On Railroad Tracks and Roman Chariots
zhlédnutí 85Před 2 hodinami
A popular urban legend makes the conveniently simple and elegant claim that the standard gauge of train tracks used in most of the world descends directly from an official Roman military specification for war chariots. Seems like a good place to point the skeptical eye. We're going to have to go through the history of Roman roads, wagon development in Europe, the emergence of the railed tramway...
Corrections with Hat in Hands

We talk about a lot of urban legends and conspiracy theories and stuff on Skeptoid, and to understand them best, we need to understand them accurately and in their proper context. On Washboarded Roads

Hunting the Elusive Rogue Wave

Rogue waves are the secret assassins of the open ocean. They can appear out of storms or out of normal seas. They always come and go without warning. Also, strictly, nobody "knows" things that are wrong, as "knowing" means a justified *true* belief. It would be more correct to say that people believe things that are wrong. Or maybe you meant it ironically and I missed the intention.

really disappointing that you didn't acknowledge Federal Rules of Evidence 702 and Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharms., Inc., 509 U.S. 579 (1993) which deals with these issues in practice. Issues from Daubert on the admissibility of scientific evidence (which is always presented by expert testimony): Whether the theory or technique employed by the expert is generally accepted in the scientific community; Whether it has been subjected to peer review and publication; Whether it can be and has been tested; Whether it has a known error rate; and Whether the research was conducted independent of the particular litigation or dependent on an intention to provide the proposed testimony. the purposes of the scientific method and admissibility of forensic evidence are not the same and neither is perfect.

True, allowing these individuals to roam free is usually not a better life for them. Keeping a captive companion may also be harmful to the captor mentally and morally.

The Earth is expanding due to the release of its previous huge atmosphere. It is more less, "decompression" from earlier stages, when Earth was a gas giant. There are four "gas giants" that are in our solar system that are forming new Earths in their interiors right now. The Earth formed under thousands + Gpa (gigapascal), metal and rocks are very compressible under those stresses. Think of gas giants (formerly stars) as giant planet ovens. I hope this helps.

The question we should be asking about billionaires is how many billionaires does it take to usurp our democracy. We’ve already seen through history how someone with a lot of money which equals a lot of power i.e. Kellogg has influenced our country. That is the question that we should be looking at and what we can do to prevent those with outsized resources from impacting the rest of us.

Fatima falls under the category of "private revelation", which means that Catholics are not required to believe in it, even though many do. In declaring that Fatima is worthy of belief all the Church is saying here is that there is nothing in the Fatima revelations that goes against the rest of Church teaching so if you want to believe in them, you may. Not every "private revelation" gets Church approval; in fact, there were two in the latter half of the 20th century that were actively condemned by the Church. These were Bayside, New York and Necedah, Wisconsin. In a rare move, the Vatican placed both under interdict, meaning that not only were they were off-limits to Catholics but any Catholic who knowingly traveled to these sites to take part in the activities there was automatically excommunicated. There are other private revelations such as Garabandal and Medjugorje that the Church has not yet made a ruling on one way or another as far as I know. So to recap, all that "worthy of belief" means is that there is nothing contained in this particular revelation that contradicts Catholic teaching; it does not mean you have to believe it to remain a Catholic in good standing. As far as the ones where the jury is still out, again belief is still optional; it is only when the Church has made a ruling that the contents of a particular private revelation is not in compliance with its teachings that it steps in and says, you are not to believe this or to promote it in any way, and again, this is very, very rare. If I recall correctly the problem with both Bayside and Necedah is that the visionaries insisted on promoting their message even after they were ordered to cease and desist by local diocesan authorities. The fact that they willfully defied these authorities is what led the Vatican to step in and take the action it did. Again, extremely rare. What a lot of people might not understand is that there are two types of revelation in the Catholic Church. One is what is called the Deposit of Faith, which includes Scripture, Tradition and the Creeds. Nothing new can be added to this so that even when the Pope makes an ex-cathedra statement of faith and morals it has to build upon and show a connection to what has gone before. These are the core teachings of the Faith which are binding on all Catholics. When it comes to private revelations, however, these are not binding; furthermore it is the CHURCH that determines whether a particular revelation is in line with the rest of what it teaches, not the visionaries. Which is why Sister Lucia had to comply with her superiors when ordered to write down the Fatima "secrets." Had she not done so, Fatima would most likely have been ruled not worthy of belief and anything associated with it put under interdict. Now, was Sister Lucia telling the truth about these events? I'd say she knew which side her bread was buttered on and where not to cross the line regarding Church authority.

an experienced or professional poker player can usually read tells, specifically, whether an opponent is lying (bluffing). here's a freebie: talk to an opponent during a hand about anything, maybe about the weather. a player with a strong or made hand (flush or straight) will usually answer in a calm voice because he or she has little to worry about. a player with an potentially winning or guaranteed winner hand that is not presently an odds favorite (the presently unmade hand will lose 4 out of 5 times) will often display a slightly noticeable anxiety. it's not 100% accurate for reasons that should appear obvious, but its relied on by people whose money is at stake where losing is not a theoretical issue solvable by polling kollege kids.

Did you hear the news Brian? We had disclosure yesterday! Yes, we had a real life former Army Colonel, with credentials out the wazoo say that we have data that the U.S. has had contact with NHI. Former Rear Admiral Tim Gallaudet echoed Karls sentiments and said this, “My colleague, retired Army Colonel Karl Nell, gave an exceptional interview at the recent SALT conference. His topic was UAP, formerly UFOs, and he said with 100% certainty that the world is being visited by higher level, non-human intelligence (NHI). I know he is correct with complete certainty.” "Not the first time that Rear Admiral Tim Gallaudet has given us confirmation of NHI, verbatim." So there you go, Aliens are visiting and our government knows about it but they are looking for ways of disclosure but now we've had catastrophic and sudden disclosure, so it's all over with, we can go home now. 😂😂😂😂😂😂

True, many stories are embellished or fully fictional, and some would seem very true, the former not negating the latter. There is a 'biblical' phrase "to rightly divide the word". This is as one must try to do in considering or examining such stories, as is also said to "test the spirits". Otherwise one might believe anything, true or not.
