of shunting. (There are exceptions to the above, but that became the general principle).

      Paul has been a supporter and volunteer at the SVR since his teenage years in the 1960s; however he was not a founding member at the Cooper’s Arm’s meeting. He has however been a director and chairman of SVR(H), and is a trustee of the SVR Charitable Trust. The crew are not being assessed by Paul.

      No problem Stuart. He isn’t assessing them; during an assessment an inspector would generally not get involved in any aspect of the loco operation. Fantastic!! Just add some information about this place and this bridge. From Wiki: The cast-iron arch bridge has four arch ribs each of nine parts bolted together. The arch elements were cast by the Coalbrookdale Company and the bridge was built by Thomas Brassey, Samuel Morton Peto and Edward Betts. Opened for traffic on 31 January 1862, the railway line was closed to traffic in 1963. The bridge survived the threat of demolition and was then used by the Severn Valley Railway. In May 1974, heritage passenger services were re-introduced between Alveley Colliery and Bewdley over the Victoria Bridge. It was restored in 2004.

    What is the fireman doing when he adjusts some levers and then down the outside of cab. What is he looking for?

    • @Ben.Wright
      @Ben.Wright Před 3 lety

      Those levers are for the injectors, there is one on each side of the engine, below footplate level, close to the cab steps. The levers on the tender are for the water valves, and those in the cab for the steam valves. Inside the injectors a jet of steam is used to accelerate and then pressurise the water. This allows the pressurised water to enter the boiler via the clack valves, without the use of a pump. This allows the fireman to keep the water level in the boiler topped up. If there is too much water or not enough steam entering the injector, waste water will spill out of the overflow pipe (just under the cab steps). Similarly if there is too much steam or not enough water entering the injector, steam will exit the overflow pipe. You can sometimes see water or steam exiting the overflow pipe in other photos and videos of all locomotives. Wasting steam or water is not very efficient, so when the fireman is looking over the side he is checking to see if he has got the balance of water and steam correct so as not to waste any water or steam. If he sees anything coming out the overflow pipe he adjusts the settings of the valves to get the balance right so as not to waste anything.

    • @Ben.Wright
      @Ben.Wright Před 3 lety

      I believe the rattling is the sound of the tender storm sheet stanchions slightly rattling, with the sound being transmitted through the mounts to the cameras. I've not had this issue on other locos, so it was quite unexpected when viewing the footage. It was a very high pitched rattle before my best shot at editing the sound, without loosing all the sounds we would like to hear. The team from Didcot explained that the stanchions are a 'drop in' arrangement rather than bolted on due to previous mishaps as other tenders with stanchions have been coaled by forklift / JCB and the stanchions damaged; hence the removable arrangement on this tender.

    ben the toolboxes are not bolted down part of the original design apparently, the crews were allocated a loco and if they swopped to another one the toolboxes were swopped to

      Blimey! I wouldn't want to be the person tasked with swapping tool boxes between locos, not exactly the lightest of objects!

    I've enjoyed day trips on the railway from the 1982 83 era, and last time was when the newly opened Kidderminster station section before that we got on at Bewdley, fond memories this brings back ,must come along again when travelling is allowed still haven't done the new extension to East Grinstead on the blue Bell line either.

      Well there’s been a fair few other new bits added to the railway since the Kidderminster section reopened - well worth a visit when you’re able to travel again!

      The PW teams do an excellent job, in all weathers; and we very much appreciate them!

    Looks like you put both cameras on the top of the pannier and the buffers of the pannier Ben

    • @Ben.Wright
      @Ben.Wright Před 3 lety

      Yes Cameras were fixed to the centre lamp iron, cab side handrail and on the tank lifting rings - its surprisingly hard to find places to fix cameras where they defiantly can’t fall off!
