Jim Hall Jazz Guitar Master Class Part 3

“I transcribed some of your solos” “Okay, you owe me a dinner” 😊
He was a classically trained guitarist too but he stopped that as his nails would chip away because of the electric guitar
29:40 wtf
When I can’t see, I hear. I’m a happy music lover camper. Thank you.
WES MONTGOMERY n'a jamais perdu son temps dans ces ridicules duos du dominant et du dominé ( maitre / élève ) que les guitaristes semblent affectionner quand bien même au détriment de la musique le plus souvent .
Contrast this lesson with one I also saw of Pat Metheny giving a lesson. Jim is here much more respectful of the student, treating him about as an equal. Jim was way more humble than Pat. Don't get me wrong: Pat's a great guitar player and musician in many ways. I respect that he's a game-changer. Let me stick to the lessons: So I told of Jim Hall's approach. On the other video Pat's ego got in the way.I didn't love his self-satisfied smirk, like a guru. He also borderline insulted the poor guy. And what he says about rhythm and swing and blending with the group sounds good, but he doesn't do it often enough for me.I've watched too many performances where it's all Pat all the time and if we define 'swing' as something originating from innovators coming out of the black community and culture and is felt and responded to PHYSICALLY by the listener PM rarely gets there---for all his smirking talk on the lesson. NEVER has that happened with JH, the ultimate group/team player. Jim teaches by example, period. He has no 'rap'---just music. And he played for years with swing masters such as Ben Webster and countless others. Jimmy Raney called JH's teaching approach 'coaching'. To go out w/something positive about Pat Metheny: when he plays a solo rendition of a song, as in his recording What it's All About (arrogant title IMO) he finally submerges his ego and the million notes he can turn me off with---and sublimely brings out THE SONG. If he did that all the time I'd be the biggest Pat Metheny fan. I'll stop there and only add RIP Mr. Jim Hall...Joel Fass
Yeah, what the hell was he doing?
Geez, when Lenny says he‘s not very good at it says a lot about Wes
Did a five year old film this?
12:45 Octave soloing like Wes Montgomery, one of the most difficult things to master, according to Lenny.
Lousy cameraman and soundman
When genius collides.
Lenny played and thought so fucking deep… absolute visionary of the jazz guitar, created his own sound.. his re-harmonizing take on “My Funny Valentine “ alone is worth this entire , sometimes very frustrating marathon of a disjointed, but still precious video.. Tal was an absolute legend , but I think Lenny’s otherworldly skill and depth overwhelm him at times, but he’s still amazing and more than game- the look of absolute joy on his face ( and Lenny’s) during the most sympatico moments is priceless, and quite touching. Tal also KILLS the walking bass lines while he’s comping for Lenny’s off the hook soloing…Two giant talents, probing each other’s vast musical skills, just for the ‘halibut’..😉 thank you for posting this - it’s like the lost Dead Sea Scrolls of jazz guitar.. just pure gold.👍🙏🎸🎸🎶🌈
Farlow had lost some precision and agility here as he retired from music in the late 50s and had just returned
Thankfully, the sound guy kept recording.
Amazing! Incredible guitarists. Just learned about Lenny and Tal from Rick Beato interview.
Me too....when Rick had Andy Sumner on talking about his lesson from Lenny.
My friend’s drunken sister filmed this.
She's hot! 🐸😆
And I was groping her as she was filming. Im so sorry.
More talent in each of them than you'd think humanly possible! I got to see Tal play - great memory!
Two Masters!!!!
Ted Greene too..
Jaw on ground watching this!!!
The great Jim Hall. Put out some grea albums and always had top players on them. "Joao" is a gem. Thanks, Jim.
The cameraman is a idiot
Who's the idiot holding the camera ?
Pity the film misses the best parts, systematically!
Lenny was scary good..
Andy Summers said Lenny was the best guitarist ever..and paid Lenny $45.00 for a guitar lesson while Police were in Nashville..Lennny drove to their hotel
Damn Tal can walk bass like a mufka
Do NOT watch this on acid!!! 😵💫
Put on the closed captions for this one.
Camera work irritating. But very interesting meeting of 2 greats. 😐
Jim has 2 D'Aquistos...the blonde one is an Avantgarde. Worth at least 200k. The sunburst is the Jim Hall jazz. Its the one he plays in the D'Aquisto video, The New Yorker Special
He s the inventor of the sweep picking.extrem rapidity on his 60 s lps ,certainly a great down to earth person What are the chords Jim plays at 40mn20 ? There's more than the 2,5,1..
This is like some bizarre 60s scifi film where two aliens are meeting with a production crew randomly sitting there
Anyone who played Tals guitar- then realizes how large his hands were. Like palm 2 basketballs large. Anyone know what guitar Lenny is using that he modified?
All right so that's the second time that there's a blackout when you want to see the video so bad because they're giving a lesson for the ages
listen
Which guitar did Lenny use ? Custom made ?
He explains all that around the 6 minute mark. He had it custom-made because he was used to his classical guitar’s wider neck.
Thanks @@m.vonhollen6673

A real snoozer of a lesson here but, um, er, JIM HALL… eat it up.
I love how it’s presented in an unedited format. And so very glad this exists.
me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There be moments.
Just thank God someone did live between two greats.I love this...and the errors makes this so real life
No... I'll thank the musicians and the Camera people. Not some stupid god that isn't real. God.. did god create the person that killed him in his pool?
This interview is AWESOME. Thank you. Jesus bless you for sharing giving us this
Jesus has nothing more to do with this. Thank you. What is wrong with you people?
thus asks “morbidmanmusic”..
Thanks for great real life video. The same neck on both guitars ...genius.
🙏🏾🙏🏾
Thank you for sharing hope you are well God loves you deeply shalom 🤗🐼♥️✝️💐 Philippians 4:8
I have this DVD since years….whenever I feel I need to be humbled, I watch Lenny and Tal…….
🙏
These stupid fucking guys filming this. They ruined it.
This is raw, unedited footage...this is what it looks like...then you edit and put the pieces together in the final product...these guys know what they’re doing. I’ve seen Emily’s documentary on her dad and some of this footage is in it...and it’s wonderful because it’s EDITED! Lol You guys need to back off...this is normal footage before it’s put together...just enjoy the playing...and get The Genius of Lenny Breau and whatever the documentary is about Tal and you’ll get to see the final product.
The film crew must have partied with Lenny before the shoot.
🚬🤠
Thank you for this treasure!
legendary bro 😎
