Trying to change my Swiss driver’s license to a Spanish one was another ordeal. First, it was a huge struggle to figure out how and where to do it. Everything was in Spanish only (surprise, surprise), and the official Spanish websites were full of glitches. Even when I managed to navigate through this labyrinth, there were never any available appointments. You need a lot of luck to get an appointment for these things in Spain. Spanish bureaucracy is a notorious nightmare.
Fortunately, through a friend, I was able to secure an appointment-two months later and far away-but that's how it is in this country. At the DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico), nobody spoke a word of English (of course), which is pretty standard in Spain. I managed with my basic Spanish (if you come to Spain, you better know Spanish). They took away my Swiss driver’s license and told me I would receive my new Spanish one in a while. The appointment was an unfriendly and difficult experience, as it was most of the time for me with bureaucratic processes in Spain.
Next, I needed to find car insurance. After sending countless emails and making numerous calls, it seemed impossible. The quotes I received were horrendous, starting from a few thousand euros up to 4500 euros per year. I had never heard of such high insurance prices, nor had my camper friends. No insurance company gave them such horrendous quotes. When I asked one company why they were charging me double the amount listed on their website, they didn't even give me a reason. I assumed, once again, it was my Swiss nationality where people smelled money, money, money. It was a nightmare.
Finally, I found an insurance company, only to discover that they tried to trick and betray me. When I confronted them and threatened legal action, they paid back the money I had already paid.
